Redfield and Lillegard spoon-feed the message of The Celestine Prophecy to a younger audience in this overbearing picture book. Lillegard's lumbering, aggrandized verse ("Celestine was filled, filled full/ with energy!/ Celestine was thrilled, thrilled through/ with energy!") relates the journey of young Celestine, who loses his way in the woods and ends up on a quest for life's deeper meaning. "Swirled and set in a strange, medieval world," he witnesses wars, wanders into a flower-filled field, fights a warrior to keep his "energy" and is finally told to go home by a flock of butterflies (and led by a deer), all the while pondering such platitudes as "Pay attention?now and to the past," "Love," "Dream," "Share," "Rejoice." There's not enough of a story here to engage the attention of young readers, nor are they likely to grasp the cloaked meaning (e.g., some readers may suspect the "warrior" plays a larger role, but never discover what that might be). Conversely, Morrissey's (The Great Kettles) gleaming oil paintings, with their painstaking detail, masterful use of light and deep, saturated colors, remain grounded in reality, with a delicate hint of spiritual forces at work (e.g., a swirling path of moon and stars). His artwork?which, particularly in the still-life scenes, recalls the works of the Dutch masters?plants the seeds for Celestine's epiphany, showing a glimpse of the boy's room in an early scene, with all the elements (flowers, a butterfly, blocks that spell out "home") foreshadowed. Yet even the stellar artwork is not enough to hoist this book out of its pompous mire. All ages.

PreSchool-Grade 2-Celestine, a neat kid undaunted by being dressed in a jerkin and toting a lute, is having a bad day. Feeling "unloved, unheard, unseen" makes him "cold, afraid, alone." Out of the blue, some leaves, ants, a door, clouds, and a shadow spell out bits and pieces of a life-changing message: "'Pay attention-now and to the past./To flowers. To faces.' He was home at last./And the choir sang in a single voice,/'Love. Dream. Share. Rejoice!'" That's it, folks. The text mentions struggle, a warrior, a fight-but all readers ever see is the tousle-haired cherub posing amiably with some quasi-medieval props. This sweet message has been very successful for James Redfield in his adult book The Celestine Prophecy, and this decorative volume is likely to be cherished by parents looking for insights on the most uncontroversial level. Who could argue, even if it's in doggerel, when the hero, painted in superrealistic oils on canvas, is so photogenic? Like him, this book will never be alone-it will fly off library shelves into the spiritual vacuum out there.

Spirituality for Kids

The Song of Celestine is the perfect primer for teaching young kids the lessons and meaning of sprituality. I love this book for a number of reasons:The rhyming of the words makes it fun to read to children, the lessons presented in the book follow the teachings of theCelestine Prophecy series but bring it down to a level that children can understand and are interested in learning, and the oil paintings on each page are fabulous and exquisite! There is a perfect marriage of visual, written and emotional balance in this book that has fascinated my kids. The Song of Celestine is one of their bedtime favourites! The depth of conversation that ensues from this book has satisfied me that they are interested in spirituality and this book is the perfect way to teach! I hope you enjoy it as much as we have!

The Song of Celestine

This is a must have children's picturebook! The story is written for a child to enjoy but, has the depth to appeal to an adult.
A young boy (Celestine), sets out on an adventure, but looses his sense of "direction" along the way; the story takes on doubble meanings as it depicts the physical struggle of being lost in the woods & the inner struggles of loosing one's sense of self. It is the values from Celestine's upbringing that help him find his way "home" both in the physical and spiritual sense.
The story is enhanced by the absolutely breathtaking art work of Dean Morrissey, who captures the very essence of childhood with trinkets, nature, and magical settings painted with such realism the pages look like photographs from an art gallery. Your child will cherish this book for many years!

Have not read this title, but ...

I have continued to keep the 2nd edition close by at work. The authors have put maximum in minimum of words, concise and truly useful from a trainee's point. The articles are brife, and yet complete and pictures are highly illustrative. With extensive new information added to the field of nephrology every day, a new edition of this masterpiece is sorely needed. I will wait for the new edition to hit the bookshelves. Do the authors have any such plans?

A masterpiece in nephrology

I am familiar with both first edition (spiral series) and 2nd edition (Rose and Black's) of this book. This is indeed a masterpiece in nephrology. It is good for both residents and renal fellows, as well as for all nephrologists in private practice and in academia. I highly recommend it. The only current problem is that 1996 is the last edition. I hope that the authors publish their next edition not later than early 2001.

A wonderful well done book for an impatient person.

I believe I purchased this about the same time as I ordered my feeders from Aspects and I am very glad I did ! I am a person who reads for information so I want answers right away ! This book is well organized with lots of info that is easily accessed. It let me know that it could be awhile before I get to see my little "flying jewels" & the reasons why. If you enjoy hummingbirds & want to make the most of the area you have (no matter what size) this explains all the options. I got my first "hummer" exactly 3 weeks after putting up my first feeders. This answered every question I had & is affordable. Hope you enjoy it too.

A great book for anyone who wants to attract and feed hummingbirds, it's packed with all the basic information you'll need, starting with choosing the right feeder for your area, the sugar solution to put in it, and the maintenance and cleaning of it, which the Stokes say: "We can't emphasize enough how important it is to take feeder maintenance seriously", as any mold or bacteria can be "risking the health, and possibly the lives", of these jeweled wonders of the bird family...and they show you the easy steps to be taken to keep the feeders clean.
There are also 6 pages on orioles, who can be seen sometimes at hummer feeders. It gives a "quick guide" to 8 species of these beautiful birds, with lovely photos to help identification. It also shows how one can set up feeders specifically for orioles, and the sugar solution to use, which is slightly different from that of the hummer mixture.
Chapters on the "Hummingbird Habitat" and "Gardening", give you a list of plants and flowers that hummers like the most, by geographical region. "Amazing Facts" truly is amazing. Among the many fascinating things you'll learn is that their heart can beat 1,260 times per minute, but can sometimes slow down to 50 beats per minute at night to conserve energy. There are other chapters on "Myths", "Baby Hummingbirds", and "Photographing Hummingbirds".
Nearly half the book is devoted to the identification of the different species, with photos, maps, behaviour patterns, and much more. Once you've identified your visitors, you'll get to know the idiosyncrasies of the species, and it's sure to add to the joy and delight of watching these miraculous little creatures.

Plagiarism of the worst sort

There are plenty of good sentences in this book, but they're all the work of other writers. The author must be seriously disturbed; he quite deliberately stole everything in the book. And no, it's not an homage, not a tribute album. It's theft, and quite transparent; it should be off-sale by now, but it may take Amazon a while to take it down. The author, it turns out, has made a habit of this sort of thing throughout his "career." Let us not encourage him.

A good place to start

I had the chance to work under Dr. Michael Charney for 5 years before his death. Dr. Charney focused heavily on education and teaching people. That is what this book does. When this book came out he gave me a hard time for buying a copy because it was a "kid's book". All of that aside, the book gives a basic introduction to forensic anthropology on a level that explains it to the reader. It covers the case from start to finish as well as touching on the other aspects of forensic investigation such as forensic entomology and facial reconstruction. So if you have a child that is wanting to learn more about the field or you are looking for a good place to start learning, this is the book to get.

I read this book for a sixth grade nonfiction reading assignment.

It explains how forensic anthropologists help police solve crimes by studying the bones of victims. It also describes how Dr. Michael Charney of the Forensic Science Laboratory at Colorado State University helped identify bones found at a Boy Scout camp in Missouri in 1988.

I thought the book was very interesting. If you like shows like Law & Order and CSI or if you like to read mysteries, then you might like The Bone Detectives.
