Overwatch, by Marc Guggenheim

A young CIA lawyer uncovers a dangerous worldwide conspiracy, masterminded by forces within the US intelligence community.

Alex Garnett has spent his life in the shadow of his father, a former Chief of Staff and Solicitor General to two presidents who's been responsible for getting Alex every job he ever had, including his latest: attorney for the CIA. However, a seemingly routine litigation leads to a series of unexpected events, including poison, kidnapping, torture and murder. As casualties pile up, it becomes clear Alex is the final target in someone's blood-soaked attempts to cover their tracks.

With the help of a neurotic hacker, Alex unravels a conspiracy older than the CIA itself. The trail of clues reveals the presence of unseen forces that are bringing this nation to the brink of war--and Alex's life is only one of many in danger.

From Booklist
Guggenheim has taken familiar elements from the spy-thriller genre, stirred them together at fairly high heat, and cooked up an entertaining diversion. We have the everyday bloke pulled into something bewildering and scary; the wet-work, black-ops government bureau so secret even the president doesn’t know about it; the hard-eyed loony—a highly placed government official—who runs the clandestine organization between sips of Macallan; and the round-shouldered computer whiz who burrows into government sites to wise up the hero. And a plot motor pulled from the headlines, in this case an attempt to bait two Middle East countries into nuclear war. Alex Garnett didn’t get hired as a CIA lawyer on merit. His well-connected but distant father pulled strings. Dad’s ghostly presence looms over the well-done set pieces: murders, explosions, fights, and chases. That’s likely why one standard ingredient is missing here: the gorgeous female operative of ambiguous loyalties. Alex has a lover, but she dumps him when things get dangerous, thus making possible the emotional finale. The comfort of familiar genre conventions, nicely executed, with the frisson of some stealthy improvisation. --Don Crinklaw

Review
"Politically savvy . . . This is a spy thriller for people who don't ordinarily like spy thrillers. . . . The book is a paranoid's delight."―Mystery Scene

"Overwatch doesn't just bring together the legal and espionage genres. It merges family problems with professional ones, swirls in a major helping of murder and mayhem, and with a deft touch, reminds us why politics is--always--personal."―Brad Meltzer, author of The Fifth Assassin

"The best thriller writers are always storytellers first and Guggenheim is, quite simply, a terrific storyteller. Part legal thriller, part espionage page-turner... If you ever wanted to know what the marriage of Clancy and Grisham would look like, devour Overwatch."―Derek Haas, author of The Right Hand

"Over the years I've used many hyphenated adjectives to describe lawyers (i.e., "soul-sucking," "bottom-feeding"). Now, thanks to Marc Guggenheim's debut novel, I can add a new one to the list: "bad-ass." Overwatch is a brilliantly-paced novel with the brains of a legal thriller, the testosterone of an action movie, and white-hot paranoia of a 70s conspiracy flick. Not only is Alex Garnett one of my favorite new heroes, but Guggenheim has also created a seriously warped villain - frightening not only because of what he does, but because you get the sinking feeling he might be alive and working in D.C. right now."―Duane Swierczynski, author of Point & Shoot

"Alex Garnett is the perfect contemporary 'stranger in a stranger land'--a good man trying to maintain a dignified perspective within the moralistic marshes of Washington DC. And now he's also stumbled upon what he believes to be a substrata of lawlessness that makes the Old West look like an afternoon tea party. With a magnificent interweaving of law, history, and good ol' knife's-edge suspense, Guggenheim spins out a gem with Overwatch." ―Wil Mara, author of Frame 232 and The Gemini Virus

"It's spy-vs.-lawyer in the tightly drawn thriller Overwatch. Marc Guggenheim knows exactly which laws are broken by the nation's most secretive agencies: all of them. Insider detail, accelerating tension and the highest stakes possible make this novel impossible to put down."―Mike Cooper, author of Full Ratchet and Clawback

"Marc Guggenheim is a monster talent, able to go from TV to film to novels with an ease I envy, and the skill of a master storyteller."―Ed Brubaker, author of Fatale, Criminal, Captain America, and Sleeper

Fun read
By Alysia Kozbial
I don't normally review books, but I just finished a good book, so here we go.
I usually read YA or scifi/fantasy, so Overwatch was a really different read for me. But I really enjoyed it! I'm not going to give a synopsis - scroll up for that - but our hero Alex Garrnett gets hired into the CIA's legal department and one case knocks down a dominoes-like chain of event and instead of running, Alex digs deeper and s*** hits the fan. Most of the story is told from his point of view, but it also switches onto the POVs of Iran's ayatollah and the head of the Overwatch. For the readers like me who don't know a lot about legal and political terms, there's plenty of explanation that doesn't get in the way of the story. And there's several moments when I just thought all was lost for Alex, like there is no way out for him, so it's definitely a book you can't put down. Also Alex also has a funny young computer hacker genius friend in the CIA, which generally the computer nerds are my type of people and Gerald does not disappoint.

There is one point of view that showed up halfway through the story about a female undercover spy and I'm not sure what the point of that was. I kept expecting her to show up again and she never did. She seemed awesome, so it was on my mind as I read the rest of the book. It's harsh, but I'm knocking a point off for that. (And maybe a few other spoilery things, but it was distracting me.) Otherwise it was genuinely a fun read!

Heir to Clancy and Jack Ryan!
By A. Bradley
I picked up OVERWATCH by Marc Guggenheim on the recommendation of a good friend. I love old school Tom Clancy thrillers, but find the modern day Baldacci-style plots too far-fetched. My friend was right though! I loved OVERWATCH. The hero, Alex Garnett, signed up to the CIA's lawyer, not an operative -- already an intriguing change of pace. Garnett gets quickly entangled in a global conspiracy. With the body count rising and more than Garnett's career at stake, Garnett must unravel the mystery before a war breaks out in the Middle East. Despite the escalating stakes, the story stays personal and true to Garnett's journey, especially his relationships with his father and fiancée.

Overall, a frolicking and excellent read for the summer. Looking forward to more from Guggenheim and Garnett.

PS -- and for once there is a "hacker"-esque character who talks and behaves likes a rational human being! yay!

Who is watching the watchers? We all know the CIA is tasked to watch over our country's enemies and to stop those enemies from harming out country. But who falls into the category of "enemy" and what steps and measures should we as a country allow to ferret out these enemies? Part of the job for Alex Garret is to establish legal limits to the actions that the CIA can take. Then, one day, he finds himself suddenly as one of those enemies that the CIA is tasked to protect the USA from. How did this happen? What is going on?
Fast moving thriller and a fun read.
