Really quite good.
By A Customer
It is not necessary to write much about this because there is a danger I may write more than all the text in the book. Simon Marsden has put together a photographer's exhibition of a book and added small amounts of text that deal with the ghostly histories of some European countries. The photographs are magnificent and the stories related to them add brilliantly to the effect. The book is an atmospheric journey through a lens, a little voice talking to you as you go. I would have given it the whole 5 stars but for the fact that Marsden tells on many occassions that he felt "an evil in the room and had to get out" but he does not explain that he is a medium or that the room was overpoweringly creepy. His writing at such times is a bit convenient and thus annoying. But don't let that stop you, this is a good addition to any ghostly collection

Simon Marsden captured parallel portals opened at just the right time
By Sydney Squidney
Being a lifelong taphophile, i've spent a lot of my free time in cemeteries. Wandering down worn cemetery paths, admiring cemetery architecture, exploring about graves and tombs, stopping at every headstone which had a story to tell, and so naturally, i've always had a romantic fascination with cemetery photography. I've flipped through my fair share of cemetery books, many with artful, introspective and intimate black and white photographs quite beautiful in their own right, but never have I been so enchanted by a cemetery photography book as I was with Journal of a Ghost Hunter.

Simon Marsden's photographic work is absolutely incomparable to anything else I have ever seen, and not just when it comes to photographs that truly capture beauteous melancholy of ancient gravesites and forgotten funerary grounds, but also in capturing the transcendental nature of the supernatural domain.

In most cemeteries there's a tranquil sense of being merely a guest among a city of the resting, a setting of peaceful reflection, but with Marsden's Journal of a Ghost Hunter: In Search of the Undead from Ireland to Transylvania comes undeniable corporeal impressions of being in another dimension, among the mystical spirit world, in that obscure world of dreams. It's very much that he has captured those parallel portals opened at just the right time in all of these moonlit graveyards and mysterious ruins and you feel that realisation through his haunting photographs.

The sensation in fact, is that you could just leave your reverie behind and simply step right into and become part of that eerie, romantic atmosphere if you were so inspired, and you just may be.

Marsden's unusual artistry of using infrared film enforcing his masterful style of photography helps capture beautifully escapsulated images of forgotten tombs, abandoned ruins and eidolic landscapes from his year-long traverse across Southern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany and Romania in their most ethereal, eternal form.

Accompanying his atmospheric images is his own keen prose along with lore and documentation relating to the sites. I was sad to hear of Sir Simon Marsden's passing earlier this year in January and though this volume is no longer produced, I wanted to do my part to introduce his work to others who would appreciate the poetic insight Journal has to offer.

Marsden once said that he wanted to inspire people to not take everything around them at face value, and with this collection you understand why - the languages of ancient landscapes and the spirits of ruins are reflected here and truly the stuff to inspire ethereal poetry and esoteric philosophy. If you have had just about enough of introspection from typical cemetery books, I implore you to take a serious look at this profound collection of historic burial sites presented in an atmosphere unequalled and not seen anywhere else, you don't just see it, you crawl into it, you're pulled into it.

Here is where you leave the earth that ebbs behind and learn about the dreams which bridge to that which has been opened, but hardly seen.

An enjoyable if imperfect Star Trek compendium
By B.C. Scribe
I received this book as a Christmas gift from my parents in 1995, the year it was first released. I was quite happy to get it too - I have read it cover to cover no less than five times. Being a huge fan of the series (all of them!) I have found the book quite diverting. As mentioned in the other reviews here the book contains synopses of all of the episodes of both the classic original series and its successor 'The Next Generation'. The movies are covered here as well right up to the first big screen appearance of the TNG crew in 'Star Trek: Generations'. The information is as accurate as one could expect this type of 'prattle' to be; this is not a knock on the book but rather a valid point as I will explain later on.

The few reviews that appear here may or may not be a testament to "Captains' Logs" popularity among fans of the TV and/or movie series. Most of the Star Trek books, collectibles & memorabilia have their staunch defenders - no matter how 'cheesy' the item(s) might be. Perhaps the answer to the reluctance of fans to come to the defense of this book can be answered right here on this webpage. As one of the reviewers here summarized, what the book constitutes is no more than a glorified fanzine. And honestly, I could understand someone being disappointed with the contents of the book. If you had regularly read the publications or subscribed to 'Starlog' and 'The Next Generation' magazines, then you've definitely been exposed to most of the information here. It may not be firsthand information but having it all gathered here in one compendium sure makes it indispensable. Besides that the episode guides are handy and the background info on the TNG episodes is especially entertaining. But I thought the best parts of the book are the sections on the short-lived Saturday morning animated series and the busted television revival series. The animated series was much maligned during its two season run (the fall of both 1973 and 1974) and quickly forgotten. I was glad to have the history and genesis of this program; I always felt that these episodes provided a way to do things that couldn't be done on the live action series due to budget constraints. It's also interesting to note the fact that some of the episodes written for the busted TV revival series showed up on 'The Next Generation' in one form or another. One of the other episodes written about here for that same never-was TV series sounds remarkably similar to a 'Star Trek: Voyager' episode.

Now I want to explain what I meant when I used the word 'prattle'. Much of the information following the single episode synopses are really no more than 'sound bites' from the actors or production staff seemingly given at the time of production. While a good portion of the book is based on research many of the statements attributed here are transcribed from audio tapes of interviews that the authors conducted over a ten year period. That's not to say many articles that were previously published carried much of the same information. And seeing it here again would be considered a weakness by fans who regularly read the magazines I mentioned before. But I think we can all agree that we (the fans of Star Trek) can appreciate having this volume in our libraries. There are other books available dealing with each of the series on an individual basis and they are great in their own right. But the authors were right to conceive of this project and to try to demonstrate the continuity of the Star Trek universe. How well they succeeded is up to each individual's interpretation.

The main drawback to the book I thought was the proliferation of photos used throughout. The choices of some still photos that accompany the episode synopsis of some stories just boggle the mind - if you've seen the book you know what I mean. Some of them have no reason to be here at all, some have no discernible significance whatsoever. They're just from the surplus of publicity photos that seems inexhaustible in Hollywood. I do however value the reproductions and stills of many of the Star Trek inspired magazine covers that appear mainly towards the end of the book. Some of the featured covers are from popular juvenile publications like 'Cracked' and 'MAD' magazine; others are from more traditional pop culture magazines like 'TV Guide' and 'Entertainment Weekly'; and yet still others from the internationally respectable 'TIME' and 'LIFE'.

An update is inevitable - and in fact there is a publication available titled "Captains' Logs Supplemental" by the same authors. I haven't yet read the book and I don't know how much of the later 'Deep Space Nine' and 'Voyager' series are covered, but I'll still be curious enough to get a look at it when the opportunity arises. I do beg the authors to do one thing though before going to publication once again: please, please, please get someone to copyedit your manuscript!

A required addition for the die-hard Trekker
By Jim Carson
Captain's Logs contains *very* detailed on some of the internal politics and strife during TOS (the original series) and TNG (Star Trek: The Next Generation), and several of the movies. (Because of the timing involved, there's not very much about DS9 or Voyager. This is covered in the supplemental volume.)
All of the episodes in TOS and TNG have a summary and most (>95%) have some behind-the-scenes arcana. There is surprisingly little "[actor] was also in [other feature]" type stuff, but rather juicier background on all of the writing and directorial changes.
While the honesty in stating "Star Trek 1 was terrible" is refreshing, it seems like the authors dwell more on the "problem" aspects of the show. For example, in discussing the episode "City on the Edge of Forever," the authors spend a much longer amount of time on the Harlon Ellison saga (Ellison writes the story, it gets butchered into an episode, both win awards, Roddenbery and Ellison at odds over credit).
The result is a less-than-flattering portrayal of Gene Roddenbery. (To be fair, I came away a greater awareness of and respect for Gene Coon and Rick Berman.)
Overall, a worthy read for the die-hardest Trekker.

Must Have for Trekkies
By Conrad Hoss
A shame this came out before Amazon was around- this was- and is- a mainstay in my Star Trek collection. Is loaded with production quotes about every episode (up to 1995). Still better than Wiki.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Middle Grade Book of the Month, July 2012: A bit like a porcine Amelia Bedelia, Nanny Piggins’ literal interpretations and take-charge attitude inevitably lead to wacky but well-meaning outcomes. For the Green children, their father’s disinterest in them is matched only by the love and attention they receive from Nanny, and her delight in taking Mr. Green to task on behalf of the rest of the family. It is not surprising, then, to learn that the wicked plan referred to in the title, Nanny Piggins and the Wicked Plan, is Mr. Green’s quest to find a new wife and send Nanny Piggins back to her former career as a famous flying pig. Adventure (Nanny Piggins returns to the cannon to defend her title), heart, and even a little math, accompany many chocolate cakes (Nanny’s remedy for everything) in this welcome second book from R.A. Spratt.--Seira Wilson

Review
Praise for Nanny Piggins and the Wicked Plan:
* "If Amelia Bedelia and Mary Poppins raised a piglet, Nanny Piggins ... could surely beat that pig in a cake-eating contest...Australia's favorite porcine childcare worker returns in a new collection of adventures sure to entertain and possibly inspire envy in readers who'll wish she were their nanny...Feisty, funny Nanny Piggins and her adoring charges will charm readers and listeners stateside, who'll be overjoyed there are five additional volumes already out Down Under."―Kirkus (starred review)

Rags & Bones: New Twists on Timeless TalesFrom Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

The best writers of our generation retell classic tales.

From Sir Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene to E. M. Forster's "The Machine Stops," literature is filled with sexy, deadly, and downright twisted tales. In this collection, award-winning and bestselling authors reimagine their favorite classic stories, the ones that have inspired, awed, and enraged them, the ones that have become ingrained in modern culture, and the ones that have been too long overlooked. They take these stories and boil them down to their bones, and reassemble them for a new generation of readers.

Written from a twenty-first century perspective and set within the realms of science fiction, dystopian fiction, fantasy, and realistic fiction, these short stories are as moving and thought provoking as their originators. They pay homage to groundbreaking literary achievements of the past while celebrating each author's unique perception and innovative style.

Today's most acclaimed authors use their own unique styles to rebuild the twelve timeless stories:

Sir Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene - Saladin Ahmed

W. W. Jacobs's "The Monkey's Paw" - Kelley Armstrong

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla" - Holly Black

"Sleeping Beauty" - Neil Gaiman

The Brothers Grimm's "Rumpelstiltskin" - Kami Garcia

Kate Chopin's The Awakening - Melissa Marr

Rudyard Kipling's "The Man Who Would Be King" - Garth Nix

Henry James's "The Jolly Corner" - Tim Pratt

E. M. Forster's "The Machine Stops" - Carrie Ryan

Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto - Margaret Stohl

William Seabrook's "The Caged White Werewolf of the Saraban" - Gene Wolfe

Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Birth-Mark" - Rick Yancey

And six illustrations by Charles Vess

From Booklist
Editors Marr and Pratt asked 10 other writers to join them in creating short stories based on classics that had influenced their writing. With a stellar cast of popular and critically acclaimed authors (besides Marr and Pratt, there’s Neil Gaiman, Holly Black, Rick Yancey, and more) and a wide variety of styles and settings, there’s something here for every reader of science fiction and fantasy. Inspirations range from classics (Kate Chopin’s The Awakening) to fairy tales (Sleeping Beauty) to gothic thrillers (Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s “Carmilla”). Vess provides six delicately evocative illustrations based on fantasy classics. Fans of dystopian fiction will enjoy the many stories exploring a postapocalyptic future, and hopefully will seek out lesser-known works such as E. M. Forster’s “The Machine Stops,” inspiration for Carrie Ryan’s contribution. Of particular interest is Saladin Ahmed’s take on Sir Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene, which shows us another side of the villainous Muslim Saracen brothers. With such diversity of styles and topics, it’s likely that not every story will please every reader, but it’s great fun sampling and discovering new authors and titles to explore. An amazing collection of retellings with wonderful twists on some amazing classics
By Dark Faerie Tales
Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales.

Quick & Dirty: An amazing collection of retellings with wonderful twists on some amazing classics.

Opening Sentence: It isn’t until he’s nearing the bottom of the ladder that Tavil realizes his sister hasn’t followed him.

The Review:

Rag and Bones, edited by Melissa Marr and Tim Pratt, is an amazing collection of retellings. Twelve authors have given the reader a glimpse into who they are, by retelling a significant classic. Authors such as Carrie Ryan, Garth Nix, Neil Gaiman, Tim Pratt, Holly Black, Rick Yancey, Margaret Stohl, Melissa Marr, Kelley Armstrong, Kami Garcia, Saladin Ahmed, and Gene Wolfe are some of the famous YA authors to date. Together, they have created this newly reinvented collection of classics and I couldn’t wait to dig in.

One thing about retellings is just that. It’s a tale retold. With classics, such as fairy tales, it must be hard to reimagine or reinvent and tell it in a way that grasps new and old readers. For me, I enjoyed reliving these tales from my childhood in a new and different way. Whether it be through new age technology, a strong heroine instead of a charming prince, or even deathly vampires, I enjoyed it all.

There really is nothing like a twisted collection of fairy tales to get you ready for the fall season. Everyone needs to read this, because every story is wonderful. Let me tell you about a few of my favorites.

That the Machine May Progress Eternally – Carrie Ryan

The original, E.M. Forster’s The Machine Stops, talks about how technology overrules our lives. It was written in 1909, predating much of what we know today. In Carrie Ryan’s version, she takes it a step further, fueling fears of those who do not wish to disconnect, and paints a picture of gruesome measures. Tavil is trapped in a world where humanity is reduced to life, automated. I love how Ryan drew out the symbolisms of faith and worship. And without any sort of activity beyond the machine, humans are trapped in a machine in a world “perfectly wrought.”

Losing Her Divinity – Garth Nix

Rudyard Kipling’s “The Man Who Would Be King” is about two travelers who become kings of a remote part of Afghanistan. Nix’s version is much more personal, in my opinion. He changes the narration/voice of the story, bringing it to a first person narrative. I found it to be more enjoyable, like an old friend telling me a tale of travel. There were a few parts that I glanced over, but overall I enjoyed it.

The Sleeper and the Spindle – Neil Gaiman

Everyone knows Sleeping Beauty; the lost princess who struck her finger upon a spindle and caused a whole kingdom to slumber. Neil Gaiman has beautifully retold this story unlike I’ve read before. I won’t spoil the twist, but let me just say that there is an amazing crossover that surprised me. It was easy to get lost in this new version, and every part of my being wished there was more to the story.

The Cold Corner – Tim Pratt

I haven’t read The Jolly Corner since college, so I couldn’t exactly tell you the similarities and differences. I will say that I enjoyed The Cold Corner. This had a very interesting Twilight Zone theme, and it was enjoyable. There are many contemporary, present day, pop culture-esque qualities incorporated and it made it that much more enjoyable.

Millcara – Holly Black

This was an amazing retelling. The original tale, Carmilla, was about a tale of two young girls and their budding friendship. In reality, that friendship was about a vampire’s advances of that young girl. In Black’s version, Millcara, she wrote it from the eyes of the vampire. To hear inside the mind of a vampire has become more engaging than I can express. Black knows just how to lure a reader in, and she has definitely done so with Millcara.

When First We Were Gods – Rick Yancey

Rick Yancey is a very talented author. He has managed to take a classic like Hawthorne’s The Birth Mark and translate it into the present century with When First We Were Gods. Immortality is something that has always been coveted, especially to the rich and wealthy. Yancey’s main character, Beneficent Page (fitting name, right?) covets immortality. It is attainable for the elite and can be purchased on credit. To me, it was like seeing the differences of the “upstairs” and “downstairs” for the technology age. So many topics weaved into this story, and Yancey knows how to make it all interesting.

Sirocco – Margaret Stohl

It’s interesting the point of view that Margaret Stohl has taken for The Castle of Otranto. I always remembered this story as one of darkness and goth. Stohl’s version, Sirocco, has brought a lighter tone to the story. Stohl’s version brings the limelight of Hollywood to the castle. Tolerance plays a huge theme, playing on the stereotypes of famous actors.

Awakened – Melissa Marr

I have never read The Awakening, but I enjoyed Marr’s story. The sea has always been a symbol of eternity; eternal death or eternal life. In this case, Marr showcases a woman trapped, only to enter the sea for freedom. Selchies are normal sexy and seductive, but I found Marr’s main character to be full of melancholy. It was an emotional read, but that is a testament to Marr’s writing.

The Soul Collector – Kami Garcia

Kami Garcia tells a tail of a young girl who ended up in the wrong side of the streets. Slowly, we see where the girl came from, who she is, and who she will become. A man who appeared to help her was a collector. He didn’t steal anything, but instead the helpless souls offered themselves to them. As for the young girl? She was gladly given by someone near and dear to her.

Well written, well presented, a gorgeous anthology.
By @Julia_ATUF
Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

RAGS & BONES is a gorgeously curated collection of short stories, as satisfying for the glimpses of each story's origin story as the final product. Have you ever wished you could be a fly on the wall when your favorite author pitches an idea? See a little piece of art through their creative lens? As favorite authors distill classic tales to their essence, this anthology was immersive and thought provoking, a masters class in the creative process with an all star attendance list.

Many of the inspirations for these stories were unfamiliar, but that proved as intriguing as the stories themselves. Each author included a short note, offering a connection to the source material through their eyes. Updating classic sources with a new perspective and a fresh voice, I found myself enjoying the narrative, contemplating the moral complexities faced by characters, and then mentally retracing how the author's original experience with a story gave birth to a new perspective. I find myself unable to pick a favorite, these stories are one delight after another. Neil Gaiman's badass Snow White begs for future adventures, and even the stories without a happy ending leave me haunted and daydreaming. Saladin Ahmed's heartbreaking brothers, Kami Garcia's damaged cop or Carrie Ryan's hapless, hopeless traveler are all so gorgeous, this collection contains so many hits and very few misses.

The narrative style of RAGS & BONES serves as a self contained book club, offering both the pleasure of well written stories and the connective sinew of the author's own experiences. With these gorgeous illustrations and thought provoking, clever stories, I find myself simultaneously clutching my copy and wishing I could share it with every reader in my life. Maybe I'll give them their own copy one day, but I can't bear to part with mine yet.

Sexual Content: Non-explicit references to sex and rape.

Well written, but hardly complete
By Brandon D. Lusk
When I pre-ordered this item, as a Kreon collector I admit it was mostly for the Orion Pax figure, which is wonderful. But the book itself is hardly complete featuring most of the releases from 2011-2013. I was hoping based on the release date that this would include everything up to and including the Kreon toys for the upcoming 4th Transformers film (Age of Extinction). But no such luck. I guess they will save that for a possible 2nd volume in a couple of years (2016?) If the line survives that long. But the book promises "you'll find your favorite characters, and discover new ones". Unfortunately this was not the case. There was nothing in this book I hadn't already known about. In fact some characters that were missing were -The Yellow & Orange variants of Devastator. While Vehicons and Autobot Troopers are covered, there is only a picture of one of them (should have been 3 unique figures each). -Convention exclusives such as Optimus Prime w/Matrix, Energon Bumblebee, & the Machine Wars 5 pack are not covered. Also in considering the development of a book takes time, perhaps the toys for AoE had not gotten passed the R&D stage when this book was being written, but I would think that the author would at least have access from Hasbro to photo material for the Kreons from Micro-Combiners series 4, Customs series 2, and the 3rd wave of Micro-Combiners (while most of these did not hit retail shelves until 2014, some online sellers were offering them in 2013, so I would think they would be considered 2013 releases...). Despite the lack of completeness however, what it does cover is pretty thorough, and is nice to have along side my Kreon collection. I would not discourage hard-core Kreon collectors from purchasing it, but just waned to provide realistic expectations of what you'll get when you do.

Less than meets the eye...

A fun book for small children. The book contains silly descriptions of the characters and doesn't follow classic character traits of known transformers. I purchased this for my eight year old who found the characters descriptions to be disappointing. My son is glad there are checklist throughout the book but this is definitely not a reference guide. The Transformers has a rich story history and its disappointing that it wasn't included. Also the book lacks information regarding current kreo releases.

Best book ever!

Oh my gosh, lemme just tell ya this was the greatest thing I've ever bought on Amazon!
This book seriously has every Transformer Kreo that's ever came out and a cute little bio next to the Transformer.
And what makes it better is the checklist at the end of each chapter! Now I can keep track of all the Kreo's I'm missing!
And of course you get a cute little Orion Pax with it, something any Transformer fan wouldn't want to miss out on.
