Early DS9 and Voyager seasons in depth

This Captain's Log follows on from the original book detailing all of the original series, The original crew movies and TNG up to the end of season 5. This new book features DS9's first four seasons and Voyager's first two in more detail than the earlier work and is one of the few insights available into these shows. The authors aren't known as these series' greatest fans but they don't let it show and its a credit to them that you neither feel this is a studio puff piece nor a poison review book. It's objective, and that's something few Trek non-fiction books have. What's refeshing is the writers are interviewed more than in most publications so you get an insight as to how they perceived their work. Stories you or I may have liked aren't always the ones they are most proud of and vice versa. A must for anyone interested in Star Trek as a whole or just wishing to re-evaluate their stance on the 'younger' shows.

The Expanse is Still Great

The Expanse series has been going on for a while, and with a new frontier open for exploration, readers may be wondering where the story will head next. The answer is home. In the fifth book of the series, Nemesis Games splits up the crew of the Rocinante as they all head to their respective homes. Oddly enough, the separation is the driving force of the novel. The authors push readers to the edge of their seat as they leave you wondering if the crew will ever see each other again. Of course that’s not the only thing going on in the galaxy.

Beyond the crew’s separation anxiety, the powers of Earth, Mars and the Outer Planetary Alliance (OPA) once again find themselves in a make or break situation. This time it’s not an alien weapon threatening destruction. Instead, it’s a radical terrorist group bent on causing so much devastation that everyone will have to stop and take notice of them. While that might sound ordinary or boring, this is a setting where people can travel to other planets. There are entire societies of people who have never set foot on an actual world. Furthermore, it’s a time of colonization and shifting balances of power. The story of humanity is at a crux, a delicate point of transition that could lead to untold evolution or massive self-destruction. In a setting like that, terrorists become something quite different than what we usually think of.

Yet as interesting as that angle of the story is, it’s really only the backdrop for what actually happens. Alex goes to Mars to see his ex-wife. Amos goes to Earth to pay his respects to the only family he’s had. Naomi goes to the Belt to help old friends. Holden is the only one that doesn’t go home. Instead, he stays on Tycho Station with Fred, the leader of the OPA, and his ship, the Rocinante, which might very well be what he now considers home. However he comes to realize it’s not home without its crew, which has also become his family. That in itself is the heart of the story. It goes to great lengths to show readers how much the characters depend on each other. How together they are so much more than their individual selves. Yet the separation allows the authors to explore each character in detail. Who are these people really? It’s an interesting question, and a fun one to explore. Nemesis Games does just that.

If you’re a fan of The Expanse series, the good news is James S.A. Corey have not lost their touch. This is a great, engrossing read that will leave you tense and nervous as the characters are put in peril. They shine like never before. The changes in the galaxy set things up for the next book, but this one will leave you content enough in knowing there will be more. While there are a lot of great spoilers to be had, the fun is in discovering them for yourself in the story. Suffice to say, this one earns a five out of five.

The Corporatization of Fiction Writing

I love the way these guys write. I know that they are stringing readers along and are milking this series for all it's worth, but I don't care. They create a realistic world with true character development--in Nemesis Games, we finally get to know the back stories of Alex, Amos, and Naomi, and Corey makes a villain from a previous volume somewhat sympathetic. The future world is simultaneously optimistic and dystopic. After discovery of the true nature of the Ring and what it has to offer in previous entries, it was hard to imagine anyone being harmed by the endless opportunities created by the Ring. Yet, Corey not only fabricates a plausible reason for opposition, but also a truly villainous plot. Although the story arc is rather unbelievable at times, it does set up well for future entries in this space soap opera.

Specifics about the book (I will avoid spoilers as much as possible): the first half of the book is rather boring and action free. Alex has a few squirmishes that reinforces his bona fides as a bad--ss and the book starts with a mysterious strike on a shipyard that doesn't get explain until 200+ pages later. But the rest of the first half is really all setup and explanation of who the characters are. I have to admit that I put the book down and started reading the Divergent Series, which is an interesting story, but the narrative writing style struck me as freshman HS creative-writing level compared to the crisp narrative of the Expanse series. When I couldn't take anymore of Divergent, I came back to Nemesis Games with a new-found appreciation for the high quality writing of Corey. I really felt like I was on a rapidly depopulating Mars and a decaying overpopulated Earth with many of the same vices and urban problems that hinder us today. Corey's detailed description of these environments, while tedious at time, really brought the varied locations to life.

The work to get through the background--which was tolerable, again, because of the quality of writing and the insights into the rest of the crew--was worth the investment because the action that followed was truly nail-bitter quality. Of course coming down to the final chapters, I began to realize that there was going to be no resolution in this novel. To learn more, I'd have to invest in yet another entry in this series.

Therefore, if you have read the Expanse series to this point, I can recommend Nemesis Games. The criticisms are the large amount of time spent explaining the crew's backstories--which, I believe is worth it to any fan of the series--and the lack of resolution at the end. However, if you are just starting, I recommend starting with the first book in the series, or skipping to the middle of NG. Alternatively if you have read the first 4 books in the series (I lose count, I think this is the fifth), you might consider stopping. The pre-Nemesis Games books are self-contained and provide a nice resolution. You can simply imagine the crew of the Rocinante flying off into the sunset and enjoying the rest of their lives in peace.

As for me, I guess I'm hooked. Corey (the authors who write under this pseudonym) has made the Expanse into a corporate industry, which if they continue the quality of writing, the series can continue indefinitely. For me, as long as the writing is there, I will likely continue flying with the crew of the Rocinante.

To new Frontiers

Great series, great characters, it doesn't always move at a good pace, but normally it does maintain a certain on average story development.

I look forward to seeing where the authors take this work, so far they have focused on humanity's journey to new frontiers, but they haven't focused on any alien technology that' the characters have encountered. Like space travel still takes time, etc... they haven't pirated any alien technology so far in any shape or form, that I can tell. (although their is something related to the earlier books where some "experimentation" takes place...) but that is obviously not what I am referring to when I say pirating technology. I mean reverse engineer.

I can honestly say these two authors have spoiled me story wise. I love to read, but whenever I finish up one of these books, I go to read something else, and its always like its lacking.. it's like this book is your favorite food.. and then when you go to read another series.. its like, well its edible. *shrug*

Definitely happy with my purchase. Well worth the money to me. Again look forward to future works, and I honestly hope we get to see more character growth, but not only that.. but technological growth in the story/series.

Part biography of a beloved teacher and father, part memoir, the book's central character, music teacher Jerry Mr. K Kupchynsky, looms larger than life on the page—just as he did for journalist Lipman, one of Mr. K's violists, and Melanie, his elder daughter, now a violinist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His teaching methods are extreme—cracking the knuckle on a student's thumb to emphasize correct finger placement—but glimpses of his family life soften his image. We learn about how Mr. K fled from both Nazis and Soviets in his native Ukraine during WWII, and about the stress he endured later in life when his wife was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The authors provide intimate details from their lives as well. Central to the book is Melanie's relationship with her younger sister, Stephanie. Lipman and Kupchynsky played together in a string quartet organized by Mr. K, of which Stephanie was also a part. In 1991, Stephanie disappeared from her apartment in upstate New York. About the Author
Joanne Lipman is one of the nation's most prominent journalists and commentators. She founded and was Editor-in-Chief of the National Magazine Award-winning Condé Nast Portfolio, and was deputy managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, where she supervised coverage that earned three Pulitzer Prizes. She advises news and media organizations such as CNN, Yahoo!, and New York Public Radio, and she has appeared as a commentator on CNN, CBS, and NBC among others. Her work has also appeared in publications including The New York Times and Newsweek. She and her family live in New York City.

Melanie Kupchynsky has been a violinist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for more than twenty years, during which time the symphony has won twenty-one Grammys. She began studying violin at the age of four with her father, Jerry "Mr. K" Kupchynsky. Melanie began her career with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra under the direction of John Williams. With the Chicago Symphony Orchestra she has performed around the globe under the world's greatest conductors and with the world's most prominent soloists. She is also an active chamber musician, and she is a participant in the CSO's Citizen Musician community outreach program. She and her family live near Chicago.

Meet a Tough Love Teacher

Strings Attached was personal and emotional for me on two levels: first, as a young music student faced with teachers who held their rulers above my knuckles as I struggled to learn to play piano, and second, as a lover of classical music. Some teachers instilled in me the love of the classics but also my father loved them and played them often on Saturday mornings on an old Stromberg-Carlson phonograph. Both my father and my music teachers are all held lovingly in my memory as the roots of my musical life.

Strings Attached has received great advance reviews, and I join them here in saying that this book is a must read. And it isn't written only for musicians or lovers of music -- anyone with heart and a love of humanity will enjoy this book.

Within its pages, you meet Jerry Kupchynsky, a Ukrainian immigrant who came to the United States in search of a future, something better than he had lived through in the Ukraine. The layers of his life began in Ukraine and the multitude of layers grew -- birth in the Ukraine near the start of the Holodomor and a tragic childhood as a result, strength of character, perseverance, incredible work ethic, a love of music and family, and unimaginable joy. Yes, joy! Mr. K, as his students called him, was a ball of fire, an unfathomable level of energy passion for teaching, his students, and once again the music.

Mr. K's teaching style was one of high expectations, rules, and often impatience, but always with love. His use in dialogue of musical terms or anywhere the authors use musical terminology they have done so in layman's terms so as not to interrupt the flow of the text.

In re-enacting teaching sessions with Mr. K and his students, Lipman and Kupchynsky have cleverly adopted Mr. K's Ukrainian accent with his humorous remarks (some might call them insults) made to his students. I could not help but laugh at"Cellos sound like hippopotamus rising from mud at bottom of reever!" and "Who eez deaf in first violins?" Turn the page and you find him offering praise and wisdom that students carried with them for a lifetime ("you can't teach children an instrument and then hide them in a hole").

Lipman and Kupchynsky's memories and views segue back and forth easily and often seamlessly. Newspaper clippings and photographs accompany portions of the narrative as tribute is given to a man who made a lasting and loving impact on the lives of those he touched and taught.

My Recommendation:

Everyone should read this book. It gives hope that another Jerry Kupchynsky will rise among our educators.

"You'll thank me later."

In "Strings Attached," by Joanne Lipman and Melanie Kupchynsky, the authors movingly describe what it was like growing up in the sixties and seventies and learning about music and self-discipline. Their teacher was Melanie's Ukranian-born father, Jerry Kupchynsky, who was known as Mr. K by the students he taught in East Brunswick, New Jersey. Joanne began taking viola lessons when she was ten and eventually went on to pursue a stellar career in journalism. Melanie, Jerry's daughter, is a professional violinist who has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1989. When Joanne was eleven, she and Melanie became members of a string quartet that included Melanie's friend, Miriam, on cello, and her sister, Stephanie, on violin.

Mr. K did not merely teach boys and girls how to play stringed instruments. He hollered, poked, prodded, and nagged. He insisted that his students practice for countless hours until they met his high standards. Many of Mr. K's students were selected to play in county, state, and regional orchestras and, as adults, some emulated Mr. K and became music teachers themselves. All of them learned to work together harmoniously with their fellow musicians. When Joanne was a child, she remembers that her parents approved of Mr. K's methods. Although he lacked tact and finesse, he achieved terrific results. Lipman says, "He yelled [at us] not because we'd never learn, but because he was absolutely certain that we would," and adds, "He made us better than we had any right to be." Today, it is likely that he would be condemned, if not fired, for being far too harsh and demanding.

The co-authors say in the book's foreword that for those "raised on a steady diet of praise and trophies--a little toughness goes an awfully long way." The kids who studied with Mr. K endured a trial by fire that made them more resilient and better prepared to face reality and meet future challenges. He would have his students play "Again!" and "Again!" until he would finally yell out "That's eet!" in his heavy Ukrainian accent. The words "Not bad!" from him were high praise indeed. However, it was not Mr. K's forceful personality and perfectionism alone that made him such an effective teacher. It was obvious how much he cared. Music and education were his twin passions. He strove above all to instill in his protégés a lifelong appreciation of classical music as well as an enthusiasm for excellence. He also encouraged responsibility and compassion; his performers regularly visited nursing homes and hospitals to entertain and socialize with the elderly and infirm. As Lipman wrote in a 2010 New York Times article after she learned of Mr. K's passing, "The legacy he left behind was pure joy."

Kupchynsky was a dynamo who seemed to be indefatigable. Few people were aware of the many obstacles that he had to overcome throughout his life; he bore misfortune uncomplainingly and with dignity. Joanne and Melanie reveal that Jerry Kupchynsky was a man of multiple dimensions: a martinet, loving family man, avid hiker, mountain climber, poet, patriot, and dedicated educator. The fact that, after he succumbed to a long illness, the concert played in Mr. K's memory was packed with former students and colleagues, many of whom had not laid eyes on him for decades, is a testament to the tremendous influence he had on those who knew him. This thought-provoking work of non-fiction, besides being a poignant memoir and tribute to a unique and unforgettable individual is, in addition, a celebration of the power of great music to bring people together and immeasurably enrich their lives.

A Must Read

Long before the world heard of "Tiger Moms", there was Mr. K. Before "No Child Left Behind", there was Mr K. And before Jaime Escalante, there was Mr K. A man who believed that every child could succeed if they worked hard enough. A teacher who did not reward mere attempts or give faint praise. A man who knew that failure was a critical part of learning and that students grew by overcoming their failures. A man who inspired his students to work harder than they ever thought possible, simply to hear the words "not bad". An educator who knew that success was its own reward and devoted himself to his students success. Now we call it "tough love". Back then, it was just Mr K.

Told alternately by his daughter, Melanie, and one of his former students, Joanne Lipman, Strings Attached is a loving, poignant, honest, often humorous portrait of the life of a teacher who survived multiple tragedies and who taught his students not only music, but also confidence, poise and how to succeed in life.

Strings Attached is a must for teachers, parents, and even students. But if nothing else, it is a darn good read.

This newest addition to the Stokes series offers beginners information on attracting birds to their property. Most of the book gives practical ideas on enhancing one's current yard, such as adding water attractions at different levels and increasing natural and artificial nest cavities. Lists of recommended trees, shrubs, and flowers are included but are not illustrated or as detailed as those in Stephen W. Kress's The Bird Garden (LJ 12/95). A third of the book is devoted to describing 103 bird species typically attracted to backyards and includes a color photograph with a description of habitat, food, and nesting requirements?information found in many similar books. Those who are well read on this subject will not find much new here, but the Stokeses are respected authorities with a PBS television show, and this reasonably priced title may be in demand. The Stokeses, authors of 21 previous bird and nature books, offer bird-watchers and gardeners a basic guide to attracting birds. They begin with a chapter on planning and planting such a garden, reminding readers of the birds' four needs: food, water, nesting sites, and shelter (from rain, snow, sun, wind, and predators). The authors list flowers, shrubs, vines, and trees that attract birds, and they explain how to create a hummingbird garden. There is a chapter on eight easy things to do that will attract birds (for instance, creating a brush pile, letting dead trees stand, and providing nesting material in the spring) and one on "bird-friendly" lawns. Other chapters deal with bird feeders, birdhouses, birdbaths, ponds, and pools. The book also offers a list of 103 species of birds, describing their habitat, feeding, and nesting needs. The text is augmented by 170 color photographs, maps, and charts. George Cohen

I hate to say anything bad about the Stokes, but...

This book was a disappointment. I think it represents a classic example of a publisher using established authors' names to crank out a nice looking book that contains very little in the way of useful information.
The book has only 95 numbered pages to begin with. The first five of those are -- get this -- the title page, a page listing other Stokes publications, another title page. the publisher's information page, and the table of contents.
Okay. That leaves 90 pages for content, right?
Not really. The last 31 pages are given over entirely to glossy, full color bird identication photos. And approximately one third of the remaining pages are also devoted to pretty bird photographs. The book is almost entirely "boiler plate", in other words. What content there is is fine -- there just isn't much of it.
If information is what you want, get _The Bird Garden_ by Stephen Kress (The Nation Audubon Society) instead. It's much better.

Great for beginners

This book is a wonderful starting point to help you learn about bird gardening. It starts with the four basic needs and then explains in a clear and simple fashion how to meet these basic needs, as well as other considerations. The book also has a small picture glossary of the most common birds and their "bio". This book is very well written, has charts that are easy to follow, full of gorgeous color photographs, and though they keep it short, it's crammed with helpful info!

As with other Stokes books, this one is quite a good reference. Lots of nsights in attracting wildlife, specifics on prefered plants, etc. A good book to have on hand when landscaping or planting new gardens.

Daniel Bergner is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and the author of a novel, Moments of Favor, and four books of nonfiction: What Do Women Want?, The Other Side of Desire, In the Land of the Magic Soldiers, and God of the Rodeo. In the Land of Magic Soldiers received an Overseas Press Club Award for international reporting and a Lettre-Ulysses Award for the Art of Reportage and was named a Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year. God of the Rodeo was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. In addition to the New York Times Magazine, Daniel's writing has appeared in the Atlantic, Granta, Harper's, Mother Jones, Talk, and the New York Times Book Review, and on the op-ed page of the New York Times. Brave, bravura story

What a story! Thoroughly researched and sensitively told. Virginians should read this for insight into how our Commonwealth cares for vulnerable kids. Teachers should read this for reminders of how they change lives. Young musicians should read this to learn how hard work can turn talent into a career. Bergner's prose is a little purple in the first chapters. Ryan Speedo Green bravely lays out all the hard facts of his life, and in doing so, will help generations to come. Buy it now. Everyone will be reading it.

An Inspiring True Story of Hope, Hard Work, and Gratitude for Devoted Teachers!!

Ten cheers for Ryan Speedo Green and his commitment to overcome the tremendous obstacles in his childhood!!

Opera Houses: please hire your singers on the basis of their vocal talents - not skin color. Opera stage make-up is SO exaggerated that skin color is simply not a relevant visual factor. Check out Google photos of Mr. Green in full costume and make-up to see evidence of that.

Loved this book! I am not a knowledgeable opera fan, but the quality of the investigative journalism really made this biography gripping, informative, and inspirational. It taught me a lot about the level of talent, knowledge of languages and culture, and total dedication required to support the gift of an opera-quality voice. Mr. Green's personal story is a triumph over deep poverty and institutional racism. Thank goodness for the handful of amazingly devoted, gifted teachers and vocal coaches who guided him along his journey.

In this year of violent terrorist events, deeply disturbing political campaigns, and on-going institutional racism, this story of hard work and artistic excellence lifts and inspires. Thank you Mr. Green. And thank you Mr. Bergner for telling this story so well.

Ryan's (well told story) is Required Reading

Hang onto Bergner's coattails as he marches the reader through Ryan's dysfunctional family life - no, it was worse than dysfunctional, his penchant for violence, his core desire to be "not what I am," his good fortune to have the right people nearby when needed, and finally his nurturing at the MET.

For those who love opera - as I - this behind the scenes tale of preparation for performance is most revealing.

Best of all, Speedo is coming to San Antonio to sing Escamillo in Carmen very soon. Can't wait to meet him and HEAR HIM SING.
