Heaven's Queen (Paradox Book 3), by Rachel Bach

From the moment she took a job on Captain Caldswell's doomed ship, Devi Morris' life has been one disaster after another: government conspiracies, two alien races out for her blood, an incurable virus that's eating her alive.
Now, with the captain missing and everyone -- even her own government -- determined to hunt her down, things are going from bad to impossible. The sensible plan would be to hide and wait for things to blow over, but Devi's never been one to shy from a fight, and she's getting mighty sick of running.
It's time to put this crisis on her terms and do what she knows is right. But with all human life hanging on her actions, the price of taking a stand might be more than she can pay.

About the Author
Rachel Bach grew up wanting to be an author and a super villain. Unfortunately, super villainy proved surprisingly difficult to break into, so she stuck to writing and everything worked out great. Great Ending To a Complex and Interesting Series
By Talvi
Heaven's Queen exuberantly concludes the action packed and well written Paradox trilogy. I greatly enjoyed all three books: a gripping story where there are layers of morality and character, no one is all good or wholly evil, no outcome is guaranteed, and you can bet our plucky merc heroine is going to fight until the end. This is a series I heartily recommend for its humor, non stop action, excellent world building, and distinct, complex, nuanced characters.

Plot: Devi and Rupert have escaped in the Xith'Cal escape pod and want to find a place to hide out from the Eyes, Terrans, aliens, and everyone else in the universe bent on finding them. But an afterthought from an old friend will plunge the couple right back into the storm - with old friends now working against them and more than their own fates at stake.

At the center of the series is Devi - a simple girl with the heart of a soldier and strength of will. In the first book, I worried that the romance would 'emasculate' her to the extent that she became a soppy mess of romantic goo. Boy, was I wrong. By the second book, she is still fighting with all her heart but we're never given a sense that she is omnipotent or a super fighter. Just that she is tenacious, flawed, and doing the best she can with what she is given.

Caldwell, Maat, and the other characters, as conflicted as they are, really create a sense of place. Although at times I felt Rupert was more her handbag than a valued partner, I still had to love that it was never black and white for him or any of the other characters. They are all doing what they believe is the right thing to save humanity in a very dangerous universe.

The plot built greatly from the first book. As with a stone thrown into a still pond, the ripples became larger and larger in a very organic manner. The worldbuilding and story really are superb throughout, with the author dropping just enough hints to keep us reading and not give too much away.

By this third book, Bach really caught her stride with Devi - her bon mots were sharp and on point, loving adoration of her armor and guns a great affectation, and dogged view of a very conflicted situation steadfast. Devi is definitely loveable in the best way possible: an everywoman who knows what she is and what she wants to be.

This is a really great read. Each book in the series topped itself for action, plot, and writing, building strength upon strength with each page. It's so rare to get a trilogy where the plot not only tightens and builds but also the characters grow yet remain consistently unique in their own ways. Author Bach really did a great job of keeping this tightly written.

This will definitely be one of my favorite books, if not series, this year. Highly recommended.

3.5 stars: a decent conclusion to a somewhat offbeat series
By Cissa
This book does not stand alone. Do not read it unless you've read the previous 2.

For me, this one was- OK. the various plot elements from the first 2 books ended up having a very straightforward solution... which was opposed by the Powers That Be for various reasons, so our heroine renegade had to work around them. Fair enough.

I did think the threads were resolved a bit too simply. And the romance thread got seriously treacly toward the end, which did not fit with the hard-core soldiers involved.

There was some great world-building that was not shown to full advantage here.

I do want to say that Devi is one of the more coherent and consistent characters I've read lately. She's a tough chick, and her first impulse to anything is to kick ass... but she has learned and grown- some- and despite the romance, ended up with exactly what she wanted from the beginning (plus her lad). I liked that she did not get all sensitive and girly, even in the romance. I do love me a heroine with FOCUS!

This was lighter space opera than it looked like it could have been in "Fortune's Pawn" (book #1). It's still a fun read.

Fantastic Conclusion to an Outstanding Trilogy
By Barbara Elness
Wow, this final book in the Paradox trilogy was astounding, I loved it so much. In this last book, Deviana Morris is getting tired of all the running she’s had to do to escape everyone who is either out to control her and the deadly virus she’s carrying, or just flat out kill her. Doing either is more difficult that you would think, since Devi is a skilled fighter and has managed to acquire a few allies that are ready to help her. She’s trying to find a way to resolve a bad situation, with the least loss of life, including her own. She’s made a promise that she’s determined to keep, and even if everyone else thinks it may result in the end of their existence, she thinks she can find a way, even if it means giving everything to do it. I had my doubts about Devi’s romantic interest, since there were some pretty unforgivable actions in the previous book, but I think there was redemption as he became a stalwart defender, asking nothing in return, and at considerable cost to him with the betrayal of all he had been loyal to for so many years. The conclusion was exciting, heartbreaking, and ultimately totally satisfying; a wonderful end to such a fantastic series.

Diamond Boy, by Michael Williams

My father says that a journey should always change your life in some way. Well, when you have nothing, I suppose a journey promises everything.
"Diamonds for everyone." That's what fifteen-year-old Patson Moyo hears when his family arrives in the Marange diamond fields. Soon Patson is working in the mines along with four friends, pooling their profits for a chance at a better life. Each of them hopes to find a girazi, a priceless stone that could change their circumstances forever. But when the government's soldiers come to Marange, Patson's world is shattered.
Set against the backdrop of Zimbabwe's brutal recent history, Diamond Boy is the story of a young man who succumbs to greed but finds his way out through a transformative journey to South Africa in search of his missing sister, in search of freedom, and in search of himself.
A high-stakes, harrowing adventure in the blood-diamond fields of southern Africa, from the critically acclaimed author of Now Is the Time for Running.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Patson Moyo's life is perfectly ordinary. He is on the cross-country team with his best friend, Sheena. His father, a teacher, is often a little dreamy but a wonderful storyteller. His perky little sister, Grace, loves to play games on his cell phone. Patson never would have guessed that his smart, university-graduate father, who had won the Outstanding Teacher Award four years in a row, can barely make ends meet, due to government corruption and the massive devaluation of the Zimbabwean dollar. Egged on by Patson's stepmother, Sylvia, the Moyos decide to improve their situation by traveling to Marage where Sylvia's brother lives and it is claimed that there are "diamonds for everyone." The power of Patson's story is rooted in the very mundane rites of daily life that even modern American teenagers will find familiar—the emoticon-filled texting between Patson and his sister, the angst and anxiety of a kiss between friends—juxtaposed with the real and menacing danger of the brutal whims of corrupt army officers and traitorous fellow miners. Diamond Boy is a companion novel to Williams's other book about war-torn Zimbabwe, Now Is the Time for Running (Little Brown, 2013). Readers of his past work will find a few familiar characters here, but even readers new to Williams's fiction will be similarly engrossed by his deft, unflinching prose. Teens will be left haunted by Patson's harsh yet essentially hopeful journey, where greed, despair, luck, and wonder intertwine on the diamond fields of Marage.—Evelyn Khoo Schwartz, Georgetown Day School, Washington, DC

Review
Praise for Diamond Boy: An Amelia Elizabeth Walden Award FinalistAn Amazon.ca Best Books of December 2014 for Children and Teens Selection* "A compelling novel that brings home the desperate lives of exploited poor, and Diamond Boy will give every civilized reader pause...More than simply a good read,Diamond Boy is a multilayered, teachable novel with a variety of approaches and is highly recommended for middle and high school collections."―VOYA (starred review)

*"[A] riveting tale...Williams draws from real events to bring this harrowing story to life, infusing Patson's narrative with terrifying accuracy. Along the way, the story crosses over with Williams's 2011 novel, Now Is the Time for Running, though readers need not be familiar with that book to be gripped and horrified by the troubles facing Patson and his nation."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"[A] compelling epic...operatic in scope and intensity...A haunting, harrowing tale guaranteed to give "bling" a whole new meaning."―Kirkus Reviews

"Deft, unflinching prose. Teens will be left haunted by Patson's harsh yet essentially hopeful journey, where greed, despair, luck, and wonder intertwine on the diamond fields of Marange."―SLJ

"Williams' fast-paced, tension-packed story is filled with cliff-hangers, [and] perils...a satisfying and eminently readable novel."―Booklist

"Williams's portrayal of middle-class, cell phone-carrying African youth will give readers a different perspective on the modern continent, even as some of its people still cling to the belief in shavi, or luck granted by the ancestors. Patson's shavi is strong, but the diamonds' ability to either transform or destroy a life is something he continues to wrestle with through the very last page."―Horn Book

"This is a harrowing read, no doubt, ... but Williams ably weaves in moments of kindness and small successes that keep things from feeling completely hopeless. Extensive end material offers historical context for the diamond industry in Africa, land mines, and the connections to the author's earlier work."―The Bulletin

"Diamond Boy is an important and eye-opening book, told with heart."―Patricia McCormick, author of the National Book Award Finalist Sold

The search for diamonds will change Patson's life
By Holly Scudero
At the insistence of his wife, Patson’s father has packed up the family and moved them to Marange, where the diamond fields promise riches for everyone willing to dig for them. Patson is eager to devote himself to mining, positive that his girazi awaits, and that someday soon his family can leave Marange and start a new life. But when President Mugabe’s soldiers arrive to take control of the mines, Patson’s family is ripped apart and life changes forever. Now, as Patson struggles to heal from the violence and cruelty of Mugabe’s soldiers, he is desperate to escape Marange and go find his sister, who seems to have been kidnapped.

Michael Williams’s "Diamond Boy" is one of the most intense novels I’ve read in a long, long time, and I mean that in the best way possible. This story offers readers a fascinating glimpse into the recent history of Zimbabwe, and if it seems a bit slow at first, get ready to get sucked in for quite a ride. Your heart will break as Patson’s life shatters, and you will be on the edge of your seat as he follows his sister into South Africa, desperate to rescue her from an uncertain future. This is an amazing book!

Fast read, real and likable characters, great window is one southern African experience - good for adults or teens
By Kristin
Fast read. I hadn't realized when I got this book that I had read this author previously (Now Is the Time For Running). I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The author has a beautiful, unique African voice (fascinating seeing a white South African writing with a black southern African voice). The writing is thus quite lyrical. This book highlights the terrors of Zimbabwe under Mugabe rule, with a focus on the diamonds fields, told through the voice of the main character, Patson. Patson travels to the fields with his father and sister, finding an environment quite unlike he had expected (opportunity, yes, but not unfettered and opportunity at likely high costs) . First, he works under the eyes of local tyrants/businessmen. Next, he works under military rule. And lastly, he runs for South Africa, seeking safety and better opportunities. This book is a good introduction to those with little experience with South Africa, in a novel form, and it's also a nice "back door" for those who have experience with southern Africa and would like something to remind them of their memories to/in it.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 4–6—This tongue-in-cheek overview features a folksy narrative of how and why country music developed in the barns and back roads of rural America. The text doesn't miss a beat—it covers instruments, early recordings, yodeling (with a humorous spread on how-to), the Great Depression, gospel, movie cowboys, a "paper-doll" spoof of singers' costumes, hillbilly jazz, World War II, acceptable country pets (hound dogs, varmints, hawgs), country "vee-hickles," Nashville, the age of TV, the 1990s explosion of country sound, and much more. While poking fun at itself with a "country words" dictionary and a segment on "country hair," the book offers a vast amount of historical fact amid a multitude of caricatures of country stars. Some of the pages are quite dark, but the ever-changing backgrounds and fonts with colored-pencil and crayon illustrations carry an amazing variation of detail. The book gets a bit over-the-top with "The Big List of Country Nicknames," stars depicted as winged cupids on the cover, and Hank Williams's problems with pistols, but country-music fans probably will only mind that there are faces not present. A long who's who at the back identifies the performers pictured throughout. Holly George-Warren's Honky-Tonk Heroes & Hillbilly Angels (Houghton, 2006) offers a simple biographical look at a few artists, while Bertholf's broad view goes further to explain the genre to young readers and does so in an entertaining manner.—Mary Elam, Forman Elementary School, Plano, TX

From Booklist
Using a folksy, down-home tone, Bertholf, a country-western singer himself, takes readers on a whirlwind tour through music history. He begins in a "brand-new country . . . where if you wanted to hear some music, you had to make it yourself." After briefly explaining what the U.S. was like in those days, Bertholf also shows the rudimentary instruments folks used (spoons!) and how songs came from things they actually did, like working on the railroad. Radio and early records created stars, and caricatures of the musicians dot the oversize format. The artwork also sets the stage in many clever ways: country singers as paper dolls, a congregation of gospel and church singers in a choir (separated by race). History marches on, and the music changes and refines itself as it rolls from the country to the city, especially Nashville. Much works here, but there are also several flaws: singers are identified in a difficult-to-read key, and the muddy grays and dirty browns used as background colors are a turnoff. For the most part, though, this bubbles with wit and solid information. Ilene Cooper

Never tease a squeezel
By E. R. Bird
Now I am not what you would call a big fan of country music. I know my basics, and I'm vaguely aware of its history, but truth be told country is not all the prevalent on my iPod. So the question I have to ask myself here is, do I feel sufficiently qualified to read and review a children's non-fiction picture book with the title, "The Long Gone Lonesome History of Country Music"? I mean, if I don't know my Charlie Rich from my Johnny Bond, how am I going to be able to sufficiently judge how well author/illustrator Bret Bertholf has convered this particular genre's highs and lows? In this particular case, I have my ever-loving, country listenin' husband to turn to. Side by side we read through Bertholf's book and came to a single conclusion. For all its flaws, and there are one or two, this is a jaw-dropping piece of history. The pictures are stunning (if occasionally difficult to make out), the facts always interesting, the history correct, and the storyline faithful. Add in the fact that Bertholf has managed to literally give face to almost every single person who ever even THOUGHT about singing about their mean-eyed cat and you've a book that looks, acts, and is like no other.

Did you know that you might be a country singer and not even know it? It's true. And Bret Bertholf is going to show you why. Concentrating the whole of his attention on the American South, the book dips deep into the past to talk about how people would kill time in the olden days. There wasn't a lot to do, aside from creating your own music. Then, slowly, technology began to change everything. There was the radio and the record players. Those, in turn, led to the first country music star, Jimmie Rodgers. Time goes by and different musical forms like gospel, jazz, and honky tonks changed how the music sounded. WWII came, the singing cowboy was born, and Nashville grew and grew. With humorous asides, ridiculously in-depth pictures, and more than its fair share of humor, the book shows exactly how country music came to be, and where its future may lay someday.

This is Bret Bertholf's first solo picture book and I would like to point out that the man has credentials out the wazoo. From the bookflap I've learned that not only can Mr. Bertholf yodel (no mean feat) but he's also a part of the group named Halden Woford and Hi-Beams. You may have heard them on A Prairie Home Companion in the past. The book reflects what is obviously his long-standing love for the heroes of the country world. Obviously at some point Mr. Bertholf thought to himself that it would be a shame to mention only some country music stars and not others. The solution? Endpapers. Starting with 1920, every year since that time is given one train car and one singer/musician sitting on top. Each person is presented like a well-rendered bobblehead doll, their features recognizable and (mostly) cheery. My husband assures me that in many cases, the year that a particular star rides does not always correspond to when they really hit it big. There's also an inclusion of Bing Crosby that's sure to have a purist or two scratching their heads. The train ends, curiously enough, with 1999. I suppose the author didn't want to judge too soon the more contemporary stars of today. Could it have killed him to include a Dixie Chick, though? That's a personal beef. Not a professional one.

Every face in this book is different. Every single one. That may not sound like much, but once you begin to notice it, it takes on a certain appeal. My favorite image of the book was a remarkable shot of people standing in line for soup during the Depression. Bertholf, in his agreeable fashion, explains the basics of what happened by offering up a hypothetical situation where a person has handed all their money to Stocky Margaret. But take a gander at the faces in the line. There are at least seventeen of them and each one is different, historically accurate, and deeply realistic. Now turn to the Nashville section. On stage you can see Jake Tullock breaking it down with Roy Acuff and Ernest Tubb. That's not the impressive part. The musicians have their back to us and we can see in the dim light the faces of the audience members. Now Bertholf could have made the audience dark or drawn a generic face or two. Instead he has given each person there a personality, a hairstyle in keeping with the times, and, even in some cases, an action. It's mesmerizing. I have a very hard time looking away from it just to continue writing this review. Wow.

Now the art is wonderful in some ways. You have paper dolls one one page and a kind of fill-in-the-blank songwriting sheet on another. I love Bertholf's art. I just wish I could show it to large groups of people. Time and time again the artist will proffer fabulous scenes or images or people, yet do so with an incredibly dark earth-toned palette. The illustrations in this book were done with colored pencil, "and Caran d'Ache crayon on Canson pastel paper." This means they are always amazing. Unfortunately, it also means that they are very very dark. A couple spreads, like a sudden discussion of "Countrypolitan" and Patsy Cline, will lighten up the book once in a while, but more often than not the images are hard to see. If, as a children's librarian, I want to show a group of kids "The Rules of Bluegrass", I won't be able to because the page is so dark brown and grey that it's almost black. Bertholf obviously created this book with one-on-one parent/child reading in mind. Had he lightened things up a little, though, this would make for an excellent readaloud to whole classrooms. A pity.

For the most part, Bertholf is more interested in pinpointing the important moments and influences on country music than in spending a lot of time talking about some of the implications. This isn't to say he doesn't reference that history obliquely. On a two page spread entitled Gospel Roots we see two different gospel choirs. One the left-hand page are white singers like Bradley Kincaid and Abby Hutchinson. On the right-hand page is a black gospel choir, segregated from the white choir and containing members like Bessie Smith and Thomas A. Dorsey. You won't get an explanation of why the Confederate flag still flies or even of how racism has influenced the music throughout the years. That isn't to say, however, that Bertholf isn't going to allude to it once in a while.

Now when it comes to non-fiction, kid-appeal is key. If you can wrangle a child into getting interested in a subject that they may or may not have cared for right from the start, you're worth your weight in kiddie lit gold, my friend. Mr. Bertholf most certainly falls into that category. First of all, the aforementioned pictures, for all that you probably couldn't make them out from a distance of five feet, are wholly entrancing when seen up close and personal. Apparently Mr. Bertholf (and I'm getting this second-hand) lured Little, Brown & Co. into showing an interest in this book with a little two-page spread sent to them entitled, "How To Yodel!" It's in the finished product, I should add, and it's quite a magnificent spread. A large mouth, the gutter of the book falling neatly somewhere around the wisdom tooth area, opens as wide as possible as the words, "Don't Look" and "Where Yodels come from" point to the gaping maw. All kinds of tidbits like this make the book hard for a kid to put down. There's a section on Country Pets that tells you about Hound Dogs, Hawgs, and the cutest l'il ole Varmints you ever did see. There's the Big List of Country Names where you take the initials of your real name and come up with your country music alternative (I'm either Cooter Loudbottom or Goober Loudbottom). There are monsters and hot rods and puzzle pieces and all kinds of stuff falling about the place. There's even a peculiar yet adorable "squeezel" that a lot of children will have a fun time finding on one page or another.

Lest you feel from what I'm saying that Bertholf is making fun of the country music genre, allow me to put your mind at rest. Sure, he plays up some of the sillier aspects. The singing cowboys, big hair, and sequin-riddled clothing are all present. At the same time, however, you get a true sense of his respect for the genre at large. The meticulousness of his history and the number of names he's able to pull out are impressive. I was more than a little disappointed to see that Bertholf did not include a Bibliography of sources, however. I think this was a huge mistake. Libraries that want to classify this book as non-fiction will be all the more reluctant to add it to their collection when they find that the author has not backed up his facts with any reliable texts. And what about kids who want to learn more about country music? Wouldn't a list of websites, books for further reading, and general articles have fit in like a dream? Sure, there's a list at the story's end of all the famous faces that cropped up in earlier pictures, but that does little to bolter the book's credibility.

The book changes constantly from spreads that are horizontal to those that are vertical, but I don't feel that this upsets the nature of the reading any. Just keeps you on your toes. Now, I know that I haven't even mentioned half the stuff you'll find in this book. It's detailed within an inch of its life and if I had more time I'd talk to you about the peculiar look Bob Dylan sports in this title, or the fact that Dolly Parton's boobs are, to put it mildly, unrecognizable. But I can't cover everything Bertholf has done, and that's okay. It just means that when April rolls around you're going to have to remember to seek out and read THE most memorable country music picture book for the kiddies. It has its flaws, but they don't keep it from being the best of the best. Keep your eyes peeled.

Great book and illustrations!

We bought this for our daughter and for a friend's son. I think we have enjoyed it more than the kids. Definitely a great gift for any country music fan you know - and when I say country, I mean Johnny Cash country not bubble gum country. Enjoy!

Great read, with great art!
By Joshua N Sapir
I'll admit right off the bat that my knowledge of country music is limited to Johnny Cash and... well that's about it. This book was a lot of fun to read with my kids, and really gives a great breakdown of the history of country music along with an overview of the different sub-genres within country. I may have to get on Spotify and look all this music up because it has definitely piqued my interest! Plus there are some fun little sections like "Finding your Country Name," that we had a good laugh over. On top of the good story and history, the art is very well done and creative.
