Those Girls, by Lauren Saft

Some girls will always have your back, and some girls can't help but stab you in it.

Junior year, the suburbs of Philadelphia. Alex, Mollie and Veronica are those girls: They're the best of friends and the party girls of the school. But how well does everybody know them--and really, how well do they know one another? Alex is secretly in love with the boy next door and has joined a band--without telling anyone. Mollie suffers from a popular (and possibly sociopathic) boyfriend and a serious mean streak. And Veronica just wants to be loved--literally, figuratively, physically...she's not particular. Will this be the year that bonds them forever or tears them apart for good?

In a debut novel that is raw, honest, hilarious, and thought-provoking, Lauren Saft masterfully conveys what goes on in the mind of a teenage girl and how often even the closest of friends walk the thin line between love and hate.

From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up—Alexandra and Mollie have been friends for as long as they can remember. In middle school, they befriended the risqué but adorable Veronica. The three of them now attend a posh, private all-girls school. Once Mollie starts dating high school jock Sam, the dynamic of the trio changes. Alex spends more time with Drew, her platonic best friend and unrequited crush. Veronica becomes promiscuous and gets a reputation for it. Alex, the frizzy-haired rebel of the group, decides to join a band in order to pursue her musical interests and establish a separate identity for herself. As the new school year begins, Veronica throws a massive party at her often-empty house. She eventually begins an innocent flirtation with Drew, which her friends notice, and secretly hooks up with Sam on the sly as well. With two different love triangles developing, tensions mount as feelings between all invested parties threaten to break beyond repair. In this debut novel, Saft gives readers a look at the complicated relationships between high school girlfriends. The female characters she crafts are complex. Mollie is upset by Alex's decision to join a band without talking to her first, but has neglected her for years due to her tumultuous relationship with a boyfriend she doesn't even seem to like half the time. While the subject matter may seem innocuous and even vapid, the drama between the girls combined with their first-person perspectives proves to be a delightful, guilty read. VERDICT Fans of Cecily Von Ziegesar's "Gossip Girl" series will no doubt love this more nuanced story.—Ryan P. Donovan, Southborough Public Library, MA

"Those Girls spills over with secrets, backbiting, and messy, messy love. Saft doesn't back away from the ugly truths and the beautiful complexities of female friendships. She simply tells it exactly like it is."―Siobhan Vivian, author of The List

A disappointing look at teenage life.
By Judith K.
Those Girls by Lauren Saft is a disturbing look at teenage life. The three main characters, Alexandra Holbrook, Mollie Finn, and Veronica Collins all attend an exclusive girl's private school in the suburbs. They party and drink excessively and curse pretty constantly. Even the nice, intellectual boy, Drew, who attends the "brother" private school, is portrayed as a pot-head. Really? Is this necessary? Couldn't he have more creative flaws? All the girls are incredibly out of touch with their feelings. For example, Alex convinces Veronica to date Drew and then gets upset when they form attachments to each other. Alex is supposed to be unselfish, and caring about everyone, but I didn't get this from the story. Mollie is worried about her weight and has a boyfriend, Sam, who is the true embodiment of the phrase "male chauvanist pig." What the girls see in this boy, is beyond me. Veronica, who is practically raped by Sam, continues to have sex with him ,even during her relationship with Drew. Poor Veronica is searching for true friendship and love, but goes about it all wrong. She drinks excessively and is promiscuous. Her parents are never around. This brings me to the parents of these girls. The parents set no limits for the girls. They drink, smoke pot and cigarettes, party and do as they please. They do not have any type of relationships with their parents. Actually, I wondered where social services were in the case of Veronica. Her parents were actually physically out of the country, not just emotionally disconnected as the other parents were. The girls are mean to each other and do not seem like true, caring friends. If this is "realistic" fiction, I would rather read fantasy. Don't waste your time and money on this book.

Mollie and Veronica are best friends or more like appear to be but someone ...
By Bookworm
I received this free in an exchange for an honest review

I am not sure what to think of this book to be honest. Alex, Mollie and Veronica are best friends or more like appear to be but someone is jealous or envious of one another for some reason. If it is not that then either one of them are complaining about something and normally its against one another. Mollie starves herself because she has some of kind eating disorder and is jealous of how Veronica is always looking pefect and flirting with every guy she meets, she basically calls her 'slut' and 'whore' like what??? Alex is fed up with everything and joins a band without telling anyone, both Mollie and Veronica are shocked, they shrug it off first thinking she is not serious. Vernoica always feel abandoned after the summer holidays feeling like she always has prove herself all over again.

I really don't understand what each of these girls problems are, like why don't they just tell each other the truth? I feel like whatever they say its just a lie and their friendship is set on lies, lies, lies and more lies. Eventually when they do, it is a total chaos and more misunderstandings take place. Like seriously? I don't even want to think this is what is happening at schools currently. I suppose it was a good read in terms of morality and how one should treat their friends. Glad they could sort everything out in the end.

NOT a YA book!
By Amber Goleb
This is one of those reviews that I wouldn't normally post publically. I normally just send low star reviews to the authors, but I have my reasons for this one.

When I downloaded this book, I had the intention of reading it then eventually passing it along to my teenage daughter... I mean, this book is labeled at YA. It was published by Little Brown Books for Young Readers... WHY???? WHY????

This book is NOT for young readers. Not even close! So if you are looking to purchase this for your young reader, I wouldn't suggest it!

This book is full of sex, drugs and drinking. I really didn't expect to get so much of the drinking, the sex and the drugs. This is about three out of control teenage girls who will do anything to get what they want. This isn't a true depiction of teenagers. Between the non-friendship these three have and their behavior, this isn't something I would want anyone under 21 reading.

There really isn't a lot to this story other than what I have mentioned already. Unfortunately this isn't a book I would really recommend to anyone I know.
