Evelyn Waugh was one of literature's great curmudgeons and a scathingly funny satirist. Scoop is a comedy of England's newspaper business of the 1930s and the story of William Boot, a innocent hick from the country who writes careful essays about the habits of the badger. Through a series of accidents and mistaken identity, Boot is hired as a war correspondent for a Fleet Street newspaper. The uncomprehending Boot is sent to the fictional African country of Ishmaelia to cover an expected revolution. Although he has no idea what he is doing and he can't understand the incomprehensible telegrams from his London editors, Boot eventually gets the big story.

About the Author
Evelyn Waugh was born in Hampstead in 1903 and educated at Hertford College, Oxford. In 1928 he published his first novel, Decline and Fall, which was soon followed by Vile Bodies, Black Mischief (1932), A Handful of Dust (1934) and Scoop (1938). During these years he also travelled extensively and converted to Catholicism. In 1939 Waugh was commissioned in the Royal Marines and later transferred to the Royal Horse Guards, experiences which informed his Sword of Honour trilogy (1952-61). His most famous novel, Brideshead Revisited (1945), was written while on leave from the army. Waugh died in 1966.

Fall from Grace

His humour is is an inverse reflection of his real closed mind mentality. It's funny, but dripping with excess bile. I really enjoyed reading Waugh as an adolescent and obviously his baleful societal characterisations must have gone over my head at the time and I just found them as humorous as my other favorite writer of the time P.G. Wodehouse. Waugh's early short stories now make far more depressing reading. Wodehouse continues to pass the funny bone test irrespective of time. Waugh remains a great weaver of words but I cant help thinking he's never met a cat he wouldn't cheerfully kick in the stomach without a second thought, if it dared come near him.

Half Scoop at best

Having just read Waugh's "Sword Of Honour" and being familiar with his novelistic satire in "The Loved One," I expected more from Waugh than I got from "Scoop." Was he at fault, or me? It's clear he was writing a lark here, something dashed off between more substantial works. Maybe I shouldn't have expected more. But given his abiding interest in politics, travel, and social mores, I thought "Scoop" a desultory endeavor from someone who could have delivered much more.

His analysis of the newspaper trade is seen as pungent and jabbing by some, but it comes off as forced and fantastical. Was there ever a newspaper that sent off reporters with unlimited expense accounts, allowing them to buy hollowed out sticks and collapsible canoes on a lark? Rewrite desks transform barely-coherent telegrams from lazy, drunken scribes into five-column front page articles, while editors gleefully tear apart their front pages at the 11th and one-half hour to accommodate dispatches from their reporters the darkest corners of the Third World. Yes, barroom journalism is still practiced occasionally by the likes of Jayson Blair, but if life was ever really this good in the Fourth Estate, there wouldn't be so many ulcers in newsrooms. Even in the 1930s, reporters worked harder than this, and Waugh knew it. The shame is the real work of journalists can be made every bit as silly and tawdry within the realm of true parody, but Waugh opted to pretend they only could be bothered to leave their hotel rooms to yell at their servants that the ice on their head compresses needed refreshing.

Waugh can write, he crafts amazing sentences, and he is capable of developing some probing lines of analysis around his myriad of characters. The middle part of this book is pretty good, not great but energetic, but it takes 100 pages to get there, and 50 more pages of denouement after its over to find out how everyone turned out. The lead character, the rustic rube William Boot, is no different upon leaving the strange country of Ishmaelia than before arriving, except for being taken for a bit of a ride by a shadowy German woman in one of several subplots that taper off into nothingness before the 321 pages run out. Boot seems a tribute to the complacency of the landed class, and like Waugh's ethnic epithets at the natives and others sprinkled liberally in the book, this leaves an unnecessarily sour taste. Waugh had a narrow perspective at times, but as a writer was usually more reflective, and less reflexive, than this.

Even the main business of the novel, Boot's big story that gives the book its name, is handled perfunctorily. It's neither great comedy or very dramatic. From what I gathered, the revolution was snuffed out in less than half a page when some angry Swede bulled through a porch of pinko grandees. Please tell me if I missed something here, but I don't think so.

"News is what a chap who doesn't care much about anything wants to read," Boot is told by a companion, Corker, who makes a brief turn in the narrative before melting away like so many others in this maddeningly inconsistent book. It's a funny line, but it doesn't hold up to any deeper analysis. Nor, sorry to say, does "Scoop."

I read and studied this very readable book back in the late 1970's. Once again I am rereading it now in 2011.
The authors present the subject of electronics and op amps as if they are actually sitting beside you and
explaining the subject in a very understandable form. I very much appreciate the good humor they have injected along
the way. They encourage the reader to immediately start building practical op amp circuits and try them out. Thirty
five years ago I was able to apply this knowledge in building instrumentation amplifiers to air monitoring equipment where
we had no other alternative. This is a great book and I recommend it to anyone who is getting into electronics through work
or hobby.

If you are daunted by Horowitz and Hill's Art of Electronics, the traditional electronics "bible", try this book. It should never have gone out of print, and I wish Hoenig would release it on the web. Easy on the math, a tutorial not a reference, it should be a hacker must-read.

One small lack: no mention of current loops and other methods of transmitting signals over relatively long wires (feet or meters rather than inches.) To make up for it, there's a little section on RF signaling.

If you just need to measure something, but don't want the engineering degree spoken of in the title, this is the book to get.

Every young engineer should read this book

Way back in 1994 I discovered this book while browsing in my university's library. It changed my life and was the reason I got into electronics in a big way. Recently I was helping a student with an electronic project and bought this copy for her, hoping to give her the same experience I had had. Still a great book after all these years. So positive, so encouraging, so humble and helpful. The authors really want the student to have a great time, get things working, and go from strength to strength.

Hilarious and made of awesome

The Homeroom Diaries is a hilarious story told in the form of a teens diary, complete with tons of awesome illustrations. It is hard for me to decide which I enjoyed more- the story through Margaret, or "Cuckoo" as she has everyone call her, entries or her pictures to go along with the entries. It was a close call, both were equally awesome and both totally hilarious. The Homeroom Diaries is told from Cuckoo's point of view, but because it is her diaries it is told in a kind of easily accessible stream of consciousness. I loved every page of this book, even the sad ones.

Cuckoo does not have it easy. She has had more than her fair share of crappy things happen to her, but still through it all she is holding it together remarkably. I know the counselors at her school don't think so, but I do. I admired the heck out of her. And I loved seeing her with her friends.

The illustrations added a fantastic level of humor to the story. I lost count of how many times I flat out laughed out loud while reading Homeroom Diaries. And these were not dainty little giggles or chuckles, they were full out laughs, where I had to re-read paragraphs just so I could laugh again.

Homeroom Diaries is not just funny pictures though, there is a kick ass story in there too.Cuckoo and her friends are trying to implement this "project happiness" idea of theirs throughout the story, and you get a behind the scenes look at their everyday life. And trust me, tons goes on with them. I loved getting to know each of her friends, and I especially loved the alternate endings that she made for them. Cuckoo hates endings, and she is constantly writing alternate endings for books and movies and people. I hope that means there is another book coming out, because I am not ready to say goodbye to Cuckoo and her BFFs!

Homeroom Diaries- Read it before you get detention!!

Reading "Homeroom Diaries" is like a breath of fresh air. While the concept of a book being written in diary form is quite popular, James Patterson ups the ante by creating a relatable character that you truly care about. Everyone has gone to school with someone like Cuckoo Clarke, but now you get to be inside her head as she gets the chance to "start over." The voice of Cuckoo sucks you in on page one and keeps you turning the page until the end.

Homeroom Diaries was such a delightful read! I was surprised by how dark the subject matter got, but it's done with humor and understanding. And the illustrations are great! Maggie, aka Cuckoo, was just released from a 10-day stay at the mental hospital. She had an emotional breakdown after her mother took off and never returned. Now, she's living with a neighbor and is determined (along with her rag-tag group of friends) to do something to make the world, or at least their school, a happier place. All the while, keeping a diary and keeping said diary away from the school counselor who thinks every emotional response is cause for concern.

I really enjoyed Homeroom Diaries. I had never read a graphic novel before, so this was really something different for me. It's not wholly a graphic novel, probably a bit less than half, but it still took some getting use to. I was distracted by the graphics in the beginning. My eyes kept darting back to them while I was reading the text, but after a few chapters I fell into a rhythm. It all kind of reminded me of Lizzie McGuire, with little cartoon Maggie's acting out the story, or depicting some funny extra from her mind.

As for the plot, Homeroom Diaries is, like I said earlier, dark but funny. Maggie is accepting of the fact that she was institutionalized, and is annoyed that now every time she's sad, her counselor wants to send her back. She is allowed to be sad! Especially since someone close to her dies and another someone attempts suicide! See, really dark. Oh, and a boy assaults her. She's not crazy! She's having appropriate emotional responses! But she doesn't let that get her down. Maggie and her friends are super determined to pull something together to join the cliques and make people happier. It does get a bit cheesy toward the end, but I liked it. A lot.

Homeroom Diaries was really good. The format was a bit hard for me to get into at first, but I ended up loving it. The comic bits add so much to the overall story! Although I have to say my favorite page was the faces of Johnny Depp. So random!

useful! no pretense, great photos!

I haven't gotten past the midway point in this book, that's how rich and useful the first half is. When it comes to decor books, I tend to look at all the pictures first, then backtrack to read ... That approach works well with this book too and I suggest you try it too. Boy, the photo captions reveal MUCH more than meets the eye! Bigtime!!! What I saw the first go-round was tons of exquisite color photos of living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, entryways, the works... On the second go-round, the rooms' beauty secrets were revealed in the tell-all photo captions.
Great no-pretense book that will captivate some readers. The rooms are lovely and splendid yet down to Earth. Minor note: It's written in British English ...British slang has been absent so far (thank heavens) ... It was probably edited out (double thank heavens) ... The cover image is blah but the rest of the book is dynamite.

I WAS JUST GOING TO LIST THIS BOOK

I opened the book up and exclaimed outloud!!!

It has the most unique ideas I have ever seen. There is no way I am letting go of this prize!

It seems to have the most unique ideas for little corners, small spaces and easy unusual touches I can do without using a hammer!

The ideas are pretty, easy and functional!!

beautiful inspiration for rustic/country spaces

After leaving NYC about four years ago, while making my way to my current home in the high desert plains there were a few places I called home for a short while. Each had its unique use of space and it was interesting to use old and new pieces to make each space my own. This book was a great resource to me to figure out ways of arranging, re-purposing, and making smart use of small spaces.

The book is mostly geared to rustic and country style looks and to me, has a decidedly British feel to it. The things she uses to decorate with are straight out of Grandma's attic for the most part with some modern touches thrown in for balanced living and an eclectic look. Yard sales and junque shops have turned up many items inspired by the photos in this book and for *very* little cost.

I appreciated the effort to tell this story, but ...

I appreciated the effort to tell this story, but found the characters unbelievable, the timeline discordant, and the ending contrived. It is a book that I would give a three rating for adult readers (the thought process of an adult is very apparent) and a one rating for the target audience. That should be a two rating, but kiddos rule. Sorry.

A Good Read

I purchased this for my 9-year-old daughter (who reads on a middle school level), and wound up reading it myself first. The author does a great job handling the subject, and I loved the varied backgrounds of the central characters. My daughter said the main character wasn't her favorite, and yet this is still one of the books she has re-read numerous times, so she clearly enjoyed the story in it. I'd definitely recommend this book to others.

Tedious to read.

I, too, appreciated the effort to tell this story. But the characters were not believable, foolish even. My son kept saying to me, "There is no way a kid would talk like that." Maybe this book should have been about kindergartners or first graders, but there is no way children in fifth grade living in New York would not have heard about this event. Tedious to read.

On the fateful night of the sinking, Polar and the Speddens are lucky enough to be lowered down the side of the luxury liner in a lifeboat, but when the family boards the rescue ship, Polar finds himself left behind! How will Polar make it back to his best friend?

In a curious but successful hybrid of fact and fiction, an affable stuffed polar bear is the narrator of this true tale written in 1913 by Spedden, an American heiress who traveled extensively with her husband and their son, Douglas. Polar, a character modeled on an actual toy that Douglas received as a Christmas gift, offers a chatty travelogue of the Speddens' visits to such locales as Madeira, Algiers and Paris. The bear's detailed account may prove tedious to the target audience-until midway through the book, when the Speddens and Polar board a new luxury liner called the Titanic. The family survives the disastrous collision with the iceberg (however, according to an epilogue by Leighton H. Coleman III, a descendant of the author, Douglas died in a car accident three years later). Snapshots from the Speddens' photo album and other memorabilia (e.g., a 1910 postcard of the F.A.O. Schwartz toy store, where Polar is purchased; a ticket entitling the bearer to use of the Turkish baths aboard the Titanic) provide intriguing glimpses of a long-gone lifestyle. Also evoking the Edwardian era are McGaw's romantic paintings, equally effective in their portrayal of the drama at sea and the love between a boy and his bear. Ages 8-12.

The inclusion of realia?postcards from Europe and tickets from the Titanic?adds color and authenticity to the photos. Great book for our Titanic study

This book was a wonderful addition to our Titanic study. My kids loved learning about the boy in the book. I liked that the book gave an account of those who had traveled on the boat. It was interesting learning about the boy and his illness and his journey on Titanic.

The paperback book was bound together well. The pages were easy to turn and still stay in good shape.
