Myopic and dated, the kind of book to get rid of.

I just received my copy of "Hampton Style". Although publised in 1993, it looks like it might have been published in1983 or even 1973. The photgraphs are small and far too often taken of claustrophobically tight subject matter. Over and over weirdly dated and out of style interiors and architecture are pictured, not out of style because of the date of the book, out of style when the book was made. Two dimensional painted duck decoy decorations, really? Cheep aluminum sliding doors from the 1960s, in a later interior, really? "White on white" appliances, really? This book makes the Hamptons look tired and tatty, whis not my experience of the Hamptons at all.

Maybe a quarter of the illustrations are of paintings of local scenes. These do not contribtue anything to a sense of Hamptons style. So too, there are many historical photgraphs, which really do a very poor job of supporting the 'temples', 'gingerbread', 'aesthetic', and other categories which the book tries and fails to organize Hampton styles into. I do not know what purpose this book was made for. It gives no coherant sense of Hampton houses. There is no real information to be gleaned about Hamptons gardens. History is mixed in as is the fine art. The result is a mess. So what purpose? Was it a coffee table book? Maybe made to be given as a housewarming present? Well that'd be one way not to be invited back. I will cycle this book right back out of my extensive librabry because there is bo reason to crack it open ever again, a complete waste of space.

In an arch, sophisticated display of literary agility, Hirsch (Last Dance at the Hotel Kempinski) offers a silly array of poems for youthful (and not so youthful) philologists and word sleuths. From palindromes and spoonerisms ("Dr. Spooner Writes the Menu" serves up such treats as "a chilled grease sandwich" and "brightly leaded chalk pops") to alliteration, haiku, onomatopoeia and more, he commits flagrantly nimble wordplay, tongue firmly planted in cheek. Hirsch is in splendid form, whether penning a sonnet to his son ("Nay, thou art more precious than a Snickers Barre") that does double duty as an acrostic or yielding to the siren song of puns with a poem entitled "Eye Rhyme" ("Underneath a shady bough I'm startled by a sudden cough"), followed by one entitled "Ewe Rhyme" ("There once was a man whose name was Lou Whose favorite dish was lamb ragout He liked nothing better than a stew" even author Annie Proulx makes an appearance). Although the running commentary comes off as a tad solipsistic ("We made up `Ewe Rhyme' as a companion for `Eye Rhyme.' We managed to come up with 21 different ways of spelling the same sound"), and the pages grow crowded with these fussy footnotes packed with definitions and etymological roots, the asides are often witty ("All work and no plagiarism is no fun at all") and discerning readers will discover plenty to appreciate. Debut children's illustrator Ha's frolicsome computer-generated graphics keep pace with the verbal acrobatics, and the energy he brings to the pages with his shapes and squiggles displays a certain Chris Raschka-esque flair. Could the title be a play on "effigy" (the titular poem suggests it may be)? Ages 10-up.

Grades 5-8--Hirsch, two of his children, and an imaginative illustrator have come up with an unusual book that is sure to inspire wordplay in language-loving readers. The first poem, "F*E*G," is a variant of the ABC rhyme every child learns: "Abie's seedy effigy-." Puns, palindromes, acrostics, and literary references of all sorts abound in the selections that follow, but the sense of fun and experimentation is never forgotten. "Eye Rhyme" goes like this: "Underneath a shady bough/I'm startled by a sudden cough/I fear that someone wants my dough/And figure that I've had enough." A footnote explains that in an eye rhyme, the poem rhymes to the eye but not the ear. Almost every selection has a lively and interesting note and some are lengthy. Generous white space breaks up the pages in a wonderful design in which the graceful and dynamic pictures are a perfect match for the sly humor of the text. Ha's computer art has a casual and sophisticated look that will appeal to older children. Certainly not every reader will take to this, but some will love it, and clever teachers may find this volume a great way to create enthusiasm for poetry.

In his General Noncritical Tragical-Comical-Historical-Pastoral Introduction, Hirsch (an author, performer, and producer, who also runs a restaurant) writes, "these poems are all the result of fooling around." The foolers are Hirsch and his two young sons, and, clearly, they've had a field day playing with words. The results are a gallimaufry of verses packed with puns (both visual and auditory), onomatopoeia, alliteration, palindromes, spoonerisms, and various and sundry other amusing devices. Most are accompanied by occasionally self-conscious footnotes that explain references, comment on the devices, and define the terms. Further definitions are offered in an appended glossary. Illustrator Ha's computer-assisted graphics are eye-catching companions, clever, colorful, and always appropriate. Sophisticated fun for older kids and word-loving adults. Michael Cart

Imagine a book that has a whole collection of fun games that ignite a child's love of language. Imagine a child getting excited about homonyms, and even vowels! (as in "Murder most vowel" - a game you'll want to play along with them). Imagine a compendium of playful ways to exercise your child�s language skills (and your own, by the way) through the mental calisthenics and verbal acrobatics presented in this highly imaginative book.
This book will excite a child's mind, and thrill your own, as together you travel on an adventure of discovering the power that lies hidden beneath "ordinary" words. This book excites kids -- of ALL ages. If you don't have any kids whom you can read this with, then have no fear; just tell people it's for a "nephew" or "student" and buy the book for yourself.
I myself am all �grown up� so I have to read it on the sly when I'm not around actual children, but when I do I can�t wait to find some more �kids� to share it with.
Because it�s pure fun, and you don�t have any other book like it� yet.

The suggested age on this one is way off. I would say this could be:

entertaining to the young ones.(3-6)

great intro to styles of poetry (7-9)

helpful in writing your own poetry (7-100)

The bottom of each page has great insights, written as if the author was chatting with you;telling you where some of the ideas came from for the poem on that page.

This is a great classroom tool as well as a fun reading book at home.

The wonderful world of words

Amusing and thought provoking. My 12 yo son and I read this together from the library, and he wouldn't take it back! Gramma bought it for him for his birthday. The authors use many different literary styles, and sneak in lots of education. We have memorized many of the selections. This also stimulated us to continue word play and to write some poetry of our own.

Gorgeous Good-Humored Celebrity Fun!

I cannot remember ever seeing a book of photography as filled with fun as this collection of images from Us Magazine. The humor is solid and clean, something that comedians have a hard time duplicating. The book is greatly enhanced by the special genius of Mark Seliger for this type of work.
Before going further, let me caution you that some images are of partially undressed women that would earn this material an R rating (on the soft side) if it were contained in a motion picture.
The photographs are reproduced in both color and black-and-white. The reproduction quality is very high, and the editors have chosen well where to use two-page spreads and where not to. Although not every image displays good-humored fun, about two-thirds of them do. The book probably would have worked even better if every image had followed that theme. In most cases, the image itself is a happy one that also contains a joke about the celebrity involved . . . creating two ways to have a fun with the image.

"You are a vision of nowness" is the description of this book written inside. I personally found the images more timeless than that. You get a sense of what is universally appealing at all times and to almost all people.

Very snappy, cool, and up-to-date collection of photography

Crazy, Sexy, Cool is one of the best books one can buy if you like stars/celebrities. The collection of photographs, from the pages of US magazine
show celebrities in intimate, off-guard circumstances, and many of the shots are either funny, sexy (the title gives it away), or
really telling of the personality. I think US really delivers on letting you "inside" to get to know people --- not like most
magazines do, but better. This book shows you the best of the past couple years of the magazine, and its a great book to have to
see the stars you like: Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson, Nicholas Cage, Mira SOrvino, Cindy Crawford....
Lots of babes, men and women. Its gonna be a stocking stuffer for a couple of my friends this year!

Excellent 'coffee table' book...and for autographing

Actually, I have two favorite celebrity photography books: this one and Rolling Stone: Photographers. I am an avid autograph collector; so, I use these books whenever I hear about a celebrity being in the area. At the moment, I have this book signed by Denis Leary and Stephen Dorf..with more to come, I hope. About the only photograph I didn't like was the two-pager of Alicia Silverstone. It doesn't really look like her. This is definitely a great book to have on the coffee table for company while you're still getting ready. :)
