Here's how physician Gerald Ross of the Environmental Health Center in Dallas describes multiple chemical sensitivity, or MCS: "Think of a patient as a rain barrel. The water in the barrel is the total load of environmental pollutants that the body must cope with. Then along comes some other source of stress. But the barrel can't hold it, and it pours out. The overflow represents a health problem ... and you get sick." The consequences of the sickness are severe; lives are radically and sometimes permanently disrupted. And the solutions to 20th-century allergies are painstaking and expensive. Worse, some physicians and psychiatrists say that MCS is all in people's heads, and that these people are being abetted by overzealous scientists who ignore basic scientific principles. You don't have to agree with one side or the other to find the assertions in Allergic to the Twentieth Century compelling, though; in fact, it may go down better if you start it without any preconceived notions.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), or EI (environmental illness), is a poorly understood phenomenon that has no scientifically accepted definition or treatment. However, one commonality among MCS sufferers is development of physical symptoms after exposure to chemical substances. As symptoms appear, sufferers can become hypersensitive to many everyday chemicals, such as perfume, household cleansers, and exhausts. Many self-help books address this medical mystery, including classics like Bonnye Matthews's Chemical Sensitivity (McFarland, 1992), Janice Stubbe Wittenberg's The Rebellious Body (LJ 11/1/96), and Sherry Rogers's Tired or Toxic? Of the two new additions to the field, Radetsky's book is the more comprehensive in terms of MCS case histories, the relationship of MCS to Gulf War syndrome, medicolegal difficulties in establishing MCS as a "real" disease entity, and the possible cause(s) of MCS. By contrast, Breaking Out of Environmental Illness is an account by two MCS sufferers who on their journey to find a cure find solace from a "great spiritual teacher and healer who has a deep connection to Earth and humanity." Radetsky's book traces the history and causes of the disease (multiple chemical sensitivity)with detailed research, including some startling new case histories. It is the first such book to take a look at the shocking increase in illnesses caused by our chemically saturated environment and offers some frightening possibilities, including the charge that certain scientific and medical powers are working to discredit MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity). good read for a concerned layperson

5 stars because I couldn't think of an improvement I'd want to make. It's well-written for the understanding of non-health-professionals (I'm one) and seemed like a very comprehensive (for the time, given that recognition of MCS is in its infancy) overview of what appears to be the tip of an iceberg. Rationally, I believe that multiple chemical sensitivity is real, but I don't personally know anyone who is involved, so I have no basis for bias. This book quoted several individuals who have symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivity, and their accounts of the desperate measures they must take to not feel rotten really opened my eyes to the possible future for the rest of us.

The doctors who were interviewed and quoted don't all agree on every aspect of the syndrome, which makes their opinions seem more authentic. Some of them have outright antipathy, not just disagreement, over specific points regarding MCS; however, it seemed to me that they all agree that the specialty of allergies (and MCS) is inexact, almost as much art as science. Some of the avant-garde treatments I read about seem fairly dubious, but the results are apparently well-documented. Although relatively few scientific studies have been done, they seemed appropriate and meaningful to me.

This book is neither anti-industry nor "chicken little" in tone, but it certainly added fuel to my back-to-basics, organic-gardening, anti-industry fire. The facts (some statistics) and opinions (from informed health professionals) presented herein constitute a firm, but rational, warning that we may have opened a chemical Pandora's box when we jumped on the industrial bandwagon. The rising incidence of many chronic diseases (cancer, asthma, ulcers, you name it) may be due only to the fact that those people didn't get felled first by typhoid, malaria, or saber-toothed tigers, but I'm still concerned, and I don't think the coincidence of higher cancer rates and widespread use of industrial chemicals is due to chance. This book doesn't spend many pages addressing solutions; it is aimed at illuminating the source of the problem. I'd recommend it, without reservation, to other laypersons who want to expand their understanding, especially to school kids doing research on industrial chemicals or allergies.

Emotional, but not factual

I have read several books about MCS and EI. This book if full of emotional ramblings rather than solid facts. If you are doing research, I would not consider this a good source. If you are looking for someone to feel your pain and share your anger at environmental illness, this book may comfort you. Understand that some of the things he says are not 100% true. If you want more factual information, try Dr. Doris Rapp or Dr. Sherry Rogers. Their books have citations linked to actual studies and court cases as well as helpful information on how to heal yourself.

Historians might puzzle over the claim that Granada was the "only vestige" of the Moorish invasion (Islam continued to be practiced widely in Spain until the early 16th century). Things fell apart for Christopher Columbus after 1492. At his nadir, he was manacled and returned to Spain for alleged misgovernment of Hispaniola, the colony he founded. This is the entry point for Dugard's chronicle of the explorer. Instead of the dungeon or worse, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella gave Columbus a new fleet and sanction to realize, once and for all, his ambition to blaze a westward route to China. Lasting from 1502 to 1504, this fourth and final voyage becomes, in Dugard's rendition, a vivid tally of adventure replete with maritime hazards, war with Indians, a shipwreck, a mutiny among the crew, and an astounding rescue mission. With apt details, Dugard re-creates the terrors and discomforts of the expedition, which coasted along Central America and ground to a halt in Jamaica. Instead of the ideological symbol he is viewed as today, Columbus emerges from Dugard's energetic narrative as totally human--imperfect and bent with arthritis yet still a charismatic mariner who will keep historians employed and readers reading. I gained an appreciation for Columbus that I did not have before reading this book. His name usually evoked contempt and anger over the treatment of the natives of the lands Columbus visited or attempted to settle. I had no idea he was treated so badly by many of the Spaniards. This historical account of his fourth voyage was plagued with just about every misfortune imaginable, from a Sailor's perspective. It was a year-long nightmare of tragic events.

I highly recommend the book. It's told using first-hand accounts using journal entries and other factual records.

Amazing Story...and sadly never told in history class?!!?!

Dugard is a fantastic writer. Although the beginning of the book begins slowly, the tale of the fourth voyage is one of the most thrilling adventures I ever read. The fact that this was a true story and not fiction makes the reader hold onto their armchair as Dugard's narrative reads beautifully and steers the reader along, and it does so as masterfully as the great Columbus himself, who tenaciously led his frightened men to the New World. And despite Columbus' later misfortunes during this fourth voyage, he was an extremely clever man with outstanding resolve that although never found that elusive passage to Asia did manage to return home safely after a nerve-racking series of disasters. That is astounding by any mortal's standards.

I was glad to see that the History Channel made a movie on Dugard's book, as it is a crucial piece of history and an amazing story. Despite Columbus' failed mission he led his crew through, while even being deathly sick, to finally being rescued. That so many men did follow him, regardless of the mutiny, which was understandable at that crisis, it seems the main issue many others and I have is about Columbus being a tyrant. This whole issue truly needs factual evidence to prove that it was Columbus rather than his officers who committed those gross misdeeds on Hispaniola that tarnished Columbus' name, honor and right to govern.

In comparison to King Ferdinand's Spain, which was entering its most ugly period of pogroms by first expelling the Muslims and currently on a mission to begin the Inquisition, Columbus appears to have been an angel. If harsh punishments were meted out on Hispaniola, it seems the evil King Ferdinand, who was killing people in mass, was no one to reprimand Columbus or his men for harsh treatment. Many factors indicate that the King's aim was to demote Columbus and his monopoly on the New World, which he and his evil bishop, Fonseca, managed to do. They were ruthlessly expelling Muslims and Jews, and Columbus was just another expendable victim added to the list. Hence, this vital information needs to be finally resolved by ALL historians writing about Columbus.

However, this book is titled "The Last Voyage of Columbus", so I can't criticize Dugard too much in this regard, yet his storyline does address this previous issue, and therefore should to some extent. But as for the tantalizing fourth voyage, this is nothing short of extraordinary and almost too unreal to believe.

This was a fascinating tale, written in a fascinating and engaging style. Bravo Dugard! And thanks for bequeathing to the world this great and important tale. A MUST READ!

Good info, but not a favorite book

This book is full of interesting facts, good illustrations but seems either too long with the additional stories of a few knights or too short because it touches on a few King Arthur knights but not all, seems to leave ya wanting more out of the book. It is more for kids that can read for themselves. I skip this book for bedtime stories as it is pretty dry and my son wants to read something else.

Some images will be familiar from the entertainment world; others will strike one more directly: faces we see each day, down the street, down the hall, or right next to us. In his rhythmical and joyful introduction, Carlos Fuentes admonishes us, "All together now, keep your eyes open beyond yourselves, see the margins of the world, where those who are different from us are waiting to demonstrate that they are as human as we." If that bridge into the twenty-first century that politicians enjoy talking about is going to be successfully and intelligently crossed, it would bode well to recognize how important it is for all of us to join in the journey. Beautiful Tapestry of Latino Life in the United States

As the largest growing ethnic group in the United States, Latinos/Hispanics have made inroads in many fields due to their strength, organization, and family values. Although differences among Latinos are as common as differences in other groups distinguished by a common language root (e.g., Slavs, Arabs, Romance languages speakers, etc.) the common struggle of all nationalities that are found in this classification is the same: success.
Edited by one of the greatest activists and advocates for Latinos all around the world, actor Edward James Olmos, "Americanos: Latino Life in the United States" is a collection of beautiful photographs and stories of Latinos throughout the United States. From Mexican-Americans in California to Puerto Ricans in New York City, Olmos and a team of other editors have produced a book that perfectly and respectfully captures the beauty and realities of Latinos all around. Available in hardbound and paperback editions, "Americanos: Latino Life in the United States" is a must have for Latino/Hispanic Studies students/enthuasists or for anyone who tuly appreciates cultural photography. The book, which was accompanied by a U.S. museum tour of photographs featured in the book, is truly a milestone for a community that has risen from a long sleep and awakened to become the most dynamic and promising group in the Americas.
If I can use two words to describe this book, I would use "moving" and "beautiful." It's a must have book in your library, especially if you're Latino.

Working on "Americanos" was a true labor of love.

Having worked with Olmos, Ybarra, and Monterrey and the 29 other photographers like myself was a true labor of love. I am one of the photographers of the Americanos Project. I feel we uncovered a treasure of diversity with in the Latino culture living in the United States. Now this labor of love is available for all to see, study and enjoy. This book is as colorful as the culture itself.

A not to be missed work!

I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Olmos talk in person about the making of "Americanos" and now have the pleasure of enjoying the book again and again. The photos are hauntingly charming, poignant and vital and I can guarantee they will stay in your heart and mind long after you put the book down.
What "Americanos" has to say about Latinos is so vitally important. Olmos, in his preface, says "...Too often, only one culture of Latino culture is apparent. That is the culture that we see from our car windows, on newscasts, in restaurants and from stadium seats..." "Americanos", however gives us an insider's view, a look into the very heart and soul of our Latino brothers and sisters and reveals a people, in Olmos's words, "...who are diverse in culture, color, ideas and dreams..."
