I was extremely disappointed in this book
By Linda L. Millerick
As a James Patterson fan, I was extremely disappointed in this book. There was no resolution to any of the characters. It felt like he'd written an outline, filled in a few places and left the reader hanging.

Third time is not a charm
By Rebecca Bartlett
Disappointing. The saga of the Angel children continue but they might as well be floating toys in a stream buffeted by forces they can't control and can't see. Tandy doesn't even solve a mystery in this book. She just gets attacked repeatedly from vicious and stupid adults. Harry's on drugs, Hugo is clueless and all the adults are monsters.

Schlocky and amateurish at best. Save your money for something better.
By Bruce from LA
This is the worst Patterson/co-author book I have ever read....and I have read almost all of them. This is just schlock....amateurish at best...and just silly at worst.

The story and plot are just so silly and the characters are one dimensional at best and none of them are realistic nor particularly engaging. I wasn't sure I could even manage to finish reading the story...and when it was over I wondered why I had even bothered.

Save your money for something else that makes some sense and gives you some sort of satisfaction and closure at the end instead of just wondering WTF this was all about anyhow and why you ended up not caring after the final climax anyway because it was just so....so....freaking lame that no one could possibly care about the protagonists and their ditzy existences. Total waste of time and money.

A GRITTY THRILLER SET IN THE WORLD OF POWERFUL NEW YORK LAW FIRMS, FROM NICK SANTORA, WRITER OF THE HIT CRIME DRAMAS THE SOPRANOS, LAW & ORDER, PRISON BREAK and BREAKOUT KINGS AND THE NATIONALLY BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF SLIP & FALL.

Is it really insider trading if you've been an outsider your entire life?

Five men. Five walks of life. Every day they come together at the white shoe law firm Olmstead & Taft. But they're not lawyers. They're "Printers": blue-collar guys consigned to the dark basement of the firm charged with copying, collating and delivering the mountains of paperwork that document millions of dollars of sensitive legal secrets.

Until the five are approached by an ambitious young attorney who teaches them what they have: insider information. Together they make a plan to take the classified documents that pass through their hands every day and use them to get rich. They create a joint account to deposit the spoils. An account with a safeguard--each one only knows one section of the access code.

Which means that for all five conspirators, there's no way out. But as too much money piles up to go unnoticed, the Printers will discover there's one thing even worse than being an outsider: being in too deep.

Review
"Santora expertly ratchets up the tension....almost sinfully seductive. Santora takes us far enough inside the separate worlds of our would-be profiteers that we can't help but sympathize with them. Readers will be mighty entertained."―Washington Post

"FIFTEEN DIGITS is a taut, gripping thrill-ride that appeals to the white collar criminal in all of us. I couldn't put it down."―Terence Winter, Creator and Executive Producer of Boardwalk Empire, Executive Producer and Writer of The Sopranos

"A propulsive thriller that hurtles along to a brutal and--trust me--very unexpected conclusion. Santora has a TV writer's sense of pacing, but he also has an eye for character that keeps a reader emotionally engaged in the story. People looking for a Grisham-esque thriller with dash of The Sopranos will find the novel a great summer beach read."―The Hollywood Reporter

"The tension is palpable as very bad things begin to happen to the protagonists, and the reader will race through the book to see what horrors the next page brings."―Booklist, starred review

"Though we are told from the start that things will end tragically, the brutality and shocking suddenness of the climax still catch us by surprise . . . Santora pulls no punches with his Faustus-like story."―Kirkus Reviews

Plight of the Common Man
By Daniel Winford
Like many people, I first learned about Nick Santora from Prison Break, and Breakout Kings. I did my homework and found that he had some impressive credentials before that having been a writer for shows like Law and Order and the Sopranos. All four of those shows I consider to be some of the better of our generation of television. I immediately pre-ordered this novel, Fifteen Digits, in harcover. To hold me over, I also ordered his first novel, Slip and Fall. I wanted to see if the style of his books mirrored the style of his television. The answer: a resounding yes.

Much like in Slip and Fall, the main protagonist in Fifteen Digits is a common everyday man. Rich Mauro could easily be you or me. Raised by his blue collar uncle, Mauro is trying to do something that I have personally found myself challenged with, transitioning from blue collar, to white collar. He is trying to trade in his tool belt, for a brief case, a crowded court room, and a corner office. As an audience, we are taken along this journey through the ups and downs, with staggering authenticity. Santora does a masterful job of passing the character's emotions along to the reader.

We meet a cast of characters along the way that would look out of place even on the island of misfit toys. As we meet these characters, we meet the good sides of them, as well as the bad. We do not see them in the same filter that most people would use, only showing us the savory side that will be pertinent in the latter parts of the story, but rather, we get to know all of the players in the cast.

In my opinion, where Santora excels, especially in Fifteen Digits, is creating a story and characters that the reader can genuinely lose themselves in. Where so many novels introduce a platoon of flat characters with no other purpose that to move the story about, Santora uses round characters that the reader can feel attached to. This opens up a plethora of possibilities for the direction of the story, and if you are familiar with any of Santora's previous works, you know that he can and WILL take the story anywhere he thinks it should go.

The end result is a fantastic novel with amazingly different, well balanced characters, and a story that unfilds with gritty authenticity that allows the reader to never break his or her willing suspension of disbilief. I can, with confidence, tell you that you will enjoy this novel. It is one of the few books that I have read from cover to cover in a single sitting. I am a very slow reader, and it only took me about seven hours. My only complaint is now I have to wait for Santora to write something else.

I know that sometimes it is hard to read a review and know that the same experience will transfer over to you, so perhaps some context is in order. The fiction that I have enjoyed previously aside from Nick Santoras works are: The Mitch Rapp Series (Especially American Assassin) by Vince Flynn, the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child, the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, the John Corey series by Nelson Demille. The one thing that really sets Fifteen Digits apart from the rest of these is its authenticity. So to sum up, if you are look for a book with well developed, likeable, relatable characters, and a story that you can immerse yourself in without feeling out of place, you definitely need to give Santora a try!

Suspense filled thriller
By robert
After reading this title, I must say this is a definite page turner. A great read full of suspense, action packed and will definitely take you on the most thrilling ride. I loved the way the author draws you in with his vivid descriptions on down to how he incorporated each character, giving this novel even more of an edge. The suspense all the way up until the end forces you to dive into this book like a final exam. Well written and looking forward to many more projects from Mr. Santora...Excellent!!!

Another Santora Hit!
By Love2Read
First off, I have to admit that I'm a Nick Santora fan. From Prison Break to Breakout Kings to his first novel, Slip and Fall, I love the characters he creates and the unbelievable dialogue he writes. I pre-ordered this book because, let's be honest, I will read anything he writes, anytime. It downloaded to my Kindle on Tuesday, but I didn't start it until Saturday. Let me tell you, that took a lot of self-control. I waited because I knew that I would not be able to put it down once I started...and I was right! I started it mid-afternoon on Saturday and was done that night. The story moves so quickly, the characters are so well-defined, and the dialogue. Oh, the dialogue. From the first snappy phrase to the last awesome sentence, I just loved it all. Keep writing, Mr. Santora! I, for one, am thrilled you gave up being an attorney to follow your heart.

Like each Prince of All Archenfield before him, Jared must rely on the Council of Twelve to advise him. But he knows he can just as easily be at their mercy--especially when it appears that one of the Twelve might have orchestrated his brother's untimely death. Propelled by his rage over the loss of his brother and wary of all his advisors, Jared can trust only Asta: a clever, strong-willed girl from the settlements, currently serving as the Physician's apprentice. Asta and Jared take it upon themselves to hunt down his brother's assassin--though the assassin may be hunting them, as well.
Murder, betrayal, and intrigue abound in Justin Somper's thrilling YA series debut. Exploring the political machinations of the medieval-esque court and the lives that hang in the balance, Allies & Assassins is a gripping tale of a teen torn between duty and revenge.

Gr 9 Up—From the first page of this hefty volume, the Princedom of Archenfield is plunged into mystery, danger, and intrigue. Prince Anders, who has ruled the kingdom through just two peaceful years, has been found dead, and his 16-year-old brother Jared has automatically become Prince of All Archenfield. Though he is clever and kind, Jared is not prepared to assume the crown. Luckily, he has the Twelve; officers of the court whose job is to advise, teach, and protect him. But can Jared trust them? In the few days before his brother's funeral and his own coronation, Jared and the clever young Physician's Apprentice, Asta, investigate the mystery of Ander's murder, keenly aware that the murderer may be targeting Jared as well. As more victims are claimed, the mismatched young couple uncover lies, secret love affairs, and more suspects than they had expected. Though some of the hints seem obvious, Somper manages to keep the mystery alive with many red herrings, surprises, and plot twists, while deftly setting up the scenario for a sequel. Fans of medieval adventure, murder mysteries, and romance will all find something to like here, and readers will eagerly await the continuation of the this engrossing saga.—MaryAnn Karre, West Middle School, Binghamton, NY

From Booklist
Sixteen-year-old Jared ascends to the throne of Archenfield after his brother Anders is murdered. Now he must learn to navigate the murky waters of politics, while also finding the assassin. The only person he can trust is Asta, the physician’s young apprentice. As the assassin strikes again and again, the situation becomes desperate and Jared must act quickly before his own reign is cut short. Somper’s faux-historical novel is more of a police procedural than the political thriller the title might suggest, and readers looking for fantasy action will be disappointed, since there is no magic and the pace of the story sometimes drags. But those who like the mechanics of forensic detective work will enjoy watching Asta and Jared attempt to logically and scientifically solve the crimes, unknowingly hampered by their lack of modern equipment and know-how. Both teens fight to be taken seriously, and their friendship is a solid component of the story, balancing the huge cast of characters. A cliff-hanger ending will leave readers wanting more. What I Liked:

Just to clear up something - this is NOT a Middle Grade novel. It's Young Adult. Just saying.

I featured this book as my Waiting on Wednesday choice a few months ago on a whim - I didn't know much about the book, except that it was a fantasy novel, and it sounded epic. I hadn't read any of Somper's previous novels, though my sister had, and she said she enjoyed his Vampirates series. So, when the publisher sent me this book, I was thrilled! A chance to read a book that I already wanted to read, even if I knew very little about it. I ended up really enjoying this book - all 500 pages of it (or thereabout).

Jared is the new Prince of Archenfield, after his older brother is suddenly assassinated. No one expected the assassination, as Archenfield has been maintaining friendly alliances with all of its neighbors. But royalty always has enemies, and it is Jared's first task as the new Prince to figure out who is behind the assassination. But nothing is as it seems, as more murders follow Anders' death, and the list of suspects grows longer but vaguer. Help comes in unexpected forms, but so does danger...

This book is told from several different perspectives, including that of Jared, Asta, Axel, Michael, Koel, and others. Some are minor characters whose perspectives we only see once, but others, like Jared and Asta, we see time and time again. There are many, many characters in this book, but surprisingly, it is very easy to follow each character without getting confused.

Prince Jared is one of the protagonist, and he is surrounded by a large court. There are twelve officers who counsel him. Jared's mother the Queen, his younger brother Edvin, and his sister-in-law Silva are also close to Jared. There is Asta, the niece and apprentice of the Physician (one of the twelve of the counsel). Her role is crucial in this book, as it is her intuition and investigating skills that bring the truth to light.

This book takes place in less than a week. Actually, I think it is exactly five days. I KNOW. Five hundred pages = five days. Crazy, right? But I think it's incredible, because Somper goes into all of the ins and outs of the life of a new Prince who has the role dumped onto him, after the death of the reigning Prince. It's so amazing how intricate and detailed this book gets, from meetings to speeches to private audiences... Somper really convinces readers of what he thinks a royal's life is like, especially after the death of a royal. That was one of the things that really struck me, how well-done the tiny little details are.

The world-building is pretty great too - I love this fantasy setting. It's not too different from what you would typically think of when it comes to kings and queens and kingdoms and whatnot, but Somper has his own spin on things. This world felt very political and almost modern, but I suppose that makes sense, because even in the medieval world, politics weren't all that different from the politics of today.

The characters, as I mentioned, are many, but very easy to pick apart and follow. I love the character development of Jared - he changes a lot, in less than a week. Of course, when you're following every intimate detail of a person's life, like readers are in this book, you can very clearly see how the protagonists change. I wouldn't say that Asta, the other protagonist, changes as much. I really like her! She's very smart and inquisitive, and she is genuine. She and I are very similar, I feel.

This book is CRAZY. The politics, the scheming, the plotting, the twists and turns... I barely saw any of anything coming. I saw ONE thing happened, with Anders and the locket and the private bathhouse, but that was about the only thing that I solidly discerned. The assassin? Nope, didn't see it coming. And this is ME, the girl who usually can divine plot twists from early in the book. But that is great! It kept me on my toes. Somper really surprised me with all of the twists and curveballs, and I was always turning pages, trying to figure out what was happening.

This book wraps up well, tying up several parts of this book, but there will be more books in this series, especially after that ending. In terms of Prince Anders, things are cleared up. But there is a larger threat at hand, and it is tied to Prince Anders' assassination. YAY for more craziness! I love it.

What I Did Not Like:

At this very moment, I can't really think of anything specific that I didn't like about this book. I'm hoping to see the appearance of romance in the next book - I can see it happening between two specific characters in book one. I like that Somper is drawing it out, to develop the romance, if that's what he's doing.

Would I Recommend It:

If you like books like this, that are heavily politically driven, then this is definitely one that you should not miss. In a way, this book reminded me a little of Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers, with all the scandal and duty and plotting and scheming. I love that type of novel, but I know that not everyone does. It's very intelligent and careful and tricky, not light and filled with nonstop action. Although there was plenty of action in this book. There was also a lot of considering and puzzling. I really liked this book, and I hope that if this seems like a novel for you, that you enjoy it as well!

Rating:

4 stars. What an intriguing fantasy novel! I absolutely love novels like this - one that features a fantasy world with plenty of scheming and twists and turns and mystery. Political scandal and machinations? I'm all about that! This was such a great book. I cannot wait to read book two!

A page-turning fantasy for teen fans of feuding medieval kingdoms
By Maggie Knapp
The book marketers set the bar pretty high, with a back cover blurb that promises Game of Thrones meets Law & Order (both adult programs, I might point out), as author Justin Somper delivers a blast of medieval adventure aimed at teens. The story opens with 16-year-old Prince Jared thrown right into the thick of things when his older brother is assassinated.

There are falcons and stag-hunting and scheming parents and untrustworthy guards. I never kept the 12 different bells straight, as they rang for the Archenfield hours, but I was drawn into the medieval setting and all the crossing and double crossing that went on the various bloodlines vied for power. The battle-ready male leads are balanced by Asta, the court physician's niece, whose curiosity draws her into the plotting, where she proves an ally to Jared, and perhaps a romantic attraction. This is clearly the first book in a series, but the ending feels finished enough for the book to stand alone.

A great choice for mid-teens who like fantasy.

SOME STORIES CANNOT BE TOLD IN JUST ONE LIFETIME.
Harry August is on his deathbed. Again.
No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes.
Until now.
As Harry nears the end of his eleventh life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August," she says. "I need to send a message."
This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Harry August isn’t human. Well, that’s not quite accurate. He is human but a different sort of human from the rest of us: he was born (in the ladies’ washroom of a train station in England in 1919), he lives a certain number of years, and he dies—and then he’s born again, right back where he started, and a handful of years later his memories of his first life return. Harry is, like a few others, a kalachakra, an immortal who is constantly reborn, each time with all the memories of his previous lives. This wonderful novel, narrated by Harry, ranges back and forth in time as he recounts episodes from his various lives, but it’s all held together by a compelling mystery involving nothing less than the end of the world itself (a thousand years in the future). Beautifully written and structured, the book should be a big hit with SF fans. The pseudonymous author’s name is being kept secret, but fans of SF and fantasy authors China Mieville, Christopher Priest, and Adam Roberts might note a stylistic similarity, especially in the novel’s elegant prose. Whoever Claire North turns out to be, he or she has written a remarkable book. --David Pitt

Groundhog Day on steroids
By G.L.
(This is a spoiler-free review of an advance reading copy provided by the publisher.)

"The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August" by Claire North is a fascinating mix of "Groundhog Day" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" with some time travel thrown in for good measure.

The protagonist, Harry August, is one of the rare people who are unable to truly die: as soon as their body dies, their life starts over with the same parents, the same childhood, the same world - except this time they have a lifetime (or 15 lifetimes) of knowledge and experience to draw back on. As Harry August dies for the 11th time, a little girl warns him about the impending end of the world...

The novel is beautifully crafted: the author not only came up with a fascinating concept that's very rarely seen in science fiction, but developed it and fleshed it out to such an extent that the book's universe seems quite believable. We get glimpses of other immortals (or ouroborans, as they call themselves) and the many, many different ways they spend their endless lives. We get cautionary tales of what can happen if somebody tries introducing advanced technology centuries before its time. (Alternate history fans will love that part.) We see the best and the worst that strange immortality brings out in regular people - and how they deal with it.

The person writing under the pseudonym of Claire North, whoever he or she truly is, did a marvelous job when researching the book: as a Russian immigrant, I can attest that the chapters that take place in the USSR are absolutely believable, which isn't something I can say about a lot of books that pick exotic locales just for the fun of it.

One of the best things about this book is the witty internal narrative by the protagonist, with small hilarious quips and observations. Consider, for example, "I was out of shape, having never been in much of a shape to get out of" - or "if Pietrok-111 was a one-horse town, Pietrok-112 was the glue factory where that horse went to die." But by far the best feature of the book (at least in my opinion) is the way the narrative loops upon itself, much like the ouroboros itself - but you'll have to read it for yourself to figure it out.

This book raises many interesting philosophical questions and will keep fans of hard science fiction (or time travel fiction, for that matter) on the edge of their seats.

When the wheel of time begins to wobble...
By Peter S. Bradley
...it makes for a captivating, fascinating and thrilling read.

Harry August didn't have the best of starts in life. He was born in 1918, the bastard child of a British aristocratic family as a result when his mother - a serving girl to the family - was raped by the family scion. Then his mother died in childbirth and he was given to the family's gardener and his wife to raise. His life was commonplace and unremarkable, and his options were limited. Then, as an old man, he died, and discovered that he was a "kalachakra," one of the rare - 1 in 500,000 births - who will relive their lives over and over again.

We see Harry live his first 15 years, as he goes through the learning curve of live as a kalachakra, taking only his knowledge and experience with him from life to life, trying out new approaches to life - a major one is simply surviving World War II - and gaining more experience. After, he discovers the "Chronus Club," things become easier; the Chronus Club exists to allow other kalachakra give their younger kith a hand up, mostly by taking them out of an extended repeat of childhood and adolescence, which must be truly unbearable.

It's a good life, but there are rules. The first rule is to never let anyone know your "point of origin." Abort a kalachakra in the womb and they never exist, ever. The second rule is that the memory of a kalachakra can be wiped clean, and if it is, the kalachakra starts his next life as if it was his first life. The third rule is to never make big changes in history. Little changes can be ignored, but big changes throw the "wheel of time" off balance, it seems, and the wobbles in the wheel become greater and greater as time passes such that there might be a nuclear holocaust in 1937 engendered by the Kingdom of France's consolidation of power over Japan in 1768, or global warming might flood the world in 1969.

For the first half, the "oroboran" cycle of life, experience, death, new life, new experience - lather, rinse, repeat - is captivating. Harry tells his memories in a somewhat linear fashion, but he jumps often enough from one life to another that we begin to get a feel for the variations between lives. The stories are entertaining. I rather enjoyed Harry, and I was fascinated by the way that the story worked out the implications of people who lived a cycle .

Then, the story changes to an adventure story. The word comes down the "whisper line" of kalachakra children telling elderly kalachakra that "the world is ending sooner and sooner." Why is this the case? Harry has an idea and the cat and mouse game he plays throughout the rest of the book is riveting and honors the reader by staying within the rules of the kalachakra.

I've finally looked up the word "kalachakra," and it seems to be a Buddhist word meaning "time-wheel" or "time-cycle." This sparks an interesting insight: I'd been wondering how the kalachakra life cycle worked. Did all kalachakra live their lives in sync with each other, or could an unlucky kalachakra cycle through more lives than a longer living kalachakra? The use of the term kalachakra suggests that the author isn't simply referring to an individual cycling through his own "time-wheel" but perhaps the entire universe cycling through a "time-wheel" for everyone. This metaphysical detail is not a part of the book, but if you are the kind of person who gets taken up by "big concepts," there may not be any bigger concept.

The writing was excellent. The plotting was tight. There was humor and thrills. I believe I got far more than a fair return for my investment of time and money and I would give this book six stars if possible.

which ultimately spoiled an otherwise good idea. The ending comes a bit abrupt too
By Marc Höppner
The premise is intriguing, but the bigger issue of causality and cause & effect are largely ignored. It is difficult to reconcile questions such as "what if a person 2000 years ago decides to live a different life" with the protagonist always starting out the same way. Does history not affect the present? And why would history not change if you have to account for hundreds, thousands of "immortals" that life each iteration of their lives in a slightly different way? How can it then be that Henry's world is always the same? Thinking about the complexity of the problem, it's quite mind boggling (and frustrating, as the author ignores it).

I couldn't quite get past these problems, which ultimately spoiled an otherwise good idea. The ending comes a bit abrupt too.

Underground Airlines, by Ben Winters

Now a New York Times bestseller!
It is the present-day, and the world is as we know it: smartphones, social networking and Happy Meals. Save for one thing: the Civil War never occurred.
A gifted young black man calling himself Victor has struck a bargain with federal law enforcement, working as a bounty hunter for the US Marshall Service. He's got plenty of work. In this version of America, slavery continues in four states called "the Hard Four." On the trail of a runaway known as Jackdaw, Victor arrives in Indianapolis knowing that something isn't right--with the case file, with his work, and with the country itself.
A mystery to himself, Victor suppresses his memories of his childhood on a plantation, and works to infiltrate the local cell of a abolitionist movement called the Underground Airlines. Tracking Jackdaw through the back rooms of churches, empty parking garages, hotels, and medical offices, Victor believes he's hot on the trail. But his strange, increasingly uncanny pursuit is complicated by a boss who won't reveal the extraordinary stakes of Jackdaw's case, as well as by a heartbreaking young woman and her child who may be Victor's salvation. Victor himself may be the biggest obstacle of all--though his true self remains buried, it threatens to surface.
Victor believes himself to be a good man doing bad work, unwilling to give up the freedom he has worked so hard to earn. But in pursuing Jackdaw, Victor discovers secrets at the core of the country's arrangement with the Hard Four, secrets the government will preserve at any cost.
Underground Airlines is a ground-breaking novel, a wickedly imaginative thriller, and a story of an America that is more like our own than we'd like to believe.

"A rich noir in a terrifingly convincing alternate America. It's both beautiful and brutal. The Handmaid's Tale for Black Lives Matter."―Lauren Beukes, author of Broken Monsters and The Shining Girls

"A daring and very well constructed novel"―Booklist

"Underground Airlines is like nothing I have ever read before. I know it will be a pivot point in my reading life. Thought you'd wrestled sufficiently with the stain of Slavery? Have a seat. You'll only need the edge. By spinning a pounding thriller in a past that did not happen, Winters has somehow wrapped his hands around the catastrophe that did. This is how it might have been, I kept thinking, if history had gone that way. But the moral shock at the heart of the book: Winters's rabbit hole is not strange enough, the gulf between that and this is not wide enough. Underground Airlines does what all great speculative fiction wants to do - show the reader that Everything is possible. That's the good news and bad. The novel's many-named narrator descends from Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man - his voice is mesmeric, it comes from any corner, it can boil with savagery, sing with grace or do pretty much anything in between. Oh, and he descends from Jason Bourne as well; he has mad field skills. So does Winters. You're set down in motion on a tilted mirror and then it's turn after gripping turn - my every next hour depended on which way he went."―David Shafer, National Bestselling author of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

"Brilliantly written, terrifyingly conceived, Underground Airlines had me from the first page to the last. Many writers might have been content to set a few characters loose in the middle of the kind of powerful premise - slavery in four states never ended -put to work here, but Winters gives us gripping plot, clear-eyed social commentary and chilling implications. This may be alternate history, but what it has to say about actual, enduring race and racism cuts awfully close to the 21st century American bone."―Laird Hunt, author of Neverhome

"Smart, quick and tricky, Ben Winters knows how to pull off a high-concept thriller. Fans of The Man in the High Castle will love Underground Airlines."―Stewart O'Nan, author of The Speed Queen

"Am I allowed to curse? Because holy heck, I want to. This book is shocking, bold, sad, human and wise. Put an expletive in front of each of those adjectives. It's not post-apocalyptic fiction, but if you like that sort of thing, you'll like this too. If you liked Station Eleven (an overused but appropriate comp!), World War Z, or Brief History of the Dead, then this is a book you should read."―Rebecca Fitting, Greenlight Bookstore

"Underground Airlines is the rare book that actually fulfills the promise of being unlike anything you've ever read. The alt-world premise of a present day US where the Civil War never happened and slavery still exists in four states, is so perfect for the current dialogue about race that's going on right now. It's not that common to be reading a gripping page turner of a mystery and be thinking about voices like Ta-Nehisi Coates at the same time. It's one of those books you only want to stop reading so that you can go out and start talking to people about it. I can't wait until this book is out in the world so I can engage with other readers about it."―Robert Sindelar, Third Place Books

"Ben Winters' Underground Airlines is an ingenious speculative thriller wrapped around the core of our nation's ouroboros history of institutional racism. While that may sound bizarre to some, Winters pulls it off with ease, crafting a novel that is both fantastic and scarily believable at the same time."―Ian Kern, Mysterious Bookshop

"Ben H. Winters has crafted a timely, necessary, and gripping page-turner. The plausibility of Underground Airlines' central conceit is terrifying, made more so by the author's deft blend of alternate history and modern mundanity, but the loose, often jaunty narration of its flawed protagonist, Victor, prevents its descent into hopeless, maudlin territory. Victor's desperate pursuit of freedom or redemption, whatever the cost, propels the novel toward its inexorable and satisfying conclusion."―Jake Cumsky-Whitlock, Kramerbooks

"Underground Airlines is a work of astonishing originality and ambition. Like the best art, it forces us to question our own assumptions. Is the machine of modern civilization really that far removed from the alternate reality that Winters presents here? We're all implicated in this unsettling and visionary novel. Ben Winters is one brave writer."―Patrick Millikin, The Poisoned Pen Bookstore

"I could not put Underground Airlines down. A brutal, hard-boiled detective mystery about what might have happened if Lincoln had been killed before ending slavery, it is thought provoking and vivid. It will live with you for a very long time."―Rene Kirkpatrick, Eagle Harbor Book Co.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of July 2016: A powerful look what might have been, Ben Winters creates an alternate reality based on the absence one of our most important historical events: The Civil War. Slavery has infected the United States, permeating the everyday lives of most Americans without much thought until a group of citizens come forward to try and make a difference. This trailblazing and well thought out novel plays the role of mystery-thriller while poignantly illuminating the many ways life today is more like Winters' alternative world than we may want to admit. --Penny Mann, The Amazon Book Review

A remarkable tour-de-force
By Joseph Guglielmelli
A remarkable tour-de-force of an modern day America where slavery is still constitutionally permitted. It is an alternate history novel that belongs on the shelf along with such classics as Robert Harris' Fatherland with a protagonist that invokes such literary ancestors as Ellison's Invisible Man and Bigger Thomas.

Winters tells a cracking good detective story with twists that always fooled me and characters that were morally complex. I particularly liked that Winters shared enough of the history of this alternate America without bogging down his narrative yet left me hungry to know more (For example, what was America's role in the two world wars as the world shuns a slave owning USA?) For those looking for a thinking person's thriller for the summer, this is your book

Smart, thrilling, disturbing, engrossing.
By RWHart
I was lucky to get an early read on this book, and it is fantastic. Smart, thrilling, sometimes disturbing, always completely engrossing and beautifully written. It's one of my favorite books of this year, and I feel confident saying that even though the year is just half over.

Interesting concept
By Nia Wright
**Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

This was a far more complex book than I've read of late. The synopsis is pretty comprehensive so you have a good idea already what goes down in this book.

Victor, the main character, is a very complex and not particularly endearing personality. It's very difficult to tell whether this is part of the author's plan or if it's a lack of character development....
As a secret agent for the US marshals and a man with a horrific past, it's more than likely that he's deliberately created to be an enigma but I did find it quite hard to latch on to him as a protagonist, however, the supporting characters weren't quite developed enough to compensate for this. As someone who really enjoys character driven books, this was a bit of a challenge (though totally worth it).

It was the world building and concept of this book which makes it stand out, exploring how different the world would actually be if the Civil War hadn't happened and slavery was still considered acceptable.

The horror of this book was that the writing style was dispassionate. Victor is obviously opposed to slavery, as are a lot of the people he meets, but they all 'know' that it's not something that they can change. Slavery just is.

For me, the appeal of this story was the concept rather than the style of writing. It's thought provoking, disturbing and unlike anything I've ever read. I also can't stress enough that there wasn't anything wrong with the writing style, I just like my characters more passionate and engaging.
