Girls...interrupted

Recorded history is replete with stories of those who tortured other living creatures in the name of medical and scientific research, but few match the horrors of Josef Mengele, the Auschwitz Angel of Death. Among his most famous experiments were those conducted on thousands of twins, few of whom survived the war. Affinity Komar's fictionalized version follows identical preteens Pearl and Stasha during their months at Auschwitz and shortly thereafter.
Books about this place and time can be tough to digest, and even the thickest skinned among us may have a tough time with Primo Levi. Komar eases readers into her story with deft language bordering on poetry and her focus on the twin relationship. The zoo, as the twins and other test subjects refer to their quarters, is a relatively benign place amidst the mass murders occurring elsewhere in the camp. Mengele takes care of his twins, we are reminded many times, and they are provided with adequate food and shelter, their lives scented by the omnipresent smoke from the cremo. Occasionally, twins are summoned to the lab, needles are injected, extractions performed, but since we are seeing the world through young eyes, we're never clear about the purpose, and it becomes increasingly apparent that there may be no purpose beyond the gratification of one particularly creative torturer.
Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviets, soldiers who were somewhat less than compassionate in this telling, months before the end of the war in Europe. The most interesting part of the book for me was the description of the challenges faced by former prisoners during that period. Although they had escaped the camp, their lives were still in peril; they were often cold and hungry and mostly dependent on the kindness of strangers.
The story concludes in 1945, with a few scenes set in the future to remind us that freedom alone does not confer happy endings. Although many camp survivors were able to live relatively normal lives, those who had been subjected to the experimentation of Uncle Doctor suffered physical abuse that often could not be repaired. Whether you've read dozens of books about this era or none, whether you're a twin or not, Mischling tells a story that will haunt you with its brilliant juxtaposition of horror and lyricism.

Just...WOW

I've read hundreds of books but this is the first review of a book I have ever written. History has always captivated me but for whatever reason, without any thought, I look back and realize that I have chosen dozens of books related at least in some way, to the Holocaust. Although most are written and deemed as fiction, I have read plenty of non-fiction titles as well and know that these fictional books very nearly can be true.
The two main voices, twins, Pearl and Stasha are identical twins who were captured during the war and taken to the camp known as the Auschwitz Zoo in Poland. Because of their uniqueness of being twins, they were held in a "special" area if the camp where they were treated somewhat different but suffered just as great as any other. The author gives each sister their own voices and each sister brings a different, but strikingly similar account of their experiences. The horrors they live with will bring you to tears as will the relationships they develop and their abilities to dream beyond the camp will captivate you and pull you in wanting to know more yet you'll want to hide your eyes from the horrors that are certain to come.
The book was very difficult at times to read because of the perversion of that time of war and imminent death but because of the hope these two sisters and those who become their family seem to only loose touch if late into the story, you can't help but to read every word as quickly as possible.
This is a great read. Captivating to its core. Heartbreaking but inspiring.

Mischling

Mischling is a term that was used by the Third Reich to describe people who had Aryan and Jewish blood. The novel begins when 12 year old twins Pearl and Stasha are in a cattle car bound for Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944 along with their mother and grandfather. When they arrive, the twins are sent to 'the Zoo' by Dr Mengle. The Zoo is where he kept twins, triplets and other children that he thought were interesting so that he could perform physical and mental experiments on them. In this area, they had a little more freedom but the things that were done to them were unimaginable. This story is told through the eyes of Pearl and Stasha in alternating chapters.
Pearl and Stasha are definitely two halves of the whole. Pearl remembers the past and the sad while Stasha is assigned to remember the funny and the future. They are so connected that they know what each other is thinking and feeling until they start trying to block the pain that Dr Mengle is inflicting on them to keep the other from feeling their pain. They make friends and learn to live in their new environment because they are told that their cooperation will help their mother and grandfather. Their story is heartbreaking but there is also hope for the future sprinkled through their stories.
I am not going to tell you that this is an easy book to read. I had to put it down more than once because I just couldn't imagine what was being done to these children in the name of medicine. One good thing is that the author doesn't go into great detail about the experimentation but if you are at all familiar with this time period, you know what's happening. I am definitely glad that I read this book and I know that the characters of Pearl and Stasha are going to stay in my mind. Will you cry while you read it -- ABSOLUTELY -- but you will also see those small opportunities for hope in the future.
