Walk, talk, and dress like an Egyptian.
When Louise Lambert tries on a lavender Grecian gown during a visit to the mysterious Traveling Fashionista Vintage Sale, she feels a familiar tug and falls back in time, arriving at the dusty base of an enormous pyramid. She has landed in ancient Egypt...or has she?
It turns out that Louise is on the legendary Old Hollywood film set of Cleopatra, but her time there is short-lived. Rummaging through the wardrobe tent, Louise gets her hands on a pearl necklace that dates back to 51 BC, and she suddenly finds herself whisked away once more, this time to the ancient city of Alexandria, Egypt. Gold and jewels shimmer in the Egyptian sunlight, but poisonous snakes and dangerous enemies also roam the palace halls. Louise quickly learns that life as a handmaiden to Queen Cleopatra is much more treacherous--and fashionable--than she ever could have imagined.

Gr 5–8—Calling all fashionistas! Fans of this series and those new to it will enjoy this installment, which takes 12-year-old Louise Lambert to the land of the pyramids. Louise, a devoted fan of vintage clothing, is excited about finding the perfect dress for an upcoming party to welcome her crush and his family to town. Followers of the series know better than to believe that a trip to the Traveling Fashionista Vintage Sale will end simply with a great outfit. When Louise tries on a Grecian frock, she is transported first to the set of her favorite classic movie, Cleopatra. It is from there that her adventure truly begins with the discovery of a pearl necklace. When she tries it on, she finds herself in ancient Alexandria as a servant to Cleopatra. Here, instead of worrying about her next history exam, she worries about helping the famed queen evade sinister murder plots. Can Louise keep history as is it should be and return to her present-day life unharmed? Turetsky blends history with fashion and the normal happenings of a seventh grader seamlessly, making Louise's adventures intriguing and even believable. The beautiful, full-color illustrations of the fashion pieces are woven into the book and bring the story to life. Readers will be hard pressed not to want to learn more about Cleopatra after finishing this story and will anxiously wait to see where Louise's sartorial choices will take her next.—Betsy Davidson, Cortland Free Library, NY

Time traveling fun!
By Manga Maniac Cafe
I enjoyed Louise’s first adventures as a Time-Traveling Fashionista, so when I was offered the opportunity to revisit her, I jumped at the chance. This is the third book in the series, and this time, Louise is going to Ancient Egypt! How could I possibly resist?
Louise’s personal life has gotten more complicated. Her father has been laid off, and her mother is avoiding her. Louise suspects that, like her, she’s a traveling fashionista. Every time so tries to broach the subject with her, her mother develops a migraine or abruptly changes the subject. Her bff’s cousin, Peter, reminds her of Pierre, her gardener crush from her travels to France, and Todd is sending her mixed signals. Worse, yet, Brooke never has time for her because of her new boyfriend, Kip. Why is it so hard for a vintage fashion loving, junior high student to keep it all together?
When Louise goes shopping at Marla and Glenda’s magic vintage shop, she ends up traveling back in time again – to the set of Elizabeth Taylor’s massively over budget and far behind deadline film Cleopatra. Louise is in awe. She is the assistant to the costume designer, and Elizabeth Taylor is going to be transformed into the Egyptian queen right in front of her! But then Louise does something really, really stupid, and she ends up in Ancient Egypt – for real!!
Louise isn’t happy to be in this dangerous time period. Number one, she’s one of Cleopatra’s handmaidens, and she’s not used to performing so many arduous tasks. Number two – it seems like everyone is out to get the queen! The palace politics are scaring the heck out of her, there’s a civil uprising brewing, and people are dropping dead like flies. Louise’s heart can’t take it! She just wants to go back home, where it’s safe. Why, why, why did she open that trunk that clearly said DON’T TOUCH and take that necklace?!
The Time-Traveling Fashionista and Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile is a very fast, very fun read. Louise learns first hand that there are consequences to her actions, and they aren’t always pleasant. She also gets a taste of how good she has it back in her own time. Being Charmain is no fun! She is exposed to one danger after another, and worse, she has to sleep on a tiger pelt, on the floor of Cleopatra’s bed chamber. Her job? To make sure no one sneaks in during the night to kill them both! Her nerves are pretty much frayed during her time with the queen, but she also learns the importance of self-assurance. Cleopatra isn’t the most beautiful girl in the realm, but her commanding presence makes her seem like she is. She is intelligent and dedicated to her people. She demands that people pay attention to her. Louise realizes then that she doesn’t have to be the prettiest girl around to earn the respect of those around her. It’s hard being twelve, when she has such unique taste in clothes, while all of her peers are struggling to look the same and fit in. While Louise loves her vintage look, she doesn’t have the confidence to go all out at school. Her time in Ancient Egypt shows her that there are more important things than looks.
The Time-Traveling Fashionista series is a fun blend of fashion and history. Louise, with all of her insecurities, is very relatable, even for adults. Her adventures are told in rapid, breezy prose, and while events threatened to explode out of control in this volume, nothing got too harrowing for Louise to handle, and she even managed to develop a better sense of self and a closer relationship with her mother. Great pick for chilly afternoon inside.

A great introduction both fashion design and history
By Fire and Ice
The Time- Traveling Fashionista series is one of my favorite historical fiction reads for middle grade readers. First of all, if you haven't read books one and two they need to be added to your list of TBRs. They take vintage fashion, time travel and suspense and roll it into an easily readable adventure perfect for tweens. We've already been aboard the Titanic, to France during the time of Marie Antionette, and in book three we are whisked to a film set with Elizabeth Taylor and then to Egypt under Cleopatra's reign.
Louise Lambert is the time-traveling tween who is making a couple of tough adjustments with her father, an attorney being out of work, and her best friend who has recently discovered a boy named Kip, who seems to be drifting from their friendship. She's a bit lacking in self- confidence but nevertheless has attracted the attention of two boys in her class. But Louise is not quite ready to take the plunge into being boy crazy...she would rather take the plunge back in time by visiting the traveling trunk sale and putting on a dress with a history.
My favorite part of book three were the interesting tidbits it introduces from Cleopatra's time. The library of papyrus in Alexandria, the black wigs and shaved heads, the poisonous asp used by Cleopatra in later life, and her intellect and ability to speak nine languages. I had no idea Cleopatra was in fact Greek, or that she married her ten year old brother Ptolemy! The snippets of google info. the author injects near the end of the book after Louise returns to her time add even more to the historical value and I wish there were more. This book had SO much to offer but I found myself wanting richer conversation, more about Elizabeth Taylor and just what us up with Stella nd Pierre. They are introduced again in book three and then completely disappear until the very ending pages. This is literally a fast whirlwind of a book, easy to read and get through in one sitting. In a way it's refreshing and light,--but man, there is so much that I want to know that just didn't get answered. I wanted to get to know the side characters, her best friend, her mom, the cute skater boy, and Peter. It felt like there just wasn't any more development on that end.
I do like that Louise is maturing and changing after each adventure. In this step back she learns that it's not okay to steal and there are often dire consequences. She also gains confidence and learns to defend herself against fashion Bully Billy. You go girl!
The illustrations are missing fro the Netgalley version which I was sad about-- they are my favorite piece of the series. You need to see the art to appreciate the stories! Can't wait to see each book in print form.
Do I recommend this series? Yes! They are a great introduction both fashion design and history. But book three felt too rushed and had a few content issues that I don't remember in the previous installments.

Another fun travel
By Brittany Moore
Louise is once again super excited about the upcoming vintage sale even if the rest of her life isn't going so great. Her best friend has a boyfriend now and isn't spending as much time with her. Louise also still isn't loud and proud about her love of vintage and gets picked on at school a bit for her attire. She has stumbled upon some interesting information about her mother though that makes her suspect that there's more to her time-traveling than her mother lets on about. She's very excited to see where she'll end up this time, and she sees just the dress to take her there.
THERE WERE NO ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE E-GALLEY!!! That was very disappointing, but luckily the book is out now, so I can go buy a copy and look at the gorgeous color illustrations.
I was a bit disappointed when Louise first arrived at her location, because I was expecting full-on Egypt times and was met instead with Hollywood. Not that old Hollywood isn't fabulous in its own way, but EGYPT! So I was quite relieved to see that everything was not how it appeared to be, yet again. This was a really great addition to Louise's time-traveling. I also am really enjoying watching her current day relationships expand. There should be lots of fun to come with the next books in this series.
This is seriously a perfect gift for a teen/tween who's a bit quirky. I think Louise is a realistic character that girls who are starting to shape their personalities can really relate too. Louise is a fun character and her adventures make me jealous of her vintage clothing sales. The illustrations alone make this book a must read, so make sure you check these out soon.
First Line:
"'Louise, what are you doing awake at this hour?'"
Favorite Line:
"She opened the creaky old trunk, tossed her secret stash of Barbie and Ken dolls onto the hardwood floor, and pulled out the poodle necklace."
