Grade 3-8-Those tempted to correct the apostrophe in the title should be warned that it is the first of many jokes Tripp will play on his readers, for it alludes to the red spots on Rose the pig in a poem by Tripp himself. Also included are two entries by Edward Lear, the full text of Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky," Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Excelsior," and seven other silly selections. While younger readers will enjoy the antics of Tripp's menagerie of cartoon characters and the nonsense of the poems, older readers will best appreciate all of the allusions and visual jokes the artist has added to his work. Thus, when Lear's "There Was an Old Person of Ware" ends with a "Moppsikon Floppsikon bear," observant readers are sure to be amused by the illustration of a bear on a motorcycle, followed by a strangely familiar rabbit in a blue coat and three small bunnies, clearly Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail. The beach upon which the intrepid young man lands to find the Jabberwock is peopled with the March hare, dodo, and Cheshire cat, of Carroll's Wonderland, as well as a sand-carved bust of Queen Victoria. Sly wordplay is scattered throughout the book. A boat off in the ocean in the same scene is named "Liddle Women" and a tiny cottage is labeled "The Winkle in Thyme." Like Tripp's Granfa' Grigg Had a Pig (Little, Brown, 1976; o.p.) and Marguerite, Go Wash Your Feet (Houghton, 1985; o.p.), this collection will appeal to lovers of both verbal and visual nonsense.

Hurrah for Wallace Tripp! Not only is this veteran illustrator a virtuoso draftsman, but his sprightly pictures can always be counted on both to entertain the listener and to provide delightfully unexpected visual interpretations of the words they accompany. The nonsense verse of the book's title (no, there is no typographical error) will never be the same again after Tripp's daffy rendition, and his convincing portraits of Lewis Carroll's "slithy tove" and "Jabberwocky" are nothing short of masterful. Tripp's witty pictures reward close attention and are probably best appreciated by children over the age of five (such listeners and readers who can appreciate such gratuitous embellishments as the small sign which appears in Jabberwocky: "Please, no gambling in the wading pool"). Tripp's verse selections, too, are sophisticated and often unfamiliar-from Gertrude Stein to Artemis Ward. Certainly adults will enjoy it just as much as their kids. (Selma G. A nice little collection of verses, but I wanted the book for the artwork. I'm very fond of Wallace Tripp's clever pictures!
