Lesbian adoptive parents, a gay Presbyterian minister, a lesbian police officer, a drag queen and a gay man with AIDS are among the 15 individuals who speak here, in first-person narratives adapted by Sutton from interviews. Their stories touch on homophobia, coming out, creating community, self-acceptance and spirituality; generally positive, they show the progress made by the gay and lesbian community over the years. Others, like that of an Irishman who fears losing his green card if his sexuality is revealed and that of an AIDS educator working with young people, point out struggles yet to be overcome. In his introduction, Sutton explains that he focused primarily on adults (only three interviewees are of high-school age) to show lesbian and gay teens "that life goes on past junior-high humiliation and high-school ostracism," but the profiles likely to interest the target audience most will probably be those about their peers. And while he states that "my community is bigger than where I live," Sutton does not venture beyond his own base in Chicago, somewhat limiting the scope of his otherwise effective book. Ages 12-up.

Grade 8 Up-An eloquent foreword by M.E. Kerr sets the tone for 15 short interviews in which gays, lesbians, and their advocates speak about the perils and joys of being sexually different from mainstream culture-how they approach straight society and how it reacts to them. The book documents a wide range of experiences, including a young man who was hounded out of high school; lesbian partners who adopted Peruvian children; a minister; a drag queen who attended the 1984 Democratic convention as a presidential candidate; and a police officer who wants her lover to be treated with care and respect in the event she is injured or killed in the line of duty. This lively title both demystifies a minority group demonized by much of the media and shows teens that there is "something to look forward to" in spite of the discrimination and loneliness they feel. It succeeds largely because the narrators' words bespeak qualities such as humor, honesty, generosity, and commitment despite, as Kerr says, "the prejudice or rigidity of others." Clear black-and-white photographs illustrate each interview. This book shows a wider range of experience than Ann Heron's Two Teenagers in Twenty (Alyson, 1994). Eric Marcus's Is It a Choice? (HarperCollins, 1993) is comparable in scope, but provides information in a question-and-answer format.

Gr 5-8-The "Big Dig" is the largest and most complex (and some might add, disruptive) U.S. transportation reconstruction project to date. Officially known as the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, the "dig" began in 1991, with an estimated 14 billion dollar price tag and a 20-year time frame, as an effort to solve Boston's massive traffic problems. Separate chapters are devoted to the four major elements of the project: the staged construction of tunnels, bridges and viaducts, aboveground highways, and surface roads and rights-of-way. These nuts-and-bolts descriptions are framed by an informative introduction with pertinent Boston history and a Central Artery timeline and a concluding essay on the relationship between urban infrastructure and quality of life. Vibrant, full-color photographs appear throughout and numerous maps and diagrams are carefully deployed to further enhance understanding of the text. A glossary of 15 construction terms highlighted in the text is somewhat superfluous. Vanderwarker succeeds in reducing a highly complex endeavor to comprehensible parts in a straightforward, lucid narrative. An impressive true-life tale of American ingenuity.

In its zeal to solve one urban crisis, however, it created another by fracturing the neighborhoods. The three-part project will replace the existing highway with a larger underground one, a third tunnel beneath Boston Harbor, and the world's widest cable-stayed bridge. Vandewarker takes readers from funding to planning to construction, including thorough descriptions of building techniques, as well as colorful photos, diagrams, and maps. Bought it for a kid; kept it for myself

Living in Boston, you are constantly affected by Big Dig-related twists, turns, and upsets. One day the one-way street heads east; the next it has been re-routed west. Few of us venture into the heart of this truly amazing engineering feat, but this book shows us why we should pay more attention. Vanderwarker's spectacular photographs are thrilling to see and they give a glimpse of just why so much money has been poured into this project. We get to see things only the workers would normally see. But perhaps best of all is the glimpse it gives of cutting-edge engineering and technology. Seldom have I seen so clearly how yesterday's sci-fi has become today's "sci" and tomorrow's business as usual.

The muted colors of Ingpen's subtle paintings illuminate the prose and give the subject the dignity it deserves. Ages 6-10.

Grade 2-4-- Scholes defines peace as having the things one needs--food, shelter, clothing--and at least being able to hope for some of the things one wants--friends, family, and love. Building on this definition, she briefly discusses conflicts that destroy peace, ways to regain it, and being a peacemaker. This is a momentous undertaking for a picture book; an inherent difficulty is trying to explain peace. Nevertheless, the text does a credible, if not entirely satisfying job and could open way to further discussion and exploration of the concept. The format presents additional problems. The jacket and opening picture, coupled with the simple text, seem to indicate that this book is suitable for preschoolers--but it is not. The narration quickly becomes too theoretical, and parts of it are obviously directed toward older children. Despite some startling and moving images, Ingpen's pictures often seem to go off on tangents, e.g., when the text mentions peace as the chance to be free from fear, to have the chance to study, and to find love, the illustration shows children involved in tug of war. Katherine Scholes was born in Tanzania, East Africa, the daughter of a missionary doctor and an artist. She has since lives in England, Melbourne, and Tasmania, and is the author the international bestsellers The Rain Queen, Make Me an Idol, The Stone Angel, and The Hunter's Wife. She has sold over two million books in Germany and France.
Robert Ingpen has written and/or illustrated over 100 published books including picture books, fictional works for all ages, and nonfiction. He has designed postage stamps, murals, and tapestries, and has hosted exhibitions around the world. In 2002, his work was featured in the inaugural exhibition at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Massachusetts.

Wonderful book on Peace!

I used this book to tie up the values and ideas that Martin Luther King Jr. represented. The students then painted pictures of peaceful situations. This led to a discussion about peace. A boy from Eritrea said that Ethiopians were bad and didn't want to be peaceful. He was shocked when he learned that one of his best friends in the class was Ethiopian. He learned that some Ethiopians are good and peaceful. I as an American, apologized to a Vietnamese student and pledged peace as he swore to be peaceful also. Other students were surprized that the US and Vietnam had fought. We learned a lot about peace from this book.

What a smart way to explain Peace!

Yes, this book is for both children and grown-ups who are interested in the subject of Peace. The book is to the point and precise in explaining how conflict comes about and how it is possible to resolve it and bring about peace. It is a very simple and still really profound book. If you are using it for very young children, you will have to further illustrate the points that are made by the author but this book is excellent in explaining in detail how conflict happens and teaching exactly what needs to be done to achieve peace. It teaches children (and adults) to take responsibility for oneself, for others and for peace in our world. It also addresses children maturely as it explains real situations when peace is impossible to be achieved without everyone's cooperation. An excellent book for those who are truly seeking to understand and teach peace!

If Only Bush would read this book....both dad and son

For a book written in 1989...pre Bush Terror...[both Father and Son]....I sure wish their Grandfather would of read them this book!
But, alas, he did not....and look what a mess we are in.
This book is perfect for a Read-Aloud for kids and adults...
The illustrations are so soft and real and artistic....
The wording is so crafted....and calm.
A true Treasure indeed....
but since there is limited financial profit in Peace....it will be relegated to just a cutsy book for kids....which it is not!
This book is a book of substance....Diamonds are small and pure and so is this book.

"Saved" is a helluva good read and a moving story!

I enjoyed this book immensely. It started out as a decent read, but the further I got into it, the more interesting and compelling it became. Then about midway through the book I had a hard time putting it down. I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next, but I also knew I was going to hate to finish it too quickly! I bought it for bedtime reading, but during the last half of the book it ended up keeping me awake and cutting into my sleep for a few nights as I had such a hard time putting it down! The story itself is astounding and very well told. Mr. Bullimore suffered unbelievable misfortune when the keel snapped off of his racing yacht in a violent Antarctic storm. His description of it leaves the reader ever so grateful that they would never have to endure something similar. (I hate to be cold so I would have just given up and tried to die quickly just to get it over with!) The story is told through a series of rotations through three different viewpoints: Mr. Bullimore's, his wife and friends back home, and the participants involved in his rescue. I think that this method worked well because it adds a lot of suspense to the story. The reader could see what was happening with the rescue effort in detail, but know that at the same time Mr. Bullimore had no idea that anyone was coming to save him and all! In the final hours, it is incredible to me that he maintained the will to live. The rescue effort itself was so massive that it chokes you up to know what great people the Australians are. At the point of the actual rescue I cried for three solid pages! It was incredibly moving. I would also like to add that I've read otherwise good stories that were made somewhat boring by lack of writing skill. Mr. Bullimore's skills at writing are quite good. never once did, I think he needed improvement in that department. What's more, I found him to be a very likable regular guy. I found myself wanting to know more about him and being interested in his life. Most excellent work, Tony! I hope you're alive and well....and still writing!
