Great resource on effects and pharmacology of meds for children

I actually attended a workshop given by Gadow and found it to be very informative for not only professionals, but lay people as well. I have used the book with teachers and parents to explain the effects of medication (mostly for ADHD) on their children. It also lists the half-lives (how long the meds stay in the system) of many drugs used for ADHD, which is of primary concern to many people. Great research done on the success rates as well.

About the Author

Andrew M. Greeley (1928-2013) was a Catholic priest, best-selling novelist, and sociologist. He was professor of social science at the University of Chicago and member of its National Opinion Research Center (NORC). His books include Faithful Attraction, The Denominational Society, Unsecular Man, Death and Beyond, and The Church and the Suburbs.

Supremely disappointing

I had read Fr. Greeley's book about the 1978 conclaves and enjoyed it immensely. I hadn't thought to look for this one until very recently, but was happy to find it. Unfortunately, this book is not what it claims to be. As other have noted, most of the writing is about the problems of the Church and how Fr. Greeley thinks they should be solved. Even the reporting on the conclave, thin though it is, was peppered with personal observations on what the Church should do and what the next pope needs to be.

If you followed the news reports at the time, you won't learn anything new from this book. Gone are the accounts of the back-alley deals, the dinnertime whispers, the private campaigning and the political maneuvering of a conclave. Instead, there is a cursory mention of what the Italian press was reporting, sort of sprinkled in among the diatribe. Benedict's full homily from his investiture is reprinted as well, I assume to fill space. Fr. Greeley repeats himself again and again, often verbatim.

So, I was disappointed. If you're looking for the sequel to the 1978 book, don't buy this. If you want to know how Fr. Greeley would run the Church, this is right up your alley.

Disappointing Pope

I really liked the late, lamented Father Greeley's work on the conclave of 1978-THE MAKING OF THE POPLE 1978. It is a wonderful book detailing as best an outsider could, the events that led up to first the election of John Paul I then that of John Paul II. So, naturally, I was excited to discover-somewhat late I realize-that he had written a similar book on the election of Benedict XVI. Though enjoyable, as always-Father Greeley can almost never write a dull book- I did not find it to have near the depth of the 1978 book or contain near the understanding of what happened in 2005 compared to what happened in 1978. His dislike of Joseph Ratzinger-eventually Benedict XVI - is obvious from the beginning. It was odd that I discovered this book and started reading it about the time Benedict decided to retire. Father Greeley was, I assume, in too poor health to attend the conclave that elected Pope Francis. How he would have enjoyed that.
Greeley's very recent death precluded me writing a letter of appreciation for all his life's work.

Mean Spirited

Mean spirited...well written but mean spirited. I knew before this that Ft Greeley disliked then Bishop Raztzinger-a great deal. This book, while well written loses so much of what is interesting when it goes off on rants about then man who became Pope. If not for those parts it would have been an excellent book.
If you are not Roman Catholic, this is not a good book for you. It is very "insider" and there are many books far better for a non-Catholic to read about how a Pope is elected.

The perfect book on the topic

Never have I read a better book on the topic. J.C. covers it exactly how it was. Today is so different - spam mail and myspace and RSS feeds, etc...

This book gets my nostalgic every time I pick it up and read it. Yes, that first review was me, "PunkaPixie" almost 10 years ago. I just had to write another review (don't know if its allowed), but THIS BOOK DESERVES TO HAVE ANOTHER FIVE STAR REVIEW!!!!! Why oh why is it being shunned to the bargain bin!?!?! LONG LIVE THIS BOOK! And bless the heart of Ms. J.C. Herz who one day, long ago, back when I wrote this review, had written me an e-mail which is buried somewhere in a text file. Wherever she may be, I wish her well!

Long live the days of IRC and usenet... oh how I miss it so.

I am staring at my copy of this book right now actually. Still proudly displayed in my bookcase. This book has always and will always be close to my heart. At 25 years of age now, I will never forget the good old days when the internet was a wee baby - long before it was tainted with the things that "could be".

This is a great book for anyone curious to know what life was like before the "mass influx" of people on the 'Net. And an even better companion for those who long to remember.

Oh my gosh, when i found this book in the "new book" section over 2 years ago at my library I thought it was cool fer the cover.
Then I read it.. oh my GOSH never ever have I ever read a book I agreed with SOOOO MUCH. The whole time I was reading about the little net adventures of J.C. Herz, I was smiling because I too have done it.. the usenet postings, the late night IRC excursions as well as the inevitable dip into MUD.
This book is great for anyone of the "olden" days of the online world. And for those vets.. feast yur eyes on the MindVox section.

Armed only with a 12-page letter written by her mother, she retraced family footsteps from the provincial town of Brtnice to Vienna, where her great-grandmother Josephine had killed herself in despair. In Prague, her spirited grandmother Pepi, who had been orphaned at age 8 and left in poverty, rose from those ashes to run a fashionable dressmaking salon. Pepi married a man who repudiated Judaism so completely that their daughter Frances learned of her background only as the Nazis rose to power. With this family history, Epstein (Children of the Holocaust, 1979, etc.) adds a vivid and telling chapter to the reconstruction of Jewish women's history, one life at a time. While she can't recover all the details of her great- grandmother Therese's, grandmother Pepi's, and mother Franci's lives in Czechoslovakia, she more than compensates by re-creating the times, the milieus, and the circumstances in which they found themselves. The settings range from the Bohemian town of Brtnice, to the Belle Epoque Vienna of assimilated Jews such as Freud, Mahler, and Herzl, where Therese committed suicide after her oldest son's death from peritonitis, to newly independent and cosmopolitan Prague in the 1920s, where Pepi ran a fashion salon in which wealthy women gathered to gossip, exchange intimacies, and catch up on the latest Paris fashions, and ultimately to Auschwitz, Bergen- Belsen, and finally New York. Focusing in particular on the social roles of women, Epstein presents Pepi's salon as ``a rare institution that allowed a woman to acquire expertise and authority . . . a feminine realm, where women could speak.'' For Pepi and for Franci, who took over the business at the age of 18, it also provided a solid income and a refuge from harsh realities: marital unhappiness, the advent of Hitler, impending war. All three, Therese, Pepi, and Franci, were strong, capable women who faced great adversity, from poverty to the loss of loved ones to war and near-extermination. Other remarkable women figure in Epstein's tale: sternly pious Aunt Rosa, who raised the orphaned Pepi and lived to regret marrying her off to a man who turned out to be syphilitic (he did at least refrain from consummating their union); a friend of Franci's who worked for the Czech resistance during WW II. There is much more in this real-life family saga, about Czech history, and relations between men and women, Czechs and Jews, rich and poor. Every daughter should read this book

We read Helen Epstein's "Where She Came From" for our book group, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The book has so many threads: Wonderful characters you wish you could meet in person; A view of the history of eastern Europe that is colorful and compelling; The chilling face of centuries of European anti-Semitism; Helen's personal story of discovery. It reads like a mystery at times and a love letter at others. The writing style is very clear and pleasant to read - the best of personal journalism. Having read the library's copy, I bought one of my own to share with my own family and friends.

One of the best books ever on the Holocaust period

Epstein achieves her goal of exploring her roots, but she accomplishes much more. She paints a fascinating, and very well researched portrait of life in Eastern Europe during the two generations before and during the Holocaust. The lives and times come alive for the reader. Most Holocaust literature focuses on the horrors of the period. Epstein concentrates on the people and their culture, and how the Holocaust effected the lives of her ancestors. It is a must read for anyone interested in this very challenging time in our history.

Fascinating, haunting and very human

I was going to go to Prague (didn't make it, but that's another story) and a friend said to me, "I read this book *after* I went and I wish I'd read it *before*."
Well, as I said I didn't go to Prague, but I did read the book. It sucked me in and held me all the way through.
I not generally generally wild about literature that focuses on the Holocaust. But this book is really a lot more than that. It's part history, part detective story, part memoir. I found it gripping, engaging and moving.

But the late Sister Parish and her partner Albert Hadley certainly fell into that category. Their impact both inside and outside the profession of decorating has been subtly powerful; their use of glazed chintzes, bright colors, handcrafts from patchwork quilts to rag rugs, comfortable upholstery, and other touches has influenced many of the country and casual trends today. Chronicled here are the lives and experiences of the two principals and their design philosophy. More important, though, are the approximately 150 color photographs, examples of their work and testimonials to their style. Too Important to Be Out of Print

I borrowed this remarkable book from the library, and it's a treasure. Many years ago Sister Parrish, the chintz-loving society decorator who helped Jackie redo the White House, teamed up with Albert Hadley, a polite genius of timeless, clean design and proportion.

The result of this union of opposites was a partnership made in decorating heaven. In fact, the "marriage" produced wonderful offspring: Marriette Himes Gomez and Mark Hampton both got their start here.

If you'd like to see how many of the top American names of the 20th century lived, Jackie, Nelson Rockefeller, Babe Paley, it's all here. And if you'd like in depth exposure to the design principles of two American masters, you couldn't ask for a better source.

What a shame this out of print book costs $250. If it were $50 I'd buy it in a one-click minute. Attention book publishers, you need to reissue this book for the design-starving masses.

Brilliant book for the serious student of interior design!

A beautiful book, certainly more valuable than a mere 'coffee table' book. If one is serious about interior design, seeing and understanding what these amazing people did to the art is imperative. The photographs show rooms that will stand the test of time and make you salivate over the treasures. What an incredible legacy they have, american design owes them beyond measure.

A Tribute to One of America's Best Design Firms

Pulled from the archives of the legendary interior design firm, PARISH HADLEY, SIXTY YEARS OF AMERICAN DESIGN was published in 1995, the year after Sister Parish's death at age 84 -- or 91, depending. Unfortunately, failing health apparently prevented her active participation in the book but previous interviews and recordings, along with anecdotes from employees, provided information. Of course, long-time business partner Albert Hadley, still in practice now on his own at age 87, was able to help make a fitting tribute to the firm, one of the country's finest in its heyday. Sadly, Parish-Hadley is now defunct, ruined by the last associates before the Millenium.

Although no photographs were done expressley for the book, the projects that did have a shot or two are interesting studies. After the first section on Parish and Hadley, the second part shows examples of rooms in the categories of Arrivals, Living Rooms, Dining Rooms, Libraries, Bedrooms, and Garden Rooms. The third part tells the story of the decoration of the family rooms of the Kennedy White House, complete with documentary photos. And the fourth part shows multiple homes of various clients, most famous, all rich.

In the sixty years, undoubtedly there were many incredible projects that were not photographed for reasons of privacy and it is a shame for the readers and for the sake of a record that not even a mention is made of these. Evidently either Parish or Hadley at least supervised the projects pictured here. However, the strong back-up of talented assistant decorators, such as Bunny Williams, Kevin McNamara, David Easton, Brian McCarthy and David Kleinberg, who later went on to successful careers on their own, are only minimally mentioned if at all. And nothing is mentioned of the in-staff architects, Michael Shell, David McMahon, Paul Engel, John Tackett and Mark Ferguson among others, under the direction of vice-president Harold Simmons, who provided the magnificent "bones" of so many of the projects in the zenith years of the firm; all left before the downfall to start successful practices of their own. A listing of projects with their locations and dates would have been interesting, as would have been a write-up on the talent that trained at the firm. And strangely, there are none of the famous Albert Hadley sketches or renderings of any kind.

Although flawed and much less than it could have/should have been, this book is none-the-less an excellent reference for all interested in traditional residential design. Without a doubt, a MUST HAVE for all decorating libraries.
