From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 4–6—This tongue-in-cheek overview features a folksy narrative of how and why country music developed in the barns and back roads of rural America. The text doesn't miss a beat—it covers instruments, early recordings, yodeling (with a humorous spread on how-to), the Great Depression, gospel, movie cowboys, a "paper-doll" spoof of singers' costumes, hillbilly jazz, World War II, acceptable country pets (hound dogs, varmints, hawgs), country "vee-hickles," Nashville, the age of TV, the 1990s explosion of country sound, and much more. While poking fun at itself with a "country words" dictionary and a segment on "country hair," the book offers a vast amount of historical fact amid a multitude of caricatures of country stars. Some of the pages are quite dark, but the ever-changing backgrounds and fonts with colored-pencil and crayon illustrations carry an amazing variation of detail. The book gets a bit over-the-top with "The Big List of Country Nicknames," stars depicted as winged cupids on the cover, and Hank Williams's problems with pistols, but country-music fans probably will only mind that there are faces not present. A long who's who at the back identifies the performers pictured throughout. Holly George-Warren's Honky-Tonk Heroes & Hillbilly Angels (Houghton, 2006) offers a simple biographical look at a few artists, while Bertholf's broad view goes further to explain the genre to young readers and does so in an entertaining manner.—Mary Elam, Forman Elementary School, Plano, TX

From Booklist
Using a folksy, down-home tone, Bertholf, a country-western singer himself, takes readers on a whirlwind tour through music history. He begins in a "brand-new country . . . where if you wanted to hear some music, you had to make it yourself." After briefly explaining what the U.S. was like in those days, Bertholf also shows the rudimentary instruments folks used (spoons!) and how songs came from things they actually did, like working on the railroad. Radio and early records created stars, and caricatures of the musicians dot the oversize format. The artwork also sets the stage in many clever ways: country singers as paper dolls, a congregation of gospel and church singers in a choir (separated by race). History marches on, and the music changes and refines itself as it rolls from the country to the city, especially Nashville. Much works here, but there are also several flaws: singers are identified in a difficult-to-read key, and the muddy grays and dirty browns used as background colors are a turnoff. For the most part, though, this bubbles with wit and solid information. Ilene Cooper

Never tease a squeezel
By E. R. Bird
Now I am not what you would call a big fan of country music. I know my basics, and I'm vaguely aware of its history, but truth be told country is not all the prevalent on my iPod. So the question I have to ask myself here is, do I feel sufficiently qualified to read and review a children's non-fiction picture book with the title, "The Long Gone Lonesome History of Country Music"? I mean, if I don't know my Charlie Rich from my Johnny Bond, how am I going to be able to sufficiently judge how well author/illustrator Bret Bertholf has convered this particular genre's highs and lows? In this particular case, I have my ever-loving, country listenin' husband to turn to. Side by side we read through Bertholf's book and came to a single conclusion. For all its flaws, and there are one or two, this is a jaw-dropping piece of history. The pictures are stunning (if occasionally difficult to make out), the facts always interesting, the history correct, and the storyline faithful. Add in the fact that Bertholf has managed to literally give face to almost every single person who ever even THOUGHT about singing about their mean-eyed cat and you've a book that looks, acts, and is like no other.

Did you know that you might be a country singer and not even know it? It's true. And Bret Bertholf is going to show you why. Concentrating the whole of his attention on the American South, the book dips deep into the past to talk about how people would kill time in the olden days. There wasn't a lot to do, aside from creating your own music. Then, slowly, technology began to change everything. There was the radio and the record players. Those, in turn, led to the first country music star, Jimmie Rodgers. Time goes by and different musical forms like gospel, jazz, and honky tonks changed how the music sounded. WWII came, the singing cowboy was born, and Nashville grew and grew. With humorous asides, ridiculously in-depth pictures, and more than its fair share of humor, the book shows exactly how country music came to be, and where its future may lay someday.

This is Bret Bertholf's first solo picture book and I would like to point out that the man has credentials out the wazoo. From the bookflap I've learned that not only can Mr. Bertholf yodel (no mean feat) but he's also a part of the group named Halden Woford and Hi-Beams. You may have heard them on A Prairie Home Companion in the past. The book reflects what is obviously his long-standing love for the heroes of the country world. Obviously at some point Mr. Bertholf thought to himself that it would be a shame to mention only some country music stars and not others. The solution? Endpapers. Starting with 1920, every year since that time is given one train car and one singer/musician sitting on top. Each person is presented like a well-rendered bobblehead doll, their features recognizable and (mostly) cheery. My husband assures me that in many cases, the year that a particular star rides does not always correspond to when they really hit it big. There's also an inclusion of Bing Crosby that's sure to have a purist or two scratching their heads. The train ends, curiously enough, with 1999. I suppose the author didn't want to judge too soon the more contemporary stars of today. Could it have killed him to include a Dixie Chick, though? That's a personal beef. Not a professional one.

Every face in this book is different. Every single one. That may not sound like much, but once you begin to notice it, it takes on a certain appeal. My favorite image of the book was a remarkable shot of people standing in line for soup during the Depression. Bertholf, in his agreeable fashion, explains the basics of what happened by offering up a hypothetical situation where a person has handed all their money to Stocky Margaret. But take a gander at the faces in the line. There are at least seventeen of them and each one is different, historically accurate, and deeply realistic. Now turn to the Nashville section. On stage you can see Jake Tullock breaking it down with Roy Acuff and Ernest Tubb. That's not the impressive part. The musicians have their back to us and we can see in the dim light the faces of the audience members. Now Bertholf could have made the audience dark or drawn a generic face or two. Instead he has given each person there a personality, a hairstyle in keeping with the times, and, even in some cases, an action. It's mesmerizing. I have a very hard time looking away from it just to continue writing this review. Wow.

Now the art is wonderful in some ways. You have paper dolls one one page and a kind of fill-in-the-blank songwriting sheet on another. I love Bertholf's art. I just wish I could show it to large groups of people. Time and time again the artist will proffer fabulous scenes or images or people, yet do so with an incredibly dark earth-toned palette. The illustrations in this book were done with colored pencil, "and Caran d'Ache crayon on Canson pastel paper." This means they are always amazing. Unfortunately, it also means that they are very very dark. A couple spreads, like a sudden discussion of "Countrypolitan" and Patsy Cline, will lighten up the book once in a while, but more often than not the images are hard to see. If, as a children's librarian, I want to show a group of kids "The Rules of Bluegrass", I won't be able to because the page is so dark brown and grey that it's almost black. Bertholf obviously created this book with one-on-one parent/child reading in mind. Had he lightened things up a little, though, this would make for an excellent readaloud to whole classrooms. A pity.

For the most part, Bertholf is more interested in pinpointing the important moments and influences on country music than in spending a lot of time talking about some of the implications. This isn't to say he doesn't reference that history obliquely. On a two page spread entitled Gospel Roots we see two different gospel choirs. One the left-hand page are white singers like Bradley Kincaid and Abby Hutchinson. On the right-hand page is a black gospel choir, segregated from the white choir and containing members like Bessie Smith and Thomas A. Dorsey. You won't get an explanation of why the Confederate flag still flies or even of how racism has influenced the music throughout the years. That isn't to say, however, that Bertholf isn't going to allude to it once in a while.

Now when it comes to non-fiction, kid-appeal is key. If you can wrangle a child into getting interested in a subject that they may or may not have cared for right from the start, you're worth your weight in kiddie lit gold, my friend. Mr. Bertholf most certainly falls into that category. First of all, the aforementioned pictures, for all that you probably couldn't make them out from a distance of five feet, are wholly entrancing when seen up close and personal. Apparently Mr. Bertholf (and I'm getting this second-hand) lured Little, Brown & Co. into showing an interest in this book with a little two-page spread sent to them entitled, "How To Yodel!" It's in the finished product, I should add, and it's quite a magnificent spread. A large mouth, the gutter of the book falling neatly somewhere around the wisdom tooth area, opens as wide as possible as the words, "Don't Look" and "Where Yodels come from" point to the gaping maw. All kinds of tidbits like this make the book hard for a kid to put down. There's a section on Country Pets that tells you about Hound Dogs, Hawgs, and the cutest l'il ole Varmints you ever did see. There's the Big List of Country Names where you take the initials of your real name and come up with your country music alternative (I'm either Cooter Loudbottom or Goober Loudbottom). There are monsters and hot rods and puzzle pieces and all kinds of stuff falling about the place. There's even a peculiar yet adorable "squeezel" that a lot of children will have a fun time finding on one page or another.

Lest you feel from what I'm saying that Bertholf is making fun of the country music genre, allow me to put your mind at rest. Sure, he plays up some of the sillier aspects. The singing cowboys, big hair, and sequin-riddled clothing are all present. At the same time, however, you get a true sense of his respect for the genre at large. The meticulousness of his history and the number of names he's able to pull out are impressive. I was more than a little disappointed to see that Bertholf did not include a Bibliography of sources, however. I think this was a huge mistake. Libraries that want to classify this book as non-fiction will be all the more reluctant to add it to their collection when they find that the author has not backed up his facts with any reliable texts. And what about kids who want to learn more about country music? Wouldn't a list of websites, books for further reading, and general articles have fit in like a dream? Sure, there's a list at the story's end of all the famous faces that cropped up in earlier pictures, but that does little to bolter the book's credibility.

The book changes constantly from spreads that are horizontal to those that are vertical, but I don't feel that this upsets the nature of the reading any. Just keeps you on your toes. Now, I know that I haven't even mentioned half the stuff you'll find in this book. It's detailed within an inch of its life and if I had more time I'd talk to you about the peculiar look Bob Dylan sports in this title, or the fact that Dolly Parton's boobs are, to put it mildly, unrecognizable. But I can't cover everything Bertholf has done, and that's okay. It just means that when April rolls around you're going to have to remember to seek out and read THE most memorable country music picture book for the kiddies. It has its flaws, but they don't keep it from being the best of the best. Keep your eyes peeled.

Great book and illustrations!

We bought this for our daughter and for a friend's son. I think we have enjoyed it more than the kids. Definitely a great gift for any country music fan you know - and when I say country, I mean Johnny Cash country not bubble gum country. Enjoy!

Great read, with great art!
By Joshua N Sapir
I'll admit right off the bat that my knowledge of country music is limited to Johnny Cash and... well that's about it. This book was a lot of fun to read with my kids, and really gives a great breakdown of the history of country music along with an overview of the different sub-genres within country. I may have to get on Spotify and look all this music up because it has definitely piqued my interest! Plus there are some fun little sections like "Finding your Country Name," that we had a good laugh over. On top of the good story and history, the art is very well done and creative.

Amazon.com Review
Do you communicate ineffectively with some people and powerfully with others? The reason may be a difference in personalities and communication preferences. The Art of Speedreading People is a crash course in communication strategies, showing you how to observe behavioral clues to gain valuable insights into people's personalities and communication styles. The result: you become a more effective and convincing communicator, and you are more likely to receive the response you want.

This book is like a practical communications seminar based on the psychology model called Personality Typing, which is focused on identifying key personality traits in order to communicate most effectively. First, you analyze your own personality type and determine your placement on the scales of extrovert/introvert, sensor/intuitive, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving. The book then teaches you about the clues that indicate other people's personality type, including speaking style, body language, and occupation. You test yourself by reading a few scenarios and personality typing the characters described. You put the system to work by learning approaches to "speedreading" people in person and on the phone using skill-building exercises. Finally, you learn how to communicate effectively with people who are a different type or temperament than you. The Art of Speedreading People is intriguing and useful, especially for those who work in a sales, service, teaching, or managerial position, or any job where effective and positive communication is paramount.

From Booklist
The authors have taken a well-respected aspect of psychology called "personality typing" and devised the art of "speed reading" people as a powerful tool for quickly and accurately identifying key personality traits for effective communication. The book also serves as an infomercial for the authors' consulting practice. Tieger and Barron-Tieger aim to accurately identify key characteristics of personality that are present in all people, through understanding how people are energized, what kind of information they naturally notice and remember, how they make decisions, and how they organize the world around them. The first section of the book is devoted to the underlying principles of personality type, the second section addresses communicating with people in their favorite style, and the final section deals with understanding and appreciating the subtleties and preferred communication styles of the 16 types identified by the concept of personality type. Although some readers may not agree with all of the authors' views, this book provides useful insight into the ongoing challenge of effective communication. Mary Whaley

Easy Getting Started Guide to the 16 MBTI Personality Types
By D. Bodenheimer
I have read a great number of books on the 16 MBTI personality types, and I have investigated scores of websites to really find out all I can about understanding people and their personalities. This book, by far, is the easiest guide to the MBTI. I highly recommend it both to people new to MBTI, and to those who have a fairly good understanding of the 16 types.
This book is simple and easy to understand, and has some really great real-world examples that are wonderful. The "How To Speak" sections are fun and make perfect sense.
Other books on the MBTI are really complicated and seem to require a Master's degree in psychology in order to really get the most out of them.
This book will help you understand the people in your life, and make you realize that everyone is different, and that everyone sees things from a different perspective. But that isn't the best part... it tells you HOW they see things and HOW best to interact with them.

Very Insightful For Understanding How People Communicate
By Philip R. Heath
I have used MBTI at work and found it to be useful. I came across this book when I was looking for something to add to the basic knowledge that I had. Don't worry though, the first two chapters go over the basics. If you are not familiar with MBTI, this will get you started. If you are familiar with it, it serves as a good review.

Then the heart of the book takes you through three tools for identifying peoples preferences: type preference as a whole, temperament, and extraverted/introverted feeling. After putting all of these together, the authors present you with some case studies where you use the various techniques to try to identify the types of the people involved. They are simple but useful.

The book closes with some detailed advice for interacting with the four different temperaments in general and then specifically the four individual type preferences within a given temperaments.

The final chapter is titled "How Will I Ever Look at People the Same Way Again?" Truthfully, you won't. You will notice things about people, and hopefully these things will help you improve your interactions with the people you come in contact with.

"Art"? Maybe as in fingerpainting. Aw that's harsh.
By Michael Noga
I generally like Meyers-Briggs personality books. The test is pretty acurate as far as standardized personality tests go. It's pretty flexible and encompassing and if you haven't taken it you should. You'll learn something about yourself.

That said, I don't think this book was the best example of what one can achieve using knowledge of Meyers-Briggs. The speed reading is not very revealing. The tips they give are things anyone with familiarity with the system could figure out on their own. In the beginning of the book one of the authors talks about the time she had to give a presentation to someone and she observed that he was a meticulous fellow and then used her amazing people reading skills to determine that he might be very detail oriented, so she crafted her presentation with that in mind. Really? A meticulous person might be detail oriented? Well madame how DO you DO it? It's not bad information but it's stuff you don't need if you have any of the other Meyers-Briggs books and a bit of intellectual horsepower. If you've never been introduced to these personality tests I guess this is an ok introduction, but eventually you'll want to move on to something a bit more meaty, like "Please Understand Me", or "Gifts Differing". There is a little new material here but it's sort of a re-heated version of the previous two books I just mentioned. Sure some of it is useful stuff, I just think there are better books out there. But that's just my opinion. It is worth a look, maybe check it out from the library first and see what you think.

Now a Challenger, Jessamy is moving up the ranks of the Fives--the complex athletic contest favored by the lowliest Commoners and the loftiest Patrons alike. Pitted against far more formidable adversaries, success is Jes's only option, as her prize money is essential to keeping her hidden family alive. She leaps at the chance to tour the countryside and face more competitors, but then a fatal attack on her traveling party puts Jes at the center of the war that Lord Kalliarkos--the prince she still loves--is fighting against their country's enemies. With a sinister overlord watching her every move and Kal's life on the line, Jes must now become more than a Fives champion.... She must become a warrior.

Praise for Poisoned Blade:"With strong characters and vivid worldbuilding that refuses to oversimplify individuals, cultures, and the opposing forces they represent, this sequel to Court of Fives (2015) blends emotional intelligence, passionate idealism, and realpolitik in a plot ending at the cliff's edge of revolutionary change. At once nuanced and thrilling--a worthy sequel."

Plot within plot, complex characterization
By Bookwyrm
Poisoned Blade is another excellent book by Kate Elliot. If you liked her Cold Magic series, you'll like her Court of Fives books. It was a complex and enjoyable read and a great addition to this series.

The storyline reveals plot within plot within plot, although only a few plot lines are resolved in this book; it's more of a bridge. And at times it shows. But there's a lot of story and character growth contained in that bridge. Jessamy is sucked into Gargaron's plot against her will, and only toward the end of the book, does she actually seem to be gaining a little wisdom. But then, it's her stubbornness and tenacity that makes her able to survive, so we have to forgive if that same tenacity makes it hard for her to recognize a change in her own beliefs. There is not much of Lord Kalliarko in this book; he's probably only in the last third or so. But he, too, has grown as a character.

This is a very much a book about class divides, a common people treated unfairly by an arrogant, cosmopolitan elite. At times it reminds me of tales about the French revolution with a racism/indigenous peoples plot thrown in, but then again, many countries have had similar stories of a privileged elite and a simmering anger in the underclasses.

I really liked the undercurrents of honor and duty lifting one above the call of revenge and societal expectations. Lots of good material to ponder, just as in Ms. Elliot's other books. I'm anxious to read the next book in this series.

I liked this story as much or more as book 1
By Amazon Customer
I liked this story as much or more as book 1. I've come to expect layering and layering of plots from a Kate Elliott fantasy, and this novel does not disappoint. There's definitely unpredictable twists and turns, and the building tension kept me wanting to read more. Unlike another reviewer, I enjoyed how Jes grew as a person, with realistic faults and triumphs, and the growing relationships between her and her family, friends, and enemies. If you enjoyed book 1, definitely give this one a read for its expanding scope of plot!

Much more about politics/scheming than in Court of Fives. I missed the strategy of Fives and the training scenes, but overall I liked the plot of this book better.

A Nearly Normal Life: A Memoir, by Charles L. Mee

As a fourteen-year-old boy from a small Midwestern town, Charles Mee believed in God, family, and his future, which, at the very least, included girls and a long spell as a hometown football hero. But when he collapsed one night at a school dance, his dreams began to vanish. In a narrative at once funny and profound, Mee brilliantly captures the era in which polio, not communism, was every American parent's nightmare. Unraveling the mysteries of his own Cold War youth, Mee gives voice both to the child with a potentially fatal disease and to the man whose recognition of himself as a disabled outsider has served to heighten his gifts as a storyteller.

From Publishers Weekly
"You don't recover from the events of life, you take them with you, you knit them in, you grow with them and around them; they become who you are; they are life itself; how else my life might have been is unknowable." The tone of Mee's memoir of learning to live with polio is an unlikely marriage of elegy and resentment overcome. Well, mostly overcome?and it's the degree to which Mee hasn't completely reconciled himself to the past that gives his book a nostalgia-puncturing edge. A playwright (The Berlin Circle) and historian (Meeting at Potsdam), Mee recalls how his world changed when he was diagnosed with polio. It was 1953, and he was 14. Although Mee recovered and fought to rebuild his damaged body enough to walk with the aid of a cane and a crutch, his carefree days of football and swimming were over. Mee evokes the aggressive optimism of the 1950s, when physicians and nurses staunchly insisted that anyone could recover and refused to acknowledge the despair of the patients in their care. As a result, many polio victims were subjected to useless operations and treatments because their frustrated doctors needed to "do something." Mee also describes the pervading climate of fear that polio triggered among parents and provides an informed account of how the Salk vaccine ended the epidemic. While he acknowledges that society's insistence on recovery and self-reliance did, in fact, play a role in fortifying his will to survive, Mee can't hide a certain bitterness about the emotional cost of keeping a stiff upper lip. His book is better for his honesty. Agent, Lois Wallace.

From Library Journal
Playwright and historian Mee (Playing God, S. & S., 1993) explores the many challenges he has faced and successes he can claim as a polio survivor. Beginning with his diagnosis at age 14 and ending with his current struggles with the symptoms of post-polio syndrome, he is always witty and sometimes profound. Mee adds texture and credibility to his already strong writing by judiciously using other sources: personal stories of fellow polio survivors, historical profiles of the 1950s, and histories of the polio virus (including Jane S. Smith's Patenting the Sun: Polio and the Salk Vaccine, LJ 4/15/90). Consistently, he refers to his favorite works of scholarship and classical philosophy (particularly the dialogs of Socrates) to illustrate the crucial roles books have played in his "re-birth" and self-discovery after polio. In addition to the importance of reading, the need of those who have had polio to be perceived as "survivors" rather than "victims" and of others to focus on the survivor's abilities rather than on his or her disabilites are major interrelated themes in the book. From Kirkus Reviews
Frank memoirs of an adolescence shaped by a bout with polio that changed forever the author's body and psyche. This slice of very personal history comes from a man better known for his plays and his diplomatic and political writings (The End of Or der: Versailles 1919, 1980, etc.). Mee was stricken with spinal polio in the summer of 1953, when he was 14 years old. From a healthy, athletic 160-pounder, he was rapidly transformed into a weak 90-pounder able to move only three fingers of one hand. Thr eaded through his recollections of his hospitalization and rehabilitation is a brief history of the disease, including a vivid portrait of the culture of fear it engendered, the role of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the National Foundation for Infantile Pa ralysis and the March of Dimes, Sister Kenny's excruciating therapeutic techniques, and the search for vaccines by Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin. Even more fascinating are his accounts of the useless medical and surgical treatments performed by doctors anxi ous to do something, anything, for their young patients. The heart of Mee's story, however, is his confrontation with the reality of what happened to him. Deeply ingrained with the ideal of the normalhe gives a wonderful picture of middle-American normali ty of the 1950s complete with paint-by-numbers art, Father Knows Best, and stay-at-home moms raising football-playing sons and cheerleader daughtersMee could not deny his own deviance from that normality as he struggled to pass for a normal teenager. Fort unately, the world of books and the mind opened to him, and he pays tribute to those who helped him find his way there. Mee ends these memoirs with his leaving home for Harvard, but an epilogue provides a glimpse of the nearly normal life he created for h imself in the years that followed. A reminder of a past era of conformity and a clear depiction of what it means to be an outsider. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Read This Book-- It's Good.

No matter how great a person's chances are of getting ill or injured, everybody always thinks "it's never going to happen to me." Charles L. Mee was no different than everybody else in the 1950s who thought that they would not get polio; he thought that it would be somebody else who would catch the disease. In his touching and witty memoir, A Nearly Normal Life, Mee tells of his arduous struggle to overcome his devastating case of polio during his teenage years; Mee was one of the millions who were afflicted with spinal polio during the epidemic of the 1950s. The author vividly recounts his battle against paralysis and death, as well as his endeavor to recover and return to the normalcy that the 1950s culture emphasized. Not only does the memoir give the reader a lucid and detailed picture of the Eisenhower years, but it is also a reflective essay about America in the 1950s, polio, and the American culture that relentlessly advocated the idea of being "normal." For those of us who did not live through the fifties, A Nearly Normal Life provides a good description of what life was like for the average middle-class American family.

A personal story attesting to the indomitable human spirit.
By A Customer
In the early fifties, polio was every parent's nightmare. Each summer it struck ruthlessly, killing and maiming children without warning. The virus "stripped away from the nerves their myelin sheath, which acts like insulation around an electric cord, so that the nerves short-circuited, sizzled, and died. they stopped sending signals to the muscles, and so the muscles stopped working. Arms and legs lay limp and useless." It was a vastly misunderstood disease which prompted treatments often painful and sometimes bizarre. Patients were covered in hot, wet blankets, stimulated by electric shock, immersed in boiling hot tubs, subjected to experimental surgeries, and imprisoned in iron lung machines. Hospitals sometimes had 60 children in iron lungs at one time jammed into one ward room. Charles Mee's account of the disease which irrevocably altered his life is both intriguing and horrifying, but always inspiring. An athlete as a teenager, he was forced to redefine himself. He emerged from a near-death experience to discover an intellectuality in himself which might never have been realized. The book is a personal story which attests to the indomitable human spirit, but it is also an absorbing account of a gruesome chapter in medical history.

From Publishers Weekly
Jason Herkimer and Marceline McAllister have been friends since Space Station Seventh Grade, though Marceline embarasses Jason with her trombone playing, goofy sunglasses and general refusal to conform. Thus, Jason is surprised to find himself in love with Marcelineand even more surprised when she rejects him. He indulges in sort of macho behavior until being part of the crowd is no longer satisfying. One day in the lunch line, a naive seventh grader, Rudy, starts choking. When Jason saves him using the Heimlich maneuver, Rudy grabs him in a grateful hug and won't let go. Jason is horrified at first because everyone in the cafeteria is watching, but understanding Rudy's terror, he gently hugs him back. Marceline is touched by Jason's kindness. They are reconciled, and their friendship/romance is ready to move to a new level. Spinelli's teenagers are fresh and funny, sometimes crude, sometimes poignant, and always very real. Jason's story will have readers rejoicing in recognition as he learns to accept himself and others.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-9 Jason Herkimer, the star of Spinelli's Space Station Seventh Grade (Little, 1982) is now in ninth grade and anxious to tell readers about his burgeoning sexuality and his romance with Marceline McAllister. While all of his friends seem to be scoring direct hits with their first loves, Jason is not certain where or how to begin, and his X-rated mind has to cope with a girl who thinks kissing is quite enough for now. Meanwhile, the steam rises from seemingly endless torrid stories of sexual conquests all about him. Spinelli has achieved a sort of reputation as a bad-boy of juvenile letters, and here he moves into previously untouched areaslots of hickeys, sperm, and hormones. It's all done for laughs, and Spinelli can be very funny, if very crude. Some adults will shudder or sputter over this one, but YAs will love it. It's a quick, witty read, and even the print is big. As a teacher, this is one book I won't have on my shelf.
By A Customer
I am a 7th grade reading teacher, and I have read both Space Station Seventh Grade and its sequel Jason and Marceline. Space Station Seventh Grade is a good book and is very true to life in middle school. Jason and Marceline consists of guys talking about who's "doing it" and the size of girls' breasts and how they'd like to get their hands on them. This may be the type of conversation that goes on in middle school, but I think it is demeaning to the girls. The book summary on Amazon.com says that Jason is surprised to find that Marceline rejects him, but that's not quite the whole story. Jason pressures Marceline to let him give her a hickey, and he gets angry and stomps off when she won't let him. They finally get back together, and she makes him promise he won't give her a hickey. I'm concerned that the message it sends is that girls who don't give in to their boyfriends will lose them, and that's not a message I want to endorse.

A book with a real story!
By Savannah Saunders
Jason and Marceline is the best book I have ever read! I am a 13 yr female and it took me two days to read! I could not put it down!I even read it during my softball game!It is a book that I related to very well...I mean in the way that Jason and Marceline's relathionship is! A very real book and is different because it was not written for children but not for adults either!A teenage story! It is a book for all sexes also...after reading it I gave it to my boyfriend to read! He loved it also, the story is much like our relashionship...most likly why i loved it so much! The story is about how Jason and Marceline were friends then became boyfriend and girlfriend...the problem is that they are always fighting! It tells their story and how thay survived their freshman year! I also loved it cause it was funny, sad, and had romance! I give it 5 Stars 100%! PLZ READ IT! I can't stop talking about it and either will you! Must I also say that I am not the kind of person who likes to read books? Give me a break! I am 13!

Jason and Marceline not for everyone, but wait a minute...
By A Customer
I teach middle-school Language Arts, and, while I wouldn't necessarily read this book WITH my class, I would recommend it to students to read for outside reading. Spinelli is a master with the written word; I read the majority of his books as a teenager and will reread them on occasion even now. I must disagree with the teacher who felt Spinelli's portrayal of girls in Jason and Marceline was poor. In the end, Jason learns that Jason must be Jason and Marceline must be Marceline. He learns to accept her as she is--eccentricities and all. Jason is flawed, and he is definitely not politically correct. (Name a middle schooler who is!) Regardless, Spinelli can somehow recapture the ambivalence of adolescence while possessing the wisdom of an adult...the mark of a truly gifted writer.

The Interrogators: Inside the Secret War Against al Qaeda, by Chris Mackey, Greg Miller

More than 3,000 prisoners in the war on terrorism have been captured, held, and interrogated in Afghanistan alone. But no one knows what transpired in those interactions between prisoner and interrogator-until now. In THE INTERROGATORS, Chris Hogan, the senior interrogator at Bagram Air Base and in Kandahar, where al-Qaeda and Taliban prisoners were first detained and questioned, lifts the curtain. Soldiers specially trained in the art of interrogation went face-to-face with the enemy. These mental and psychological battles were as grueling, dramatic, and important as any in the war on terrorism. We learn how, under Hogan's command, his small group of 'soldier spies' engineered a breakthrough in interrogation strategy, rewriting techniques and tactics grounded in the Cold War. Hogan reveals the tricks of the trade, and we see how his team-four men and one woman-responded to the pressure and the prisoners. By the time Hogan's group was finished, virtually no prisoner went unbroken. Riveting and illuminating, THE INTERROGATORS is a fascinating work of nonfiction that reads like the most exciting of spy novels. It is the first and only inside account into this world we have never been allowed into and is sure to be one of the most talked about books of 2004.

From Publishers Weekly
This fascinating memoir reports from one of the most crucial and controversial fronts in the war on terror. The pseudonymous Mackey was an interrogator at military prisons in Afghanistan, tasked with sussing out the secrets of suspected Taliban and al-Qaeda members. He and journalist Miller take readers inside the prison cells and interrogation rooms, where interrogators choreograph elaborate mind games and fight epic battles of will with their often formidable captives. Their account's full of the engrossing lore and procedure of interrogation, the thrust and parry of baited queries and cagey half-truths, and the occasional dramatic breakthrough when a prisoner cracks. But it also reveals the squalor and drudgery of the prison camps, the exhaustion, bad temper and frequent ineptitude of the interrogators and the many lapses in the American intelligence effort, especially by the CIA, which Mackey regards as an arrogant, secretive and incompetent organization. Mackey deplores the Abu Ghraib abuses and insists that his unit never violated the Geneva Conventions. They flirted, he acknowledges, with stress positions and sleep deprivation, but this was nothing, he claims, beyond what army recruits and the interrogators themselves routinely endured; their main weapons seem to have been veiled threats to return Arab prisoners to their homelands, where they would face real torture. The book, which was vetted by the Pentagon, will not settle the questions surrounding American treatment of prisoners in Iraq and elsewhere. But it does give a vivid, gritty look at the pressures and compromises attendant on this unconventional war.

The Interrogators, a worth book to read and learn from the experiences of another Army.
By Jorge F. Duran
I think we should have read this book in the seventies in order to avoid the mistakes in our "dirty war". As we know, some Latin America's countries based the doctrine of counterinsurgency in French Doctrine used in Indochina and Argelia. This doctrine is described in some books, such us Modern Warfare written by Col (Fr) Roger Trinquier. He justified in some ways the use of torture in order to obtain information. When Latin America's armies adopted this doctrine, they didn't give the necessary time to see the effects of it. The interrogation under torture could have obtained information; however, the strategic effects in the long term of the torture were disastrous for the legitimacy of the struggle against communism. Moreover, the torture is immoral and is a crime. Thirty years after the war, torturers and the soldiers, who fought the enemy inside the law, were both equally accused for violation of Human Rights.

After this comments, I'd like to continue with the book, Part one is focused in the training of interrogators in the US Army and the British Army. The differences are, in my point of view very important. The main difference is, meanwhile the US Army is trained to fight against a conventional enemy, the British prepare their people to both conventional and unconventional enemies. This part finished with the terrorist attack of 11/ 9 and the built up of the force to fight in Afghanistan.

In Part II we can read about the first operations of TF 500 at Kandahar. Here is described how the interrogation is developed. This part shows us about the ICE (the interrogation control element), the duties of the interrogators and the reports. Three things I've found remarkable in this part. The first thing is how to break deception techniques. The second is about the screening, its purpose and its differences and relations with the interrogation process and its value to select prisoners by their will to collaborate and their information. And finally, the most interesting thing is about the body language and how to use it to know if the prisoner is telling the truth.

The Part III is about the TF 500 in Bagram. Here the authors explain us how to use the mobile interrogation team to support SF and how we can develop an interrogation plan. One of the best chapters is "How far to go". It suggest us the principle of "you must not handle a POW worst than you handle our own troops, however, you should not give POW advantages against our interrogators". Other useful tools to improve the interrogation process is the use of snitches and rumors or PSYOPS.

The Part IV is about the relief of the interrogators and the newcomers' lack of understanding of the techniques learnt by the TF 500.

The appendix is a very good brief of the approach techniques.

The book was written with humor and is very easy to read. It doesn't have too much acronyms. In my point of view, the most important lesson after I've read this book is that the interrogation is an intelligence duel more than a physical one. Moreover, any physical punishment in the interrogation is not only immoral, is a way to admit the lack of skills of the interrogator.

What The Media Wouldn't Tell You -- The Truth
By Montana Jack
This is a story about a critical team of soldiers faced with a nearly impossible task--trying to extract critical intelligence vital to the US' war on terror. It should be a must read for every critic from journalists to university campuses so there's a more accurate and sobering look at what went on vs. the misrepresentation slung around by everyone from John Kerry and Barack Obama to the NY Times.

If you liked M.A.S.H., you'll love the Interrogators
By Woon Socket
I really liked this book! It is a serious book and an informative book. It is also a very entertaining book!

I bought the book because of an interview with the author I heard on N.P.R. I expected to be informed. I did not expect to be entertained.

Rare in non-fiction, these authors have a gift for presenting appealing characters. I was left wishing the book had been many more pages. I want to know what happened to the Indonesian teenager after he went off with the Brits. I want to know more about the Major with her cats. And what about Papa Smurf? There are good guys, bad guys (and they are not all on the 'other side'); there are the inept, the incompentent, the disillusioned and the ardent. The military in all its usual glory.

It DOES NOT have a proper index and I strongly recommend in future editons an index be included.

This is every bit as rich and varied and as entertaining as M.A.S.H. And in the hands of the right people this would be a terrific movie and could be a fine t.v. series.
