Great teaching resource!

This is a nice sturdy book that my boys go back to right after we get dressed in the morning and repeat the words in Spanish and English (They are 2 and 3 1/2 years.)

It also is a great review and supplement to the Lessons on clothing in their Flip Flop Spanish Workbooks - they look at the pictures in this sweet little book when we listen to the Spanish CD that comes with the workbook.

A great series for early language acquisition

I have been using this entire series with my son since he was born, and he is now 14 months. He loves the pictures and turning the pages. The books use the format of one word per page and it gives both the English and Spanish form of the word. This is a great series for early language acquisition.

Firstrate Chess Book for Children

This is by far the best book I've seen to teach children chess. Like most children's books, it covers the moves of the pieces with algebraic notation.
However, the guts of the book is giving a child systematic experience with the pieces. It starts with the "Pawns Game." Only the pawns are set on the board and each player plays with the goal of getting one pawn through to the last rank. This is anything but a dumb experience. Games like Knights & pawn game follow until the child is using the whole board.

Perhaps the best book ever written on learning how to play chess. The first book to introduce the now famous "Pawn Game" used in classrooms around the world. Grandmaster William Lombardy wasn't the coach of Bobby Fischer for nothing. His explanation of en-passant is better than any other explanation I've read. Beautiful photos and a brilliant premise combined with Lombardy's uncluttered writing makes for a wonderful book that I am surprised has not been reprinted regularly over the years.

This is Shaw's second book of photography of the Vineyard. Her images are strong and colorful, though not always inventive. Excellent Photographer!

I am not from Martha's Vineyard nor have I ever been there; however, after discovering Alison Shaw's photograpy in other books, I knew I had to have this one. She does not disappoint. This is a wonderful book to peruse on gray days with feet up and tea in hand...or summer at the beach...or before retiring for the night. I would highly recommend it.

Javaka Steptoe is an artist, designer, and illustrator.
