Rush draws on principles and practices from yoga, massage, the Japanese martial art aikido and other traditions for her comprehensive program to create and sustain health through a balanced system of "safe stretching." According to the author, who has written many books on massage and yoga, the easiest low-impact movements offer the greatest benefits (in terms of longevity). Key to Rush's system is what she calls the Rush Reverse, an approach to exercise that trains the body to stretch "by relaxing rather than by straining." Readers who have been practicing yoga will probably be familiar with the chakra system (which focuses on centers of physical, emotional and spiritual energy), around which Rush structures her program. While the book's b&w line drawings are somewhat rudimentary, Rush's instructions and explanations are clear and thorough. Breathing practices, relaxation techniques and a focus on finding pleasure in movement are central to Rush's program, and her holistic approach incorporates a wide variety of ways for readers who can't engage in more strenuous physical activity to become fit. This work offers a wealth of solid information.

Potentially Harmeful?

I was not pleased with this book.
For one thing, all the "stretches" shown are basic yoga postures like cobra, cat's breath and downward dog.
Yet I would have given it 2-3 stars for the exercises, if it wasn't for
the introduction and one specific exercise.
So, we learn that "less is more" and that "each stretch works best if done briefly, literally for 2 seconds" and that "overextension actually shortens the muscle"...
I'm all for someone writing out of personal experience, but the author might have checked clinical resources before stating her opinion as fact.
But what REALLY got me thinking was an exercise (not yoga) she calls "cracking your back" in which she encourages people to "crack" their spine by twisting it left to right in order to release tension(?!).
Cracking your spine (or knuckles or ANY body part for that matter) wears away the joint's cartilage and is VERY bad for you.
I am amazed that a person who "has been practicing and writing about bodywork for more than 30 years..." is unaware of that.

Brilliant technique

Though I have studied Kriya and Hatha yoga with some benefit, I've found that stretching can cause injury when done improperly and most seem to stretch improperly.
Anne Kent Rush introduces in this book a simple but powerful technique (which she calls the "Rush Reverse") to help one find more flexibility in a safer more comfortable way.
The technique can be applied to almost any movement. It deserves study and consideration by anyone serious about keeping the body flexible and healthy.
You'll also find simple but powerful ideas and exercises concerning meditation and mind-body connection.
Ms Rush's experience with over 30 years of writing about health comes through in this book which presents powerful techniques in a simple-to-understand format.

Unique, gentle approach to flexibility

Anyone who is looking for a 'Complete Dummies' Book' for integrating mind-body-spirit in one simple exercise approach will find it here. Clear, easy to follow, and gently written, this is a lovely book. The heart of the matter, however, lies in the innovative "Rush Reverse." I have been practicing stretching/yoga/qigong for a number of years and this technique is one I am incorporating into my daily routines from now on. Immediately and dramatically effective, not only for increasing flexibility but also for relieving pain-causing tension, the 'RR' belongs in everyone's stretching toolbox, and will work with virtually any stretch/yoga pose. The breathing and meditation exercises will invoke a calm and healing mental/emotional state for many people, but even if they are not your cup of tea, I believe you will find her approach very helpful for relieving physical tension and discomfort. Highly recommended.
