A great mind and a great book!

I found Katharine Scherman's "The Flowering of Ireland" for sale at our local library in the second hand shop. What a lucky find this was! Though the book has a dated feel (it was first published in 1981) and look about it (all the photos are black and white), as I began reading, I felt that I was encountering a mind and person who really understood and enjoyed the themes of the Celtic world.
Take for example Scherman's reason for writing this book. Why did the first Celtic monks leave the comforts of home? It was not for earthly treasure or colonizing new territories. Rather "they were looking for grace, which is a state of mind" (xiii).
And later there is this fascinating comment:
"Ireland's legion of holy men and women, the luminous quality of whose piety, learning and imagination inspirited the Western world for more than six hundred years, were most of them anonymous. Even many of the saints whose names still shine over the dimness of the centuries are probably composite personalities"(9).
That was an interesting comment, "composite personalities" which may in fact explain why so many of the figures were larger than life.
This is a wonderful book, written years before Celtomania hit the scene. In many ways a forerunner to Thomas Cahill's "How the Irish Saved Civilization" but in many respects a deeper study.

A history that should be loved and read especially by those who would understand the treasure of Irish spirituality...

This highly intelligent, scholarly and yet warm and very readable book traces the extraordinary artistic, scholarly and spiritual life of Ireland between the 5th and 12th centuries. One quarter of the book is dedicated to interesting exploration of the lives/myths/ influences of those saints who were so essential to the glorious flowering of Celtic Christian culture. Katharine Scherman takes delight in her subject, and her thoughtful, original mind, never dry or tedious, has created an enduring classic for the Celtophile.

It's my book, It's My Island!!! ;)

I love this book about the ancient Irish saints and scholars who saved Europe from the Dark Ages. I checked it out from my local public library many times over the years, but when I went back to reference it, they had taken it out of circulation and I was so sad that I ordered it from Amazon and waited anxiously for weeks for it to arrive. Now I get to keep it. ;)
