Seriously ecchi!

This manga is by Suu Minazuki, the creator of Heaven's Lost Property, and it carries a very similar theme of a random horny teenage boy getting an otherworldly love interest seemingly out of nowhere, although this one currently doesn't have an anime based on it. This has been one of Minazuki's on-and-off projects as he's been doing it since 2008, but only about 4-5 collected volumes have been printed so far.

Shouta is an otaku who has a serious fix on 2-D girls, and not real life flesh 'n blood girls. He's totally hung up with a cat-eared schoolgirl named Sora, and somehow she comes out of Shouta's graphic novel and into the real world, even though her personality in this reality is much more rough and aggressive than her fictional background. Sora declares that Shouta is officially her master, and is for some reason destined to take over the world. From this point on, Sora keeps bringing over girls to Shouta's dorm room for him to impregnate to help expand his "dynasty". This ends up getting Sora arrested several times, and eventually kicked out of the dorms. However, his childhood friend Ryoko(who got him kicked out in the first place)offers to take him in, and Shouta is shocked to discover that her father is actually the creator of the manga Sora came from. Later on, another version of Sora arrives claiming to be the "real" one, leaving the first Sora's origin to be much more questionable.

This story is pretty decent so far, although its kinda clear that Minazuki works on this title sparingly from time-to-time. It's very much not for younger readers, but its not a full-on hentai title either. Give it a look as its just now finally coming out in America through Yen Press.

For the perverted at heart

I totally loved this title! I honestly didn't expect to like this manga but right away within the first few pages, it had me hooked. First of all i find it to be pretty funny with the outrageous things the female character Sora does and says. I was very much delighted with the humor and nicely drawn characters. I would highly recommend this to people who like mangas like Monster Musume & Omamori Himari. I love my ecchi titles and this one is definitely starting out strong. Storyline wise, i cant wait for the next volume to come out!

As Addictive as Chocolate...

Look! Another Book! is, like the first, Look! A Book!, is a seek-and-find book. The text in seek-and-find books usually is just there to tell you what to seek. Not so here. Sure you get the directions, but so much more, and the writing is at least ten times funnier than you would expect. That's all I'm saying about the text because I refuse to give away the best rhymes.

Every two-page spread in this book is a feast, or more appropriately, a smorgasbord, for the eyes. Not one square centimeter is wasted. My absolute favorite, though, is the art gallery. So many wonderful homages on that page. The engineering in this book is no mean feat. It made my brain hurt to try to figure out how those cut-outs can highlight individual characters or objects but seem to disappear when the page is closed. Finally, I figured it out: It's magic. Don't tell me otherwise.

If you do get this book, don't skip the end-papers or the dedication -- I'm just saying.

A Great Seek-and-Find book for younger children

Wow. Really like this book which essentially a Seek-and-Find book for younger children. If you are familiar with WHERE'S WALDO and other look-and-find books, what you have is a busy two pages of graphics, with a list of objects you are challenged to find.

Bob Staake's book is very much like that, except that it has clever rhymes and examples. He presents the examples before each search venue. Something along the lines of,

LOOK!
A boot!
A fruit!
A crossing guard newt!

The CLEVER part is that there are holes in the pages of that show the things that are mentioned in the prose. So you have the fun of reading the book to a young child, and the fun of looking for the other objects in the pictures.

EVEN BETTER, at the end there is another list of items to be found. Which, of course, will be a lot more challenging since you won't even know what pages they are on.

Great fun. I laughed at the rhymes, and found this a fun book to share with younger kids.

Appropriate ages will vary. I can see using this with a preschoolers on up to the first or second grade. Definitely a book that will last a long time as moms and dads can find their own items in amongst the venues to have children find. Good value.

So much to look at!

Drawings are fabulous and I think that children will not tire of it. SO much to look at. I liked the way the book itself directs you to go back to the beginning to look for other things. The parents of the little one I gave it too were very happy with it.

Kindergarten-Grade 2. Tandy and her Daddy go off to the big city to buy her mama an Easter hat. As soon as she spots the broad-brimmed beauty with fruits and flowers and four little eggs nestled at one side, Tandy knows this is the right one, and her father buys it in spite of the high price. Mama insists that the expensive item be returned, but Daddy wears it on his milk-delivery route so that she must keep it. As the proud family sits in church that Easter, the eggs begin to hatch and are mothered by a starling sitting in the rafters. Mama's hat ends up on a tree limb and serves as a nest to generations of birds. The tale is based on a true family memory, but children will have to decide for themselves when fantasy takes over. The warm evocation of family and small-town life is in the vein of Gloria Jean Pinkney's Sunday Outing (Dial, 1994) and Elizabeth Howard's Aunt Flossie's Hats (and Crab Cakes Later) (Houghton, 1991). Chen's mellow watercolors feature happy faces bathed in the warm sunshine of memory and a variety of interesting perspectives. The solid reality of this family and the fun of the ending help move the story along. Ages 5^-8. With Easter approaching, Tandy travels to the city with her father to select a new hat for Mama. Mama considers the hat too expensive but finally relents. On Easter, the hat is the scene of a "miracle" when birds hatch from the eggs on the brim and the mother bird joins them. The soft, expressive watercolor illustrations portray a loving African American family, but children may wonder about Tandy's sister and two brothers, who appear in a family portrait but are otherwise absent in both text and pictures. Nor is the diction consistent: Mama switches from her initial Black English to standard speech later in the tale. Although thematically reminiscent of Ezra Jack Keats' Jennie's Hat (1966), this lacks Keats' clear focus and lean prose. Verbose and digressive, it reads like a chapter from a novel and may be better suited for collections of transitional fiction than of picture books. Linda Perkins

A truth-is-stranger family story from Milich (Can't Scare Me!, 1995, etc.) and newcomer Chen. The daughter and father in a rural black family travel by horse-and-wagon 25 miles to the big city to buy the mother an ornate hat for Easter Sunday. At home, Mama deems it too expensive and puts it aside to return. When Daddy wears it on his milk route the next morning, he tells her the hat has been worn, and she must keep it--a fact that doesn't entirely displease her. She wears the hat to Easter service, where four bird's eggs on its brim hatch during the sermon. The babies' mother has apparently followed it from town to rear the babies, and the whole congregation is caught up in the miracle. At home, Mama places the hat in the branches of a tree. Although the jacket copy makes reference to the truth of the tale, readers will find it farfetched and long-winded. Chen's portraits are often graceful, occasionally awkward, focusing on people, leaving the landscape and interiors as little more than sketches. Miz Fannie Mae's Fine New Easter Hat is a delightful story of an Easter long ago. Kids love listening to the story over and over. Also great to use in comparing today's Easter with those of long ago.

Her vision of the Amish seems rose-colored?not even the fire disturbs the underlying calm?but both the fire and the one-day barn-raising carry palpable excitement. In Fuchs's (Ragtime Tumpie) similarly idealized oil paintings, the Amish characters, clad in their traditional garb, move against radiant, broadly brushed pastoral settings. The new barn glows golden in the light of the new moon; the jars of preserves on the kitchen counter gleam as the sun pours in. The mood, never broken, is the real star of the book. Ages 4-8.

When expert builder Samuel Stultzfoot tells the child he's needed to relay instructions to the men, he is honored to be assigned such an important role. At the end of the day, the family gives thanks for their good neighbors and the barn. Matthew's "Amen" is a mere whisper but his satisfaction in a job well done speaks volumes. Luminous, impressionistic-style oil paintings reveal images of Amish life: the horse-drawn buggies, the unadorned clothing, the camaraderie and industriousness of the people. Direct and reflected light warm the full-page illustrations with gold, copper, and brown hues. Poetic language and stunning artwork pay tribute to a close-knit lifestyle and a commitment to family and community.

On a Monday in July, lightning strikes Matthew Yoder's family's barn, and on Friday his entire Amish community gathers to raise a new one, for "barns come first on a proper Amish farm, even before the house." In language that is supple and graceful, Yolen's text first follows Matthew as he begins to take his place in working the farm with his father and brothers; then lightning "like a stooping hawk" strikes the windmill that powers their machinery. The alarm is sounded, and all come to help, but the barn burns to the ground. Samuel Stulzfoot designs barns, and when the men come to raise a new barn, and the women come to feed them, Matthew is given the task of carrying Stulzfoot's instructions to the workers. Fuchs' full-page paintings, which face each page of text, make the plain clothing, broad faces, and sunlit fields glow with sumptuous light. The edges of fruit jars, horses' rumps, and barn framing are honeyed and silvered, making Amish bounty beautiful indeed. As in Yolen's recent House, House , the meaning of home and community underlies the text. What the Amish believe is never made explicit, but their values are limpidly clear. The Amish Community in Raising Yoder's Barn

Jane Yolen has written a substantial number of picturebooks. She touches fantasy, the ghoulish, the comic, and also thecultural in her many titles. Some of her titles have struck me as too dark or gory for young children, and some have struck me as a little too political, but most of her work I have found quite enjoyable. Of all her books that I have read, however, Raising Yoder's Barn is the best.
It is an exploration of the Amish community way of life. The story is told from the point of view of a young boy, Yoder's son. He tells of a lightning strike that burns his family's barn to the ground, and the resulting "barn raising" that their Amish community holds to help the family recover from the loss. The text is beautiful, almost poetic, and Bernie Fuchs's paintings offer an emotional enhancement to the story. He uses slight blurring and an emphasis on light to make emotional statements with each one. It's lovely.
The story nicely conveys the religious faith of the Amish, with Yoder encouraging his family at the end of the barn raising to give thanks to God for His wonderful provision.
A poignant way to introduce children to the Amish lifestyle.

Wonderful story...a MUST have!

I got this book from the library because of the beautiful illustrations but had no idea that the story would be as charming as the pictures. It is the sweet story of a community who rebuilds the Yoder's barn after it is burned in a storm. Told by a little boy in the Yoder family who is coming to the age of working with his father, the story has an innocent, simple quality. I highly recommend this book! A must for any good children's library!!!!

Get it for Bernie Fuchs' Illustrations

I bought this book purely for the illustrations by master illustrator, Bernie Fuchs. Bernie Fuchs was an illustrator from the "old school" of Illustration; creating masterful commercial illustrations long before the advent of Photoshop, et. al. If you are an art student, or simply an art lover, do get this book, and sample his luscious, yet subdued palette; his dramatic compositions; and his use of "pure" light against darkened backgrounds. The story is secondary to the artwork. How I wish I could have owned a "Fuchs" original!

Jane Mount is an artist and illustrator. Her paintings of bookshelves have caught the eye of media outlets like The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Daily Candy, and InStyle, among others. She lives in northern California with her husband and two cats.

Thessaly La Force is a writer and editor who has worked at The Paris Review, The New Yorker, and the New York Public Library. She is currently attending the Iowa Writer's Workshop and is working on a collection of short stories about objects and aesthetics. Thessaly divides her time between Iowa City and New York City; she also has two cats and shares a birthday with Jane.

Charming Illustrations, Pointless Pseudo-Interviews

My Ideal Bookshelf is an interesting thought experiment. A great deal of the pleasure in reading it comes from spotting a familiar title on one of these imaginary bookshelves, then scanning your own real world library and seeing a physical copy of it nestled between bookends. It's also great fun trying to create your own list of essentials. What books changed you as a person, formed you into the embittered attorney or giddy anesthesiologist or cheeky carpenter you are today? Which novels or essays do you carry around inside your skull?

The range of people who answered these questions is interesting, but narrow. Most are familiar names from the worlds of writing, film, and art. The book goes through them alphabetically and assumes you know who each person is, although you will find single paragraph micro-biographies at the very back of the book if you find yourself asking, "Who?" There's no explanation as to why this particular set of folks was chosen, which suggests convenience and cooperation as the motivating factors, but you should be able to find at least two or three who grab your attention, no matter what your interests.

The real strength of this book is the illustrations. Each book spine is beautifully detailed and painstakingly accurate. You will be surprised by how a font or particular shade of orange will instantly call up a memory of the novel before you even look at the title. Book covers are designed to seize hold of your eyes as you scan a crowded shelf, and the drawings here display the many different ways publishers have tried to make their products stand out. Simplicity, explosions of color, delicate linework, or blocky leaden letters. Mount's art style captures all of these techniques, while adding her own distinct fingerprint to them. Something about the slightly wobbly outlines of the novels lends them a childlike charm, no matter how adult the words inside the covers.

The written portion of the book is less successful. Each participant discusses their selections, but they're given very little space to do so. Almost every person picked ten or more books to line their imaginary bookshelves but were only given four to six brief paragraphs to explain their choices. This means they either ignore most of their selections and talk about only one title or spit out one sentence summaries that don't add all that much. I understand the desire to match a page of text with a page of illustration, but if you're only going to allow a person twenty seconds to describe a lifetime of passion for reading, what comes out is inevitably going to be shallow and rather pointless.

There are two potential ways to fix this. First, let your sources talk. If you assume that readers care enough to ask what various authors, artists, and chefs love to read, then those same readers are probably patient enough to find out why. Give your participants enough time and enough pages to say something meaningful about their choices, to tell an anecdote, to gush over how dreamy Hemmingway is. Anything, really, as long as it actually adds a dimension to the discussion.

Alternatively, just publish the illustrations. Leave the book as a pure, abstract thought experiment with noteworthy figures and celebrities picking out whatever books they like and readers extrapolating the meaning behind each choice.

As it is now, the little pseudo-interview blurbs just detract from the beautiful illustrations done by Mount. They serve only to frustrate those who are looking for real insight into the people creating these imaginary bookshelves or to distract those who just want to admire artfully recreated book spines.

In short, the concept behind My Ideal Bookshelf is clever and will appeal to any bibliophile. The illustrations are slightly whimsical and lovingly rendered. Unfortunately the book is let down by its structure with the text portions squeezed into tiny spaces and ultimately into irrelevance.

I love this book. Imagine your bookshelf published. You are what you read. The Ideal Bookshelf is a very interesting perspective on favorite books of people from a variety of successful, creative, artistic careers. A wide range of creativity is represented; from Tony Hawks the professional snowboarder to the poet Jorie Graham. The idea is to relay to the reader how and why certain books influenced these individuals, in their own words, and perhaps get you to ask a few questions of yourself. Do your most memorable books affect your lot in life, or does your lot in life determine what you read and relish? Is your bookshelf were to be published would you be honest, or maybe pick books that make you look deep, insightful, smart? Either way you are influenced by the books you put on your bookshelf. But would you have the confidence to make it public? These showcased individuals did. An illustration accompanies each bookshelf narrative creating a colorful picturesque coffee table book. Artistic and Varied -- Not Just for Bookworms

I'm a bona fide bookworm, and so books about books are always appealing to me. As a bookworm, I'm not sure I got what I expected from this book, because I would have preferred in-depth discussion about specific titles that might have been familiar to me.

However, I'm still giving this 4-stars, because of the whole package. My teen daughter is an artist, and so I've become much more aware of art, and this is a BEAUTIFUL book, so it would be perfect as a coffee table book or library feature. The entry from each person appears on one side of the page, and the other side has a full-page drawing of the books (similar to the one featured on the cover).

There are quite a few authors featured, but there are also several artists -- from all sorts of fields -- chefs and professionals from other careers, so the books that are featured are not for bookworms only.

I give Runaway a 2.5 I'm not terribly impressed with this one In fact I was slightly disappointed with how the story was delivered I was excited to start this one and sadly it wasn't what I expected It may be a good read for some but I'd have to say that Runaway is probably my least favorite of the Smallville books I've read so far

Unbelievable Plot Line

I have all the Smallville books, and I found this book one of the weaker ones. Set in the beginning of Smallville (First Season), Colon has almost completely ignored the relationships forged in the first season television show. Yes, Clark and Lex are friends, but that is the extent of anything Smallville. In this book, Clark runs away and lives in the city with a ragtag bunch of runaways. He gets involve in their criminal ways, and falls for one of the runaways, a grungy tough street girl. There is very little mention of Lex, Chloe, Lana or Pete. But worse, Clark seems out of character. In most cases, when Clark is out of character, he is affected by red kryptonite or even kryptonite. Here, there isn't kryptonite to affect him, but he acts reckless and irresponsible. For Smallville fans, this is a letdown.

WHY DOES CLARK RUN AWAY FROM HOME?

I have been a fan of Smallville since it first came on TV in 2001. I watch it every Wednesday and Sunday but I prefer reading the book in the Smallville Series. I really enjoying reading Runaway By Colon because it has action packed right into the book and Clark feels that he cannot stand living at home so he runs away from Smallville and goes to Metropolis to start a new life but everyone in his hometown is worried about him because they are not sure if he will ever return to Smallville. Clark's parents are really worried about him a lot so his dad Jonathan Kent calls the sheriff and tells him that his only son is missing and he does not know anything about the details of his absence only to find out that Clark ran away so that he would not be such a huge burden to his parents.

About the Author
Stephen Karcher PhD has worked with divinatory texts for more than 30 years. He was a speaker at the Eranos Foundation and supervised their I Ching Project. He is generally acknowledged as one of the world's leading experts on the psychological and spiritual uses of divination.

Relationship IChing vs Lovers IChing, same or different?

The "Lover's I Ching" and "Symbols of Love" both by Stephen Karcher are amazing wonderful clear and revealing books. I especially like finding out when you have a moment that is a focus-type (my word. the review mentions "22 models of relationships") of relationship, a more powerful time.

Stephen Karcher's I Ching translation (the big one) has supplanted other versions I have used in my (since 1967) history of using the I Ching for my life. One thing to notice is he extracts the reality whivhis the positivism out of the time. And he links you to the original Chinese. This helps me to see when one hexagram is using the same concept, the same word, as another hexagram.

I have a question. Are these books the same? What is the difference? I haven't seen the black fuzzy one for years.(Lover's I Ching, Hardcover. PUBLISHERS: it should come in a box. imho)

To add to the editorial review of this one, he has had some people who work with relationships add interesting material to this book (Symbols of Love), to help you think through the issues of the time, pictured in the hexagram and echoed by what you cast.

Outstanding I Ching for Personal Relationships

Karcher has done it again in this relational I Ching. You get the original text and moving lines along with very apt interpretations of the Yi for love and friendship. Karcher also dips into the mythology and shamanism of the I Ching for some very lively and uplifting reading. I can't recommend this too highly.
