Very Funny!

In Nanny Piggin's third installment, she ski jumps, meets a talking lion, defeats an evil ringmaster, and stops her brother, Boris the Bear, from joining the ballet. Overall, she is the world's most amazing flying pig ever! R.A Spratt has written an amazingly funny and compelling series of short stories- for all ages. I loved it, and this is for anyone who loves laughing, circus pigs, crazy random things, and cake.

Great books to read with your kids

Since they came out, I've been reading these books to my daughter (she's 11 now) and we both love hearing about the adventures of Nanny Piggins. These books are hilarious with us laughing out loud to them. My only complaint is having to wait a year more more between the release of each book.

Besides being a good read-aloud, what I liked was the detail in the art. When you read this to baby there are lots of things to point at and name. Dog, frog, duckies, birds and bees. Umbrellas, boots, coat, pillow and other things like flowers, clouds, mud, and rainbow. (I don't know about you, but that's important to me that a book has something educational to share.)

The sounds of spring.

If you have a toddler who loves flip-the-flap books this one should be a hit. Behind each flap is the sound that accompanies the action on the opposite page. For read aloud sessions mom or dad can do the main narrative and the child can supply the sound. What fun!
The large illustrations of Baby and her dog are also a plus as are the easy to turn pages. So have a good time with this Springtime Baby playing outdoors.

We picked up the summer book from this series at our library book sale. My one year old loved it so much that we bought him all the others as the seasons rolled around. This was a great addition to his Easter basket. He loves to flip the flaps and make the noises like the animals in the books. He will even sit alone with these books look at them over and over on his own. A new favorite in our house!

Fascinating and educational!

I am on a quest to obtain all of these Brown Paper School books, because every single one I own is a real educational gem.

This one is no exception - kids (and probably most of their parents) will learn so much about North American Indians through this little book, with its informative stories, vivid retellings of Indian legends, and engaging projects and games.

The book divides the North American Indians into the Peoples of the Northwest, California, Southwest, Great Basin, Plains, Northeast, and Southeast. Each section is amply illustrated with black and white drawings. The book gives a really good feel for the cultural differences of tribes based on where they live.

However, if you are using this book to teach specific content and not just for enjoyment, I will say I found it necessary to supplement this book with others in order to round out the curriculum and refine my children's ability to compare and contrast the various North American Indians.

This book is an excellent resource for teaching US History.

I am a K-8 teacher and tutor. I have been using this book to teach early American History to a 4th grade homeschooling student. This book has offered excellent multicultural perspectives, and has fascinated my student with the legends and descriptions of early Native American cultures. I love being able to integrate art, writing, reading and history with this book, and my student has enjoyed following the directions to make her own moccasins, tipis, and other Native American crafts. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is interested in gaining more perspective than is typically offered in a classroom history textbook.

Kushner, best known for his best-selling When Bad Things Happen to Good People (1985), here deals with an equally vexing topic, overcoming shame and guilt. As in his other books, Rabbi Kushner turns to the Bible to find answers to hard questions, and when it comes to guilt and shame, there is no better place to start than at the beginning, with the story of Adam and Eve. The disobedience shown in the Garden of Eden came to be known as original sin, sort of a gene for badness that is passed down from generation to generation. But Kushner has a different take on the Adam and Eve story, seeing the duo as brave rather than disobedient, willing to risk paradise to become fully human. It must be said that Kushner tends to twist a tale until it fits the point he is trying to make (this is especially true in his discussion of Cain and Abel); nevertheless, his arguments, directly stated, are always thought provoking and people centered. Kushner is clearly writing to bring comfort and to show his audience how to find forgiveness in their own lives, whether that forgiveness is directed toward others or oneself. An unconventional reading of the Garden of Eden story, offering the best-selling rabbi's suggestions about its psychological implications for the children of Adam and Eve. Rabbi Kushner (When Bad Things Happen to Good People, 1981; To Life: A Celebration of Jewish Being and Thinking, 1993; etc.) contends that we demand too much of ourselves and forgive too little. The traditional reading of the Adam and Eve saga as a paradigm of disobedience and divine punishment is responsible, he feels, for much of the unnecessary guilt that we heap on ourselves. We must free ourselves of the notion that God demands perfection of us. ``It is the notion that we were supposed to be perfect, and that we could expect others to be perfect . . . that leaves us feeling constantly guilty and perpetually disappointed.'' The purpose of religion, contends Kushner, is to ease our troubled souls and not to exacerbate our doubts and conflicts. Religion ideally teaches us that not only does God forgive our mistakes, but that our mistakes have a divine purpose, as experiences from which we can grow. ``Religion properly understood is the cure for feelings of guilt and shame, not their cause.'' And just as we must learn to forgive ourselves, we must be more forgiving of others. The alternative is to turn ourselves into victims and others into victimizers. Sin and punishment are not our inheritance from Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve's legacies of work, love, and the awareness of mortality make up the ``burden and challenges of being truly human.'' Nowhere, however, does Kushner consider more complex questions, such as how society should handle those who suffer not from an excess of guilt, but from its absence. Replete with personal anecdotes and references to contemporary literature, this is an appealing but ultimately shallow piece of feel-good pop theology. Tilted my world!

Rabbi Kushner takes us back to the very beginning - back through Genesis to the Garden of Eden and re-examines the story of Adam and Eve. He re-evaluates the "curses" for eating of the Tree of Knowledge in a new, refreshing, and affirming way. All of this helps to explain the human conditions of shame and guilt and sheds a whole new light on the concept of Original Sin. There is much to chew on and ponder about this book. I have thought back to it daily (& quoted it often) since I finished it.

It is an easy read and worth reading slowly - letting the new perspectives wash over and settle in. It has changed my life in a way that very few other books have. I am a second year seminary student so I have a lot of "spiritual" reading - this was one I read on the recommendation of a CPE resident. I recommend it highly to anyone - especially those who may struggle with their own myth of perfection and what it means to be good enough.

Wonderful interpretation of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden.
How we all evolved from the animal kingdom to the human kingdom.
Our eyes were opened and we were made aware of right from wrong, of evil vs. good. We have choices, we are not programmed by God to be a certain way, we can choose to be or not to be.
Another book by Rabbi Kushner that has been life changing is the wonderful little book "Why Bad Things Happen to Good People".
