Hilarious and made of awesome

The Homeroom Diaries is a hilarious story told in the form of a teens diary, complete with tons of awesome illustrations. It is hard for me to decide which I enjoyed more- the story through Margaret, or "Cuckoo" as she has everyone call her, entries or her pictures to go along with the entries. It was a close call, both were equally awesome and both totally hilarious. The Homeroom Diaries is told from Cuckoo's point of view, but because it is her diaries it is told in a kind of easily accessible stream of consciousness. I loved every page of this book, even the sad ones.

Cuckoo does not have it easy. She has had more than her fair share of crappy things happen to her, but still through it all she is holding it together remarkably. I know the counselors at her school don't think so, but I do. I admired the heck out of her. And I loved seeing her with her friends.

The illustrations added a fantastic level of humor to the story. I lost count of how many times I flat out laughed out loud while reading Homeroom Diaries. And these were not dainty little giggles or chuckles, they were full out laughs, where I had to re-read paragraphs just so I could laugh again.

Homeroom Diaries is not just funny pictures though, there is a kick ass story in there too.Cuckoo and her friends are trying to implement this "project happiness" idea of theirs throughout the story, and you get a behind the scenes look at their everyday life. And trust me, tons goes on with them. I loved getting to know each of her friends, and I especially loved the alternate endings that she made for them. Cuckoo hates endings, and she is constantly writing alternate endings for books and movies and people. I hope that means there is another book coming out, because I am not ready to say goodbye to Cuckoo and her BFFs!

Homeroom Diaries- Read it before you get detention!!

Reading "Homeroom Diaries" is like a breath of fresh air. While the concept of a book being written in diary form is quite popular, James Patterson ups the ante by creating a relatable character that you truly care about. Everyone has gone to school with someone like Cuckoo Clarke, but now you get to be inside her head as she gets the chance to "start over." The voice of Cuckoo sucks you in on page one and keeps you turning the page until the end.

Homeroom Diaries was such a delightful read! I was surprised by how dark the subject matter got, but it's done with humor and understanding. And the illustrations are great! Maggie, aka Cuckoo, was just released from a 10-day stay at the mental hospital. She had an emotional breakdown after her mother took off and never returned. Now, she's living with a neighbor and is determined (along with her rag-tag group of friends) to do something to make the world, or at least their school, a happier place. All the while, keeping a diary and keeping said diary away from the school counselor who thinks every emotional response is cause for concern.

I really enjoyed Homeroom Diaries. I had never read a graphic novel before, so this was really something different for me. It's not wholly a graphic novel, probably a bit less than half, but it still took some getting use to. I was distracted by the graphics in the beginning. My eyes kept darting back to them while I was reading the text, but after a few chapters I fell into a rhythm. It all kind of reminded me of Lizzie McGuire, with little cartoon Maggie's acting out the story, or depicting some funny extra from her mind.

As for the plot, Homeroom Diaries is, like I said earlier, dark but funny. Maggie is accepting of the fact that she was institutionalized, and is annoyed that now every time she's sad, her counselor wants to send her back. She is allowed to be sad! Especially since someone close to her dies and another someone attempts suicide! See, really dark. Oh, and a boy assaults her. She's not crazy! She's having appropriate emotional responses! But she doesn't let that get her down. Maggie and her friends are super determined to pull something together to join the cliques and make people happier. It does get a bit cheesy toward the end, but I liked it. A lot.

Homeroom Diaries was really good. The format was a bit hard for me to get into at first, but I ended up loving it. The comic bits add so much to the overall story! Although I have to say my favorite page was the faces of Johnny Depp. So random!

useful! no pretense, great photos!

I haven't gotten past the midway point in this book, that's how rich and useful the first half is. When it comes to decor books, I tend to look at all the pictures first, then backtrack to read ... That approach works well with this book too and I suggest you try it too. Boy, the photo captions reveal MUCH more than meets the eye! Bigtime!!! What I saw the first go-round was tons of exquisite color photos of living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, entryways, the works... On the second go-round, the rooms' beauty secrets were revealed in the tell-all photo captions.
Great no-pretense book that will captivate some readers. The rooms are lovely and splendid yet down to Earth. Minor note: It's written in British English ...British slang has been absent so far (thank heavens) ... It was probably edited out (double thank heavens) ... The cover image is blah but the rest of the book is dynamite.

I WAS JUST GOING TO LIST THIS BOOK

I opened the book up and exclaimed outloud!!!

It has the most unique ideas I have ever seen. There is no way I am letting go of this prize!

It seems to have the most unique ideas for little corners, small spaces and easy unusual touches I can do without using a hammer!

The ideas are pretty, easy and functional!!

beautiful inspiration for rustic/country spaces

After leaving NYC about four years ago, while making my way to my current home in the high desert plains there were a few places I called home for a short while. Each had its unique use of space and it was interesting to use old and new pieces to make each space my own. This book was a great resource to me to figure out ways of arranging, re-purposing, and making smart use of small spaces.

The book is mostly geared to rustic and country style looks and to me, has a decidedly British feel to it. The things she uses to decorate with are straight out of Grandma's attic for the most part with some modern touches thrown in for balanced living and an eclectic look. Yard sales and junque shops have turned up many items inspired by the photos in this book and for *very* little cost.

These looks and ideas are totally "do-able" and now that I'm settled in my home I love going back to this book as a reference every so often to put some things away, take some things back out, and bring in a few new things to create a whole new look in an afternoon with one of the chapters as inspiration.

Ms. Gilliatt has over forty decorating and architecture books to her credit but this little gem happens to be my favorite. Highly recommended.

I appreciated the effort to tell this story, but ...

I appreciated the effort to tell this story, but found the characters unbelievable, the timeline discordant, and the ending contrived. It is a book that I would give a three rating for adult readers (the thought process of an adult is very apparent) and a one rating for the target audience. That should be a two rating, but kiddos rule. Sorry.

A Good Read

I purchased this for my 9-year-old daughter (who reads on a middle school level), and wound up reading it myself first. The author does a great job handling the subject, and I loved the varied backgrounds of the central characters. My daughter said the main character wasn't her favorite, and yet this is still one of the books she has re-read numerous times, so she clearly enjoyed the story in it. I'd definitely recommend this book to others.

Tedious to read.

I, too, appreciated the effort to tell this story. But the characters were not believable, foolish even. My son kept saying to me, "There is no way a kid would talk like that." Maybe this book should have been about kindergartners or first graders, but there is no way children in fifth grade living in New York would not have heard about this event. Tedious to read.

In a curious but successful hybrid of fact and fiction, an affable stuffed polar bear is the narrator of this true tale written in 1913 by Spedden, an American heiress who traveled extensively with her husband and their son, Douglas. Polar, a character modeled on an actual toy that Douglas received as a Christmas gift, offers a chatty travelogue of the Speddens' visits to such locales as Madeira, Algiers and Paris. The bear's detailed account may prove tedious to the target audience-until midway through the book, when the Speddens and Polar board a new luxury liner called the Titanic. The family survives the disastrous collision with the iceberg (however, according to an epilogue by Leighton H. Coleman III, a descendant of the author, Douglas died in a car accident three years later). Snapshots from the Speddens' photo album and other memorabilia (e.g., a 1910 postcard of the F.A.O. Schwartz toy store, where Polar is purchased; a ticket entitling the bearer to use of the Turkish baths aboard the Titanic) provide intriguing glimpses of a long-gone lifestyle. Great book for our Titanic study

This book was a wonderful addition to our Titanic study. My kids loved learning about the boy in the book. I liked that the book gave an account of those who had traveled on the boat. It was interesting learning about the boy and his illness and his journey on Titanic.

The paperback book was bound together well. The pages were easy to turn and still stay in good shape.
