Of interest to would-be specialists

This book should be of interest to people who are interested in becoming specialist growers, and especially breeders, particularly if they are interested in one of the few plant types covered: Hostas, Daylilies, Roses, Antique Fruit Trees, Herbal Arts, Dwarf Conifers, Peonies, Wildflowers (of the Southeastern woods), Lilies, Peppers. One does learn what it takes to be such a specialist, and the pros and cons of various plants, but there are better sources for info on each type of plant.

There is beginning info on propagation of most of these plant types, and on setting up the landscape and work areas for growing and propagating them. It is not especially helpful for general horticulturists looking for tips on various types of plants. Perhaps "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden" is the best resource for most such gardeners, and/or whichever book best covers a given genus or other category (there are books exclusively on most of these plant types).

I purchased this for sentimental reasons. Not having my mother around after my first born came into this world, I needed a book to refresh my memory on Chilean nursery rhymes told to me as a child. This book did just that.

An Adorable Book!

My daughter enjoys looking at the pictures in this cute little book. The traditional nursery rhymes that Spanish children usually learn are there. I can't really complain about this book. I don't think you'll have a very good time with this if you aren't proficient in Spanish enough to say the words. (Written Spanish is fairly easy to read. You may not know what you said, but it's pretty easy to pronounce.) I like this book and would recommend it for culture if nothing else.

Not too difficult to read, but difficult to sing!

The vocabulary is basic enough, however, due to the way the songs are translated, it is dificult to sing to the same rhythm... Maybe after Spanish 3 I will be able to figure this out?

Cute binder and idea but not a lot of substance

Because of its cuteness it got the 2 stars. It really didn't fulfill all the things it said it would cover. The smallness and thinness of the book amazed me and the stuff inside was pretty basic. Definitely not something for the newbie, too fluffy. There are better dream dictionaries and spell books out there.

Not the best out of the authors books but still worth collecting

This wasn't as great as I had hoped for based on the last 2 books I have bought from this same author... but still if your interested in learning something or just getting something simple about your dreams it is still a nice addition. However most of the book contains a dream dictionary... which in my eyes makes it lose 1 star... there isn't as much spells or information as the cover leads you on to believe... which makes it lose another star in my eyes. *shrug* The authors other 2 books are much better if you ask me... check out The Good Spell Book or The Fortune Telling one

Great starter book for burgeoning bluebirder

Once you have a bluebird visit your backyard, you WILL be hooked...and you'll start looking for anything and everything to lure them back--it sounds crazy, but I think every bluebirder started this way! I read just about everything I could find about them on the internet, and you can find tons of information there, but sometimes I'd rather consult a book or two--The Bluebird Book is one of my two.

Actually it is pretty basic, and I thought it was too basic at times, but the further I read there was still a lot of good information about bluebird behavior, feeding habits, preferred habitat, nesting, nest boxes, predators of the bluebird, predator prevention, and what I didn't see anyplace else...bluebird language! But I think what kept me reading was the fantastic photographs--the photos will draw you in, and if you weren't too serious about doing the 'bluebirding thing', you will be after starting with this book. What it lacks in "complete reference" will certainly prompt you to take the next step of getting another more advanced book, pouring thru bluebird internet sites, or setting up a nest box or two in your yard. Just a note--depending on where you live in the US, parts of this book may not apply--but that is the same for other bluebird books also; don't get discouraged over it. Most bluebird books cover Eastern, Western, and Mountain bluebirds all at once, and what works in the east, may not work in the west, or south, for example.

The other book that goes into great detail on just about everything bluebird related is the Bluebird Monitor's Guide. This should be your next book if you can find it. Excellent stuff, expands on what you learned in the Bluebird Book, and lists many lessons and lessons-learned, easy and hard, from average folks who became very passionate about bluebirds.

After starting with the Bluebird Monitor's Guide, The Bluebird Book filled in a few areas and had some good detailed photos. And all the photos will have you wishing to have these beauties grace your neighborhood. Another note--there's also a Stokes video about bluebirding...I haven't seen it, but much of what I've read about it online is not very positive. Stick with this book and the Monitor's Guide and you will have plenty of solid information about bluebirds, setting up PROPER nest box(es), and providing a safe environment for a bluebird family, or any native wildbird family for that matter. Please be a responsible bird landlord!

The Stokes bird books major in the sheer delight of discovering the bird in question. The 1991 STOKES BLUEBIRD BOOK carries this tradition forward without missing a step.

The book's three sections explore 'The Birds', 'Attracting Bluebirds', an 'Bluebird Behavior'. The first section introduces this captivating bird by way of poetry and observations made about it, mostly when the species was more plentiful than it is today. The Stokes then present the 'Eastern', 'Mountain', and 'Western Bluebird' varieties.

The second section details what we've learned about compensating for the habit destruction that has made Bluebird numbers drop precipitously in recent times. I bought my copy after undertaking the Quijote's quest of adding a bluebird house to my Indiana front yard. It was immediately fitted out by a male house wren whose spouse chose other digs.

A final section, comprising nearly half the book's pages, follows these birds through their life stages.

Through 96 pages, the authors' prose cannot veil their admiration for these birds and their sheer delight in sympathetic proximity to them.

It all adds up to a winner.

I love the book. It has given me a lot of tips, especially in getting and placing a nesting box in an area where the birds have been seen.
Looking forward to some great adventures in seeing these beautiful birds and hopefully encouraging their return to the Northwest.

Morison's book has been roundly decried for any number of baseless reasons. The work is certainly not an apology for Columbus, but it doesn't start off with the currently in vogue premise that the European discovery of America was the work of the devil. Morison's book remains the foundation of any approach to the life of the great explorer. Over-flowing with data and acute observations, it is world's - and oceans - away from the finicky over-intellectualized stuff that passes as 'serious' biography today. Morison clearly appreciates just those features of Colombus that would be anathema in person to most modern published biographers, generally academics, and not men of action.
Morison set out to trace the actual voyages by duplicating the voyages himself. The result remains fascinating, insightful and engaging. The book's greatest value, apart from this investigation, is the authorial voice - commanding and not afraid to speak out. I found it the right voice for a discussion of Columbus, but many today don't like this, finding it presumptious. Given Morison's scope and knowledge perhaps they are the ones who are presumptious.

Mariner yes, but none else.

This is one of several books I have been reading to answer the currently raging debate over Christopher Columbus, explorer or Indian slaughterer? Written in the late 1940's, the author Morison spends the first pages of this book hailing Columbus as the "Discoverer of the New World", which we know is not true. Page 1 also states that "This was the most spectacular and most far-reaching geographical discovery ever recorded in human history." This and other terms of unbridled honor almost turned me off, but I later found that Morison balances his opinions well with candid observations of what Columbus did poorly. He clearly points out that Columbus was a terrible scientist and mathemetician, poor governer over people, a self defeating negotiator, and an absolute failure as a colony planner. Although Columbus was generally very compassionate toward the natives, his short comings eventually lead to absolute bedlam in the "Indies" and when faced with this strife, Columbus and his two brothers responded by killing both natives and Spaniards, which further lead to the expulsion of the Columbus brothers from the region. I found the book to be extremely informative and it gave me a clear picture of how Columbus came to be a hero, victim and tyrant at the same time. Morison makes the conclusion that Columbus was an extroardinary seaman and mariner, and he would have been best served if he had stuck with only that. Every other enterprise Columbus tried only lead to failure and shame. I highly recommend the book despite its antiquated writing style. Buy it.

Christopher Colubus, Mariner, is a very enlightening novel concerning Christopher columbus and his travels that made him immortal. By reading this book, I discovered many interesting facts about Columbus. Columbus, known by many different names, was not the Mr. Perfect that some people make him out to be. In fact,his life was far from perfection. As Morison's epic story unfolds , the reader becomes more and more connected with the hero. He was a normal person,seeking a place in the world.The readers also get the chance to balance on the edge of their seats as Columbus deals with mutiny,battles with cannibals, befriends natives, and rescues beautiful girls. He faces diseases, mosquitoes, storms, and quicksand. This wonderful, interesting work of art certainly does old Chris justice. Unfortunately, Columbus is'nt here to read it, nor did he receive the respect or the recognition he deserved at the time that he lived.But, like many renowned people- Mozart, Beethoven, and Van Go to name a few- he received his due credit after death.
